As far as I can tell bodypaints and second skins simply put aren't much more than a texture. Personally I do all my textures in Adobe Photoshop CS, other paint programs are out on the market as well such as Coreldraw and PaintshopPro. To do model texturing you need a template for your model, this shows exactly how your model is mapped out so you can fill in all the right places with your own textures. You can find a lot of templates right here in the FreeStuff section under textures or utilities. Hope that helped a little with your question.

There are templates and there are seam guides. Some generous people have taken templates and matched the joining edge seams indicating with color where the textures line up (red to red, yellow to yello, etc.) so I would search Free Stuff for Seam Guide rather than template. http://www.3d.sk/ has samples of clothes as well as human skin for I think $14USD/month. Very high quality except the oldist material, and very reliable site owner. There you can samples of jeans for instance. The main thing in making these second skins is to work on transparent layers rather than the main texture itself. Clother looks like a terrific product but it is too expensive for me, it is an application to apply secondskins to textures but it uses propriatle format for the import. There is a lot of free clothes available for it... thismight be an option if you don't really want to do the work your self.Yes, a bodypaint or second skin is just a texturemap, usually with a pose MAT file to apply it automatically to a figure. If you want to limit things to Poser 5 and later, there are ways in which the new texture can be combined with a normal figure texture, using a third texturemap to control the switching. Otherwise, any skin showing in a second-skinned material zone has to be matched when the texture is made. Some stuff is distributed in formats such as .psd, which makes it easier for the user to make a combined texture.
