Subject: Daz Studio download

rockets ( ) posted Thu, 15 September 2005 at 9:24 AM · edited Wed, 22 January 2025 at 11:58 PM

I've been downloading Daz Studio since about 7:30 this morning and only 80% finished. I'm using Road Runner so if you have a dial up connection, you'd better wait awhile to even try downloading. It's only a 53.6MB file so it shouldn't take this long. :-(

RHaseltine ( ) posted Thu, 15 September 2005 at 9:29 AM

That's the base content, not the application. Several people have reported slow downloads, though it was OK for me yesterday evening (UK time).

Jay7347 ( ) posted Thu, 15 September 2005 at 9:47 AM

Ditto on that slow download...this is some of the slowest I've seen on SAT internet. -jay

xantor ( ) posted Thu, 15 September 2005 at 9:50 AM

It only took two minutes for me, with highspeed broadband.

jjsemp ( ) posted Thu, 15 September 2005 at 9:51 AM

Ditto for me at two minutes - cable broadband.

randym77 ( ) posted Thu, 15 September 2005 at 10:23 AM

DAZ is hideously slow today. It was better yesterday. Downloaded everything in a few minutes last night.

DAZ|Studio was slashdotted, and that can bring powerful servers to a grinding halt for days.

Turtle ( ) posted Thu, 15 September 2005 at 10:44 AM

I have a very fast cable and the downloads are very-very slow. The worse is the content, which I'm downloading now. It says 4 hours left. I would say it's crawling.

Love is Grandchildren.

rockets ( ) posted Thu, 15 September 2005 at 10:51 AM

Same here Turtle and it will probably take the full 4 hours LOL. Just kidding...mine is finally finished and I think it took a little over 2 hrs.

Byrdie ( ) posted Thu, 15 September 2005 at 11:20 AM

I've heard it's slow because Daz Studio's been slashdotted.

xantor ( ) posted Thu, 15 September 2005 at 11:28 AM

What is slashdotted?

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Thu, 15 September 2005 at 11:35 AM

Image hosted by Photobucket.comUhm.. I hate to feel stupid... What is "slashdotted"?

Means it's been "reviewed" on a geek site called Slashdot. (http://slashdot.org) See this thread for details: http://forum.daz3d.com/viewtopic.php?t=24526&highlight=

SlashDot.org, "news for nerds," is a high-traffic web site where computer types hang out. Typically, they post excerpts from news articles of interest to tech types, with a link to the source. They are so high-traffic that often, the sites they link to can't take the load.

So "slashdotted" means featured at SlashDot.org. It can also mean having your web site go down or become very slow because of being featured on SlashDot.org.

Byrdie ( ) posted Thu, 15 September 2005 at 12:19 PM

Yep, that's it all right. Basically the D/S review on Slashdot is comprised of such bitching, whining, whinging and sniping as: "it's not "real" 3d because it's not a modeller and like Poser is therefore the equivalent of playing with Barbies not a real art tool" and "omg, this can make pRon so it must be for perverts" and "tellware is spam so this must be (a) some kind of scam, (b) warez, and/or (c) junk Interesting to note that as of my last visit to Slashdot none of these loudmouths have actually bothered to download and use the software they're so busy trashing. Seriously, how the heck can you review something you've never even tried?

It was atrociously slow for me yesterday downloading the content. Started out at ~90KB/s, then dropped steadily until it was untenable. Quit after several more attempts when it was heading below 20KB/s. And thus the reason why, despite knowing what SlashDot is, I have no compunction to visit. :)

Slashdot did not review D|S. It merely published the announcement that version 1.0 had been released.

Slashdot allows comments on each article. It's usually the comments where things get wild and woolly.

