Subject: Picture of the Week!!

tibet2004uk ( ) posted Thu, 29 September 2005 at 4:09 AM · edited Thu, 23 January 2025 at 1:37 PM

I was browsing the Resource Center and I discovered that there used to be a Photo of the Week contest in the forum!!! I know u guys (mods) are very busy and that's apparently why u stopped doing it, but I think it would be a fantastic idea to put this back on track!! Now, instead of the mods choosing the pic of the week and to save u some work and time, we, the members, could vote. Like, for ex, we can upload the pic we want to be considered for the contest in the forum (or a link to a pic in our gallery) and at the end of each week, we would vote!! It's just a suggestion of course!! Might be other ways to do this. What do u guys think?

Zacko ( ) posted Thu, 29 September 2005 at 7:05 AM

Im not a mod...just a simple member...and i FULLY support you on that one Pascale. Thats a GREAT idea!!!! #:O) YAY!!! That would be sooo much fun!!!! And it would give you a chance to see what personal favorites each member has since i assume they would pick the one they like the most. Yup, i brilliant idea indeed. Yaaay for you P!!!!! #:O)

Or we could just take the pic that heads the list from HOT 20 ?

Considering that when you post a gallery image, wait a little while and go back..it has several news ones ahead of it...the photo gallery is huge with all genre included. I would like a pic of the day but will settle and be quite happy with "Last Week in the Galleries"..simply thining of all the viewing needed just to do that weekly. That service must in itself be a real time consumer to do. I suppose there could be a "vote" on the "weeks" images but am not sure what that would accomplish. The weekly view gives me a wonderful way to discover folks new to me through their artistry. Whatever...we will see. TomDart.

PeeWee05 ( ) posted Thu, 29 September 2005 at 8:01 AM

the weekly votes can become abit much and I do agree that not all ppl that wanna vote look at every image. So maybe there is some sort of 'calculating' that the PC could do in the background for a daily pic and it'll upload into a standard link for yesterday best/most voted/most viewed/most commented pic?

As I wrote in my original post: "we can upload the pic we want to be considered for the contest in the forum (or a link to a pic in our gallery) and at the end of each week, we would vote!!". Which means that ONLY the pics posted in the forum and with the title "pic of the week" for ex, would be considered for the contest and NOT the all photography gallery!!

oh in the forum!!! Sorry missed that! What happened to the banner contest link?

I let Doug know about it dissappearence. :) I like the idea..., let's see if we get any more feedback about it. Still, I agree with Tom and like the Last Week in the Galleries as a way to see great images we may have missed. Whenever I get a picture in there, I feel like a wiener...er, I mean winner. =]

Yup, i agree with Pascale on this one. Thats why i said it would be interesting to see which photo the members chose to submit out of all the pics that person might have uploaded during the week. I think its good that you suggest new ways to challenge ourselves Pascale...."en morot" as we say here in sweden...a carrot....sure it makes no sense...sigh.. #:o/ ...bla bla...and it seems as if me and Kort are back to our traditional "message-crossing", lol.

I can see this being a good idea, so will have to talk it over with our team here in Photo. I know I brought it up awhile back and could do it as in vote format like banner contest. Easiest way.Taking the top Hot 20 images would not work, because those are popularity "who you know" images for the most part. I believe anonymous voting should be the format.Or you could vote on one that we have in the last week in gallery. You realize how many good images there are each week. We hardly get a percentage of them for this feature. Keep the feedback coming.

tibet2004uk ( ) posted Thu, 29 September 2005 at 10:07 AM

I think it would be best if people submitted images for the contest instead of voting for the images in the "last week in the gallery" since most people in there don't even know their images have been chosen and might not be willing to participate. Beside, it wouldn't give the contestants the choice of which image they want to submit. I think a page like the banner contest one is a great idea though! Andreas, I agree with u on that, could be very interesting to see which of their own images people prefer! :)

Oh, I wasn't suggesting that Pascalou. Yes, something like the banner contest would be a good method I think.

yikes! yes... where did the Banner Contest Link go...
I'll see if I can't stick it back up there :]

Now.. as far as "pic of the week"...

