I'm with Pakled...I can sit for hours if undisturbed, but then I get paid :)

Even getting paid to sit in from of a computer, it is a good practice to get up every hour or so. This is good ergonomics and, even better, healthy. There are occassions when work is so intense that I'll forget to get up for a couple of hours, but this is rare. When in performing long unattended tasks (large downloads, big renders, etc.), I'll usually strap on the ol' geetar and practice while waiting.

Working from home and attempting to homeschool a kindergartener? 10 minutes, LOL. If I'm working on a project and am in the "zone"? Until I'm thirsty or my bladder explodes. Usually the only time I get to actually work on things is when my son is at his Nana's for the night, so smokes are allowed at the computer ;).

I tend to get up about once an hour, or at least I try, I have been known to sit here for 8hrs though.

Not too long ago, during a "marathon" animation session, I sat in front of the blasted puter screen for literally 11 hours straight, without getting up once, to meet a deadline. Since then, I learned about problems that can develop, such as blood clots in the legs, etc., and now make it a point to get up at least once an hour and walk around.

I make it a point to get up every few hours ... usually when poser/photoshop/bryce/windows has crashed 0.o when I'm on a roll I move so little that the motion sensitive lights in my old office would turn off ... annoying. Otherwise .. I'm good for 6-8 hours at a shot. usually the computer needs a break before I do. :)

I also get up at least every 30 minutes, it's important to do so especially for your eyes, to get them to focus on something farther away than a monitor. Back then I had made myself a sort of eye chart that I pinned on the far wall of my office I would force myself to stare at it once in a while just for that reason :-) I like to walk around the office, see what my sewing operators are doing and then put the ball and chain back on and sit back down at the puter.

Interesting... about 20 minutes. I push it to 30 minutes, but if I go beyond 40 minutes I will be here for quite some time. (Back Injury and I lose the ability to stand/straighten after a time.) In those cases where I have pushed it too far, I just spin the chair and layout on the ground next to it in my office until I can straighten out and stand (an hour or so if I do not land too hard!) The things we do in the name of art! lol! I love my laptop... just wish it could handle graphic programs!

Lately? A few hours. I have a broken foot and it's hard to get up and down and around my place...so I try to do a mass gathering of stuff and then park myself for the long haul, LOL

Hmm, don't know exactly but for a long time unless my bladder screams...lol. But I do try to get up after about 30 to 40 minutes if I remember. I get coffee or water and sometimes, tea. I kicked the smoking habit waaay back in 1986, so don't need a puff...yay! And I've never really had much of a sweet tooth for candy, but ice cream...yummy (although I don't get that much now).

You know what is right for you. I know what is right for me.
I try to make a short walk around after 30 minutes. It is also recreation for the eyes and you stay in contact with your colleagues. At home I am not entitled to smoke inside my house so I have to move into the garden to get fresh air an my ziggy

How about not sitting down in the first place? I did that for a while when working as an E/M designer. But I was younger then. I still do it once in a while, but as far as I can tell, standing is not very condusive to typing (straining the wrists and arching the back) unless you are fortunate enough, as you seem, to have a "desk" condusive to it! :) My problem is that my computer desk isn't just a 17" monitor and keyboard+mouse. It holds a 21" monitor (70 lbs), 19" monitor, scanner, keyboard, trackball, speakers, etc., and below, two full towers! None of those desks would suffice! ;) I'd have to raise the main monitor another 12", which is precarious for the weight. More than likely, the rearrangement to suit standing would require customization - and that is costly.

Depending on what I'm doing, I can sit for hours. But I usually do a lot of different things at the same time. Read a book, browse the 'net, look at forums, render a pic, eat my dinner. But it all takes place in front of my computer (ok depending on what the dinner IS) I've worn out 3 computer chairs since I discovered Poser LOL (and we're not talking cheap chairs either) And Diet Pepsi is an absolute MUST!

If I'm by myself, no kids to distract me or hubby whining about the length of time I sit at the computer, I can sit here for a couple of hours. Usually the only thing that will budge me is to go for a pee/let the dog out/separate fighting kids or hubby barking "gerrof the computer, you've been there all day, it's my turn" :-)
I'm on the bad section too, at work I sit in front of the box for about 7 hours, but try to break it up a little, with lunch and walkies breaks. Then I get home and is another 3-4 hours (sometimes 5-6) as you can see a very active lifestyle. I did see once a copy of Doom that was plugged in to an exercise bike, so you had to pedal to walk forward. If someone could find a way of accelerating render time using pedal power, I reckon most of us would be very fit by now.

I've moved the coffee machine, so I have to get up every 2 hours or so to get a fresh dose of cafeine....

Hours and hours, but then I have MS and sometimes sitting is all that I CAN do. If I have a good book or working my computer, the longest I have spent is about 54 hours working on a project. I just didn't realize how much time had gone by till I started to stand up..... The bad thing was that a few day later my harddrive died and I lost the project... Butch
At work, hours. But then I'm an IT manager trying to keep 3 different systems running. Luckily I can smoke at my desk. I do have to get up every couple of hours to get a caffine fix or to teach people that printers won't print when out of paper or not turned on. At home, hours. Doing my art is relaxing after a day at the office. Especially when nothing's on TV. As long as I got my smokes and some sort of caffine I'm happy.
LOL it sure sounds like we're a healthy bunch, doesn't it? Sitting down for hours and hours gulping caffeine and / or smoking while munching sweets GG

I can sit for hours too. The longest time without getting up was similar to Maxxxmodelz, had a deadline, was working through the night, but I only lasted 6.5 hours before I realized that I ran out of diet coke, and it was 5:30am (more caffeeeen).
Typically the longest I sit at the computer is 2 hours. I drink a lot of fluids, so I have to get up to get refills and use the restroom.
But to counter the long periods of sitting, I try to ride (bicycles) or run at least 5 times a week. I also use the mouse with both hands to avoid RMD. I started getting RMD from clicking with the index finger on the right hand too much (20,000 to 30,000 clicks a day).

butch - did you cry when you lost your hard drive after all those hours of work? HOw awful! I would have cried. bjt860 - it's not lucky you can smoke at your desk while you work because you probably smoke more. In years to come I would put money on it that it won't seem lucky.

I'm very tall too, so flying is pure torture. I have to get up often and stretch, get the cramp out of my thighs etc... There's no way I can sleep on a plane. No possibility to get comfortable, not a chance. But in front of the PC I have a very good chair that's fully adjustable and high enough for me. I can sit for hours if I have to. The worst time-eater of all time is Poser.... I look at the clock and it's 3 at night and I go "Good grief!" No actually there's an even worse time-eating monster - a deadline. When I know I have to deliver something by 12 noon and it's 9 pm and there's still lots to do, wow time goes fast. Panic! Had one of those last week, it took me 4 days to get nornal again. In other words time is relative - and consequently so is the experience of sitting. :] Fish
Time is relative. When you're sitting with an attractive and very friendly young man/woman (take your pick) for an hour, that hour will seem to last just a minute. When you're sitting with an abrasive old hag/geezer for a minute, that minute will seem to last an hour. One of the clearest explanations of Einsteins theory of relativity I ever read.

After about 30 minutes I need to stand, walk around, have a smoke, get coffee, and just stretch. How long do you sit at the puter before stirring?
