Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Feb 15 11:01 am)
I'm no expert but: 1. Everything is parented to something (apart from the Universe). When you load a new figure, it is parented to the Universe. To see what your figure is parented to, use the hierarchy editor and collapse the branches of all the various figures and props until you can see what the parent of your figure/object it. 2. The only way to do that appears to be to use the Object menu -> Change parent. Just parent the figure back to the Universe, which is the default state. 3. They are not quite the same - there are some additional buttons in the hierarchy editor. Also, if you select Figure 1 (for example) and choose Set Figure Parent, you won't see the object you have selected in it - fairly obviously you can't parent a figure to itself. In the hierarchy editor you can set a parent by dragging and dropping the figure/prop onto another object. The one thing you can't do, for some reason, is drag and drop onto the Universe - Poser won't do that. Use Change parent instead.

Also, in general, whe you want to parent a character to something, use the character's Hip. In your scenario, parent M3's hip to the saddle. The hip is always the master bodypart of a character.

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA

Poser 6 (Parenting and Unparenting a Figure) After reading my manual I still have a few Newbie questions. 1. How do I know if my object is parented. I selected an figure M3 and went (Figure > Set Figure Parent) then I looked and saw the figure 2 (the saddle) but I don't know what or how to select the parent (the saddle). There are little men in circles and little people and circles that say center of mass and + and - signs. How do I know what to choose and how do i make it a parent of my figure? 2. How can I unparent a figure if I have chosen the wrong parent etc. 3. (Figure > Set Figure Parent) and (Window > Hierarchy Editor) are these both the same. In other words do they contain the same information and can I edit in either place? Mac Poser 6 Users: How come I can't screen capture a window or palette in Poser using "Grab". As soon as I try and capture something the U.I goses blank. Does anyone know why?