Let me tell you... a week goes by awfully darn fast!!
Seems we just finish the LWitG & before we know it it's time again The contest page would need to be cleared & set up weekly

We do have something similar in the Community Center that features a photo for awhile & also on the first page of the Resource Center

to run such a contest, we receive & approve each entry..
I'm not trying to be negative but just looking at all the angles, & can imagine there being quite a few entered each week

then we have a problem with clone voting.. (yes! it really does happen!!!)

The reason the mods did away with it in the past is that it created unnecessary competitive hard feelings.. maybe you don't see it happening now but it does

We'll discuss it & think on it

If we do do something of this nature we'll wait till the upcoming changes to the forums have been made... hopefully before the end of the year

:] thanks!!

What's "clone voting"? And I can see the banner contest link just fine btw! Strange! O_o

tvernuccio ( ) posted Thu, 29 September 2005 at 11:09 AM

i like the idea, Pascale; i think it's a great idea! but i'm not sure if i would participate or not because i really don't see very many images that are posted every week. i don't even get around to commenting on all my fav. artists' images. sigh. i wouldn't feel right about voting on image of the week when i see so few of them. What i would like....i would prefer to vote on one of the images that's included in Last Week in the Galleries. I think doug & cindy do an excellent job of bringing exceptional images to our attention, and i so much enjoy looking at those even if i don't have time to comment on all of them. i would prefer to vote for one of them. Your way is a great idea if you're able to see a lot of what's been posted. i just don't have time to look at many images here, so i just wouldn't feel comfortable voting for image of the week when i don't see so little of what's been uploaded. anyway, whatever ya'all decide is fine with me. just wanted to add my two pennies. :)

tvernuccio ( ) posted Thu, 29 September 2005 at 11:14 AM

crossed with you cindy. i can see where this would make for a lot of extra work on the part of mods/coords. too bad the competitiveness caused such contention.

clone voting is members using alternate log-in names to vote for themselves.. we can see these as same ISPs but then we also have to consider members who live in the same household or area & family who are also members

ovag ( ) posted Thu, 29 September 2005 at 1:33 PM

I think Pascale had a good idea, but understand Cyn's comments about work to achieve that... Maybe, the "last week in the gallery" option is a good compromise. You could "just" put a number to each picture and ask us to vote for 3 picts, on a thread... (If I remember, the Terragen commnunity already makes something like that). For clone voting, it's true it's a problem 'cause if you share the same connection behind a router, all your PCs have the same IP. By the way, if I can help, just ask, because I'm on RR almost everynight ! Wait and see. Olivier.

I have not made it to "LastWeek'nGalleries" but it would be well accepted and a thrill! For those who do, many are photographers I have not seen on the forum and that does give me a chance to take a look at their work. To be fair to all, I like the idea of taking the "LastWeek" images and then perhaps an anonymous vote on those...some of the non-forum posters would be surprised if they got the vote and might come here to talk a little. That would be a plus. And, maybe one of us who do forum talk would be chosen...scary thought for me... That seems a fair method and perhaps not t00 labor intensive on the moderators. This method gives a pre-screening of images and then perhaps to votes. It might be workable and is something to think about. Then again, I don't have to do any of the work....: ) TomDart.

L8RDAZE ( ) posted Thu, 29 September 2005 at 8:33 PM

My only thing about a pic of the week is that it would turn into a another "popularity" type thing! We would have to enforce strict guidelines to have the voting and the submissions be "truly" anonymous. (alot of work on a weekly basis!) Some concerns that come to mind: Submissions could not have ANY kind of signature or watermark (to identify the artist) No frames can be used A submission could NOT be posted to the gallery (the would defeats the whole anonymous aspect!) adhere to posted file size and image dimensions (resizing images take more of the mods time!) Just some stuff to think about! We are interested to hear more of your feedback on this! L8r! Joe

Joe, that is a bunch of work...

DJB ( ) posted Thu, 29 September 2005 at 8:56 PM

One thing that happens here behind the scenes is that we do a lot of html changes, deal with TOS,answer tons of questions, run the contests and last week in galleries....so time is limited. There are times when I would love to just find time to go comment on everyones images.Soon as I do I get busy doing one of the above things. I like this idea a lot.We really have to discuss it in depth between the photo staff before we can do something of this nature. I am famous for saying yeah yeah lets do it, then finding limited time to keep it going. This is not forgotten and for sure will be talked more about to see if we can come to a solution. OK 127 ebots....here we go.

