Subject: Do you love cats?

grae ( ) posted Sat, 01 October 2005 at 6:41 AM · edited Sun, 24 November 2024 at 9:41 AM

Is there anyone else annoyed by the amount of happy snaps of peoples cats in the Photography Category? Look I don't mind photography of animals (or even cats) as long as they are actually trying to be artistic (this is an art community after all). If you want to post pictures of your beloved feline go to www.ilovemypet.com or www.hellomrbiggles.com or something.

mateo_sancarlos ( ) posted Sat, 01 October 2005 at 12:33 PM

Cat snapshots don't bother me (I'd probably be doing them myself if I had one), but maybe they can install a cat filter so people won't have to see them. Be fair, though, then they'd also have to install a dog filter, a hamster filter, a budgie filter, etc.

Do you realise that you are at Renderosity?
This site isn't known for its high standards, sometimes I suspect that everybody and his cat can post an image...

You know what is right for you. I know what is right for me.

mrsparky ( ) posted Sat, 01 October 2005 at 3:02 PM

I'd rather see a picture of a cat than the majority of 3d-porn that masqaureades as "art" here.

Ms Sparky, I agree with you 110%...I have seen so many images that I can not imagine what they will come up next. Why I even wonder when 1 will jump out at me at Albertsons or Publix with their swords and guns and scant clad in nothing less than a texture. Has anyone seen any cats toating a sword or pistol or bazooka lately, or how about a big breasted Mimmy, now that will really get some feedback points....Being a Vet of Cat's and a life long friend of Cat's I would be less the careing person if I were to not state that CAT's were here(our sucky world) way before nudies were. So a few posts of CAT's won't harm the goodie 2 shoe nudie posts as I am certain by any means that the MALE memebers here come here to look at one thing and one thing only...Period and thats all I have to say...Leave the CAT's alone and those who love them and post their images.......

I'm not denying it. There IS a place for the cat on Renderosity. The two above works by Tedz and Swamp are absolute gems (I almost pressed the button :) and perrfect examples of creativity. What gets me worked up is the Happy snap of the Snappy Tom. Must they be shared here when they could be so easily shared elsewhere? The aim of these photographs seems not to be artistic but just to show mans/womans best friend to someone elses' best friend or just to get them posted on the internet. Perhaps if there was a category JUST for pets, outside of photography. Then there might actually be some cohesion to the images in the Photography section. But that just brings me back to my earlier point - go to a designated "I love my pet" website. I don't see any action being taken place on this subject in the short term, or maybe ever (heck, especially when all you Renderosity cat lovers are against it). In the mean-time I'll just have to wait till Tedz Prototype Genre Filter is available for puchase... and then I can throw the switch.

DJB ( ) posted Sat, 01 October 2005 at 7:41 PM

Gee grae I guess me putting in landscapes on most of my uploads must be annoying too. This is what I like best. Some people like cats...some like dogs. Does anyone get sick of Poser boobs or pointed mountains in Bryce...maybe so, but we are a community. We learn by seeing what others do. If you don't like looking at cats don't... This place is not a tailor made site for just one individual. It is a mix of begginers and experienced together. Some people put out a pasted together image in 4 minutes and call it surreal art, and because they have a ton of happy friends they get comments like "they are absolute gems". well this bugs me but I accept it. Deal with it.

Was there a naked pussy in a temple image in this thread? Skrogg thinks that cats ought to be the object of worship, not the worshippers, but she is a bit biased. She also thinks that people who don't like to see cats in all their sustained radiance can go to a nudie site or a kennel-club site or other such dark hole where cats have not yet illuminated it with their presence. mrsparky ( ) posted Sat, 01 October 2005 at 8:49 PM

Grae, midage32065 and dbgrafix all correct. The real problem is a lack of "image filtering" in the gallerys and the marketplace. That can be a problem at times. Particulary if you acess 'rosity at work or use 'rosity to showcase what poser can really do. If rendo checked that images where flagged and categorised correctly and we had the option to choose what we look at. This issue wouldn't arise. Stuff is checked in freestuff, why not in the gallerys ? Then you could choose to look at whatever art or imagery you like.