Byrdie ( ) posted Thu, 15 September 2005 at 12:55 PM

That's why I used quotation marks around the word "review" in my first post mentioning it.

rockets ( ) posted Thu, 15 September 2005 at 1:18 PM

Well I guess I'm a glutton for punishment cause I just bought something else at Daz and now I have a 2 hr. download time on a 17MB file...sheez. The bright spot is that if you download Daz Studio they give you a $5 voucher. :-)

randym77 ( ) posted Thu, 15 September 2005 at 1:37 PM

The $5 voucher is if you downloaded D|S while it was in beta. It's supposed to be a thank-you for beta-testing.

rockets ( ) posted Thu, 15 September 2005 at 2:25 PM

Ah, well that splains it. It wasn't there until today. :-)

Please post all this D/S stuff in the appropiate forum.... there's a D/S forum for all of this. Let's keep the poser stuff here and d/s stuff there, that makes life much more easy and saves all of us searching for poser subjects.

What's to search? It looks like most of the Daz Studio posts say "Daz Studio" in the subject line. If you don't want to read them than don't click on them...much less leave a comment.

aeilkema ( ) posted Thu, 15 September 2005 at 3:25 PM

Well this is a forum for poser and there's a forum for d/s, it would be nice to keep it that way imo. If I want to know about D/S I'll go into the D/S forum, if I want to know about poser I'll go here. Even by putting DAZ Studio in the subject as you have done it clearly shows which forum the thread belongs. There's enough ot stuff here already imo, so if these d/s post would go into the proper forum that would tidy up a bit already. You may disagree, it's just the way I do feel about it.

RubiconDigital ( ) posted Thu, 15 September 2005 at 6:29 PM

I would have thought that news about a program that renders Poser content is hardly OT.

Morgano ( ) posted Thu, 15 September 2005 at 6:41 PM

To be fair, this thread isn't irrelevant to Poser users. I did download the new version/release/woddevva of D/S, but I am mainly a Poser user and I also made the mistake of buying a couple of things from DAZ today. It wasn't that there was anything wrong with them; only that the time for the downloads was geologically significant. It doesn't cost me any more, on ADSL, however long the download takes, but, in this country (the UK) and, I suspect, in plenty of others, the cost on a dial-up connection of downloading anything from DAZ right now could be a multiple of the original price of the product (and, thanks, I do know that a multiple of the cost of D/S will still be zero). It is perfectly appropriate to raise this sort of thing in the Poser forum. A Poser user with no involvement with D/S is going to come here for information about Poser issues. He or she will not spontaneously check the D/S forum.

Engel47 ( ) posted Thu, 15 September 2005 at 6:54 PM

Downloading on cable (in Holland) and I just got the content and Power Pose in 9 minutes.

I just love semantics.

byAnton ( ) posted Thu, 15 September 2005 at 9:45 PM

Perhaps they can just close the DazSTudio forum and keep all posts here in the Poser forum. Noone seems to really use it anyway. And as Morgabo pointed out, who is really going to check it regulary to answer questions. It seems dumb to have a seperate forum when post are here anyway. Seems to make more sense just to merge it back with this Forum. At the very least it will give Morrigan one less place to watch, since she mods this forum too. But I am sure it is no trouble. :)

Image hosted by Photobucket.comGotta remember that some people get a bad, itch rash (apparently) whenever the three letters D, A and Z are mentioned here together ;o) shrugs Some people complain about what's on TV as well, instead of just turning it off or changing the channel. And I agree with Morgano, this IS relevant for Poser users, as the slowness of the D*Z website affects Poser users too. Personally I think I hit a lucky moment for my download, because it was fairly fast. But I was doing a lot of other stuff while I was downloading it, so I didn't actually time it.

I downloaded the files soon after the thread appeared here at renderosity, so I might have got them before the rush.

alexic ( ) posted Fri, 16 September 2005 at 2:54 PM

Agree that the topic is relevant here, as long as we're discussing site response and not problems with the DazStudio program. Being new here, I wouldn't think of going to the daz forum in this case. I think of them as a content site primarily, and came here first when I saw how slow they were running. Still slow, but gives me time to look around here while downloading. At least they're not going down.