LOL!! So true Douggy!! U always say yes!!! LOL!! U're adorable ! :)

TomDart ( ) posted Thu, 29 September 2005 at 9:31 PM

Doug, I and most likely "we" do appreciate very much the time you mods put in. I was a mod on a couple of forums which were just posts, no images and no real contests..that taxed my time so I bowed out of it, knowing I could not do a good job without more dedication to the task. You folks have shown outstanding dedication to the task and to even ask you to consider this added time burden is alot. Very much appreciated is your desire to look into it, with all the ramifications...and come up with something. I can live with what you come up with. After all, there are the considerations already mentioned, and concerns...and there is your personal time. I will check back in before long and see what might develop. Thanks so much. Tom.

Pascale, sounds like a most cool idea. I just thought of something...Since they are overworked how about another mod or some appropriate photography authority figure to manage such a task as you request. If such a thing is feasable then I think you would make a fine candidate....Watch out for them clones. -Jeff :-)

And yes, there are some people who are so lame and whose egos are so damnably fragile, that they will not only canvas their friends for votes, but will browbeat, bribe, and embarrass people. Worse, they'll cheat and register a few dozen accounts just so they can vote for themselves. The HOT 20 is bad enough... why make more of it? I'll not participate and I'll not vote. Surely getting selected for inclusion in the gallery of the week would be sufficient honor? Carolly

tibet2004uk ( ) posted Sat, 01 October 2005 at 2:09 PM

Well, U don't have to!! It was a suggestion that might interest some people though!!

hauksdottir ( ) posted Sat, 01 October 2005 at 4:40 PM

This reminds me of a conversation I had decades ago with my Major Project Advisor (Special Projects Major, Early Scandinavian Culture). Lindisfarne. Tiny island staffed by Irish monks. (Dr Patrick Ledden was Irish.) They had all these golden altar treasures and jewel-bound bibles and boxes full of gifts sent by wealthy patrons trying to buy their way into grace. The Vikings descended upon them. More than once. : wide grin : He argued that the Vikings ought to have respected the holiness of the site (why? It wasn't Jerusalem or Najaf, or any place where anybody who claimed to be divine had done anything), and of the altarpieces and religious relics (somebody's fingernail clippings? I forget), and left the monastery alone. I argued that if they were foolish enough to put all that gold out on a rock guarded by old men in dresses, they deserved to get it ripped off. If they were holy men, they didn't need to read out of a jewel-bound bible or to wave a golden stinkpot of incense. If they'd truly taken a vow of poverty, the ever-practical vikings would have gone elsewhere... leaving them to meditate in peace. Placing temptation before those known to give in to it is itself a great evil. When I was a mod here, I somewhat fervently argued to get rid of the HOT20 and replace it with a merit-based system. The Poser Gallery had more graft and corruption, because of the market tie-in, but many of those people rigging the voting just did it for their instant of fame. Hollow fame to fill a hollow ego. Setting up contests and challenges and such is a hell of the lot of work. I know. I keep trying to get things going in the Challenge Arena even though I'm not a staffer. So why ask people to set up something which is prone to abuse and fraud? Carolly

cynlee ( ) posted Sat, 01 October 2005 at 7:17 PM

something to ask yourself.. if we use to have a photo of the week contest here & it was successful... how come it didn't last? i suppose Michelle would know the true answer to that... but honestly, in my opinion... i'm not crazy for the idea.. but, i'm still open to suggestions & in making the majority of our members happy

PeeWee05 ( ) posted Mon, 03 October 2005 at 1:39 AM

the thing is with hot 20 is that may ppl come post and view the same works over and over and over (same members) and don't actually browse the galleries for interesting/different and clever works. I've spent hours browsing and have found many pics that are so brilliantly artistic and have huge vision but because they aren't huge and bold and the member has the wrong artist name, no-one motions to have a click and view... Since TUK brought to my attention that the hot 20 is a pop contest I'm starting to agree... No dis to their work, whether it be fantastic or dull, they are artists a like... And should be respected, but whether they deserve that same respect to others only they can answer ? A once again my mouth/fingers may get me into trouble here...