Pinky - you left the lens cap of your mind on again.

SnowSultan ( ) posted Sat, 01 October 2005 at 9:59 PM

I decided to delete my original reply and agree with mrsparky; having detailed filters on what we choose to look at would really be the closest we could come to pleasing everyone. I read in another thread that Renderosity might be upgrading the forums with new software in the future, so maybe we might be able to do that after all. Thanks, SnowS

First and foremost, Renderosity is a community, a place where people come, from all over the world, to share a common interest. That interest being art in the broadest sense of the word and we each bring something to the table in that respect. It could be 2d, 3d, Writing or Photography.whatever floats your boat, so to speak. The galleries have plenty of TOPICS and GENRES to cover just about any image that is posted, but only in the most general of ways! These selections do give you the ability to drill down to specific areas based on what your interests are. However, to provide filters preferences for all of these topic/genres on an individual member basis, would (IMO) be a programming nightmare! We are all free to share images here. A snapshot of a dog or cat, may not be artistic to some, but to others, it just might! Same goes for all those artistic renders of 3d chrome balls, some may be into that, other might not! Whether its a camera or some cool 3d software application, people have to start somewhere and I feel that SHARING is the first step in that process. Getting over THAT hump, giving a bit of yourself, takes a lot, especially in a community of this magnitude! Just like TV or the radio, YOU have the power to change the channel or station to one more to your liking. Same goes here! Nuff said! L8R!

There was a cat pic above mine that was removed, but I didn't get here in time to edit my post about it, LOL! I gotta agree with cynlee - if you don't want to see it, don't click the thumb, whether it's cats, bugs, flowers, landscapes, or nekkid babes in temples - you can't stop people from posting things you might not like, but by the same token, nobody can make you look at them, either.... and yep, I've got quite a few cats in my gallery - and in my house, too! ;-)

DJB ( ) posted Sat, 01 October 2005 at 10:52 PM

Haha... I actually do like pointy mountains in Bryce...but when the mountains look like they are up in open air...then it bugs me..But I had to learn that from trial and error. Photo gallery would be loaded full of my dogs if they were still alive today.

Well I like images of cats as much as the next guy but there is a limit to the kitty porn I can handle. A while ago when I got home from a day at college I found that when I was at school I had left my computer on and my cat had been downloading this magazine. I'd much prefer the stuff "that masquerades as art" than what a cat will look at

I've gotten flamed for posting a photo of a local interesting land formation in the Photography gallery, and since then I've never posted ANYTHING else there.

Crap like this, with people arbitrarily deciding what is and isn't "artistically worthy" of being posted makes me feel that I don't dare post any of my photography here, no matter how interesting I think it might be or how "artistic" I feel it is, because I just don't want to deal with the bullsh*t.

I've just recently gotten a new camera, actually, and I've been learning some new techniques and working with some new kinds of filters and such, and had just thought that perhaps I had misjudged the Photography community here. Seems that my initial feeling was correct.

what got you flamed for a land formation? Apparently, it was a "tourist picture" and I shouldn't put any sort of signature or watermark on it. roll eyes It was actually pretty interesting and unsual formation, which is why I bothered to post it. But generally speaking, I take pictures of things like macro shots of flowers and cityscapes and some landscape stuff, and, hey, it's probably not ARTISTIC enough for the oh-so-fine Renderosity galleries. smirk I actually have another photography site that I hang out on. Friendly people, even have a whole gallery just for pictures of people's cats (and one for dogs, too, for that matter). :) And it's also got lot of talented and experience photographers who don't feel the need to complain that I might take a picture of my cat (or a flower, or a landscape...). :-) bonni

I get along just fine with my two cats.

I haven't posted any cat pictures in the gallery here -- but if anyone wants to, it's nothing to me.

There used to be site called "cat-scans.com". The site has been taken down. Its galleries consisted of images of cats being scanned as the animal was held down on a scanner. It's difficult to scan a cat that's attempting to get away. So the resulting images were quite interesting.

Oh well.....the site's gone. Might be possible to find an archive of it somewhere.

Its galleries consisted of images of cats being scanned as the animal was held down on a scanner. They weren't always held down. An awful lot of the images were the cats sitting or even sleeping on the scanner. :) That being said, not only does my cat have a section of my personal photo gallery (not to worry, I'm not taking up precious bandwidth here at Renderosity with pictures of her!), she has her own (humorous and tongue in cheek) homepage. Guess I'd better not post the link... (But I will say that it's part of my personal domain, so it's easy to find it you actually want to go look ;-) I'm sorely tempted to post a picture of her in THIS thread, though.... >;-P bonni

bonni, When I went back to look at the provocative rock photo in my files, I decided to invert it, rather than leave it the nice warm fleshy sandstone. If I really wanted to be flagrantly provocative, I'd have posted my other thumbnail AND the nudity flag. That would get more hits, but fewer comments, and I'd rather make art. It's limp, for rock, so I doubt if there'd be a TOS violation... but you never know! ;^) Carolly

OH for goodness sakes... I think Renderosity is a COMMUNITY first and foremost... I have just posted a portrait of my new family member (yes I am a cat person and not afraid to say so)...and so today I had to include my old man Travis cat (who could be said to be artistic because it is HIS coat that is on one of the longest lived cat freebies for the poser and mil cat).... but regardless... I have FRIENDS here and so share my babies...who are all works of art to me as is anyone's pet.... and I would say if you do not want to view cats then don't choose "photography and ANIMALS"... perhaps another category? :) I have also noticed on most ART forums that cat owners are a HUGE percentage... wonder why that is? ;) At any rate, art as beauty is in the eye of the beholder...and there are soooo many eyes on this site that there is something to please everyone! Yea for that!

Life Requires Assembly and we all know how THAT goes!

elizabyte ( ) posted Tue, 04 October 2005 at 11:42 PM

if you do not want to view cats then don't choose "photography and ANIMALS"... perhaps another category? There's also the simple concept that if it's a cat on the thumbnail, and you don't want to see a cat, you don't click the thumbnail. It's been suggested already in this thread, but I thought it bore repeating. bonni

I like both dogs and cats.

Right now, cats fit into my lifestyle better. Dogs make certain demands on your time -- beyond what a cat does.

Of course, on occasion my two cats decide that it's playtime -- like tonight as I was attempting to do some business over the phone in my home office. They've also got a habit of wanting to place themselves right in the middle of whatever it is that I am doing.

This evening , my door kept opening & closing by itself. I can't see the floor past my monitors, so I couldn't quite make out what they were doing. Then one of the cats decided to jump into the trash, and she was promptly pursued by the other cat. This activity resulted in a considerable amount of noise, all while I was attempting to discuss connecting a Micro Motion control loop to a PLC over the phone.

Also, one cat decided that I needed to be paying attention to her: as opposed to doing whatever it was that I was doing. So, she took to bumping me with her head, meowing insistently, and jumping up on the chair next to mine. From there, she wanted to see what I was up to -- so she jumped part way over onto my chair in order to obtain a better vantage point.

Of course, after my extended phone call was over both cats went sound asleep.

They know just what to do: and they know just when to do it.

;)

BTW - things like this usually happen when I'm playing around in Poser, too.

I can attest that the cats on cat-scan weren't necessarily held down. I scanned all my 3 cats, and they just sat there, on the scanner. One of them moved a paw during the scan, which led to a very interesting 5-footed cat LOL I also scanned my guineapig btw.. just for fun. XENOPHONZ, cats are supposed to place themselves on whatever you're working on / reading in. Directly proportional to the importance of what ever it is. Same with noise. G Uhm.. as for the original question.. Yes I love cats (how can you not?) and I'm guilty of having a few pics of them in my gallery as well. Sorry, I didn't know it wasn't allowed :o(

I also have 2 dogs. But there has always been somthing strange about my pets. My dog Monu is'nt the sharpest tool in the shed, and Nanna acts more like a cat! Every time I try to do something like eat, type, work, sleep, she comes up and nudges my leg or my arm, depending on whats in nudgeing range, and insists on being pet all hours of the day or night. My cat on the other hand, constently ignors me and only contacts me when she's hungry. Theres something wrong with that.
