Dear Renderosity members, Last night around 7:00p.m. there was a major switch failure at our co-location facility. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Best regards, LillianH Renderosity Marketing Manager

switch failure? for 14 hours? did the co-lo facility actually fry half the facility? ;) smack them puppies for notpaying attention.

Elminster_ZK ( ) posted Tue, 04 October 2005 at 3:00 PM

Well, I'm just glad everything is back up and running. Those 14 hours for me were like a cocaine addict going through withdrawl. It's sad but true - I nearly died. Whew, everything's fine now. Deep breaths.... Thanks for explaining, Lillian

shemia ( ) posted Tue, 04 October 2005 at 3:40 PM

I thought it was just me that had the problem, so at least we know what it was now. The funny thing was that RDNA had the same issues so it must have been pretty big. I couldn't access this site or theirs, it kept timing out or informing me that this "item" (cant remember the exact term used)contained no data... I use Mozilla Firefox so I tried IE6.0 and it went to the "This site may be having technical difficulties" screen. Thanks for letting us know Lillian.

It is currently 22:30 Renderosity time and you are still fading in and out. About half the time, when I am switching pages, I will get a 404. Usually if I wait a few minutes, I can get the page I want, but sometimes it takes a few tries.

Attached Link: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

The DNS still hasn't propigated to my ISP. I had to use a workaround, once I found out from someone who can get here what the new IP address is. Here's what I did, in case anyone wants to know or pass it on (since obviously, if people can't get here they can't read this ;-). I couldn't at all, until I got the new IP address and added it to my hosts file. More information on the Windows hosts file: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm All I did was add these two lines: 66.18.106.197 renderosity.com 66.18.106.197 www.renderosity.com to c:windowssystem32driversetchosts and rebooted. Voila, Renderosity now answers perfectly. Note that this is the location of the hosts file for Windows XP. Other systems have it elsewhere (see the URL I gave for details and other technical things to consider). Also note that if R'sity changes their IP address again, you'll need to change your hosts file, or you'll be redirected to whatever IP is in your file. bonni

Well, without Bonni's post over at Poser Pros, I'd still be in the dark. Thanks for that Bonni. However, the site is still as flakey as a dandruff laden teenager. How about an e-mail to all members explaining what is going on? And the month had started out reasonably well, sales wise......I guess that's the end of that, though.

MGD ( ) posted Wed, 05 October 2005 at 12:58 AM

@elizabyte That's interesting ... very interesting ... You're saying that 66.18.106.197 renderosity.com 66.18.106.197 www.renderosity.com But I'm seeing renderosity.com = [ 66.18.99.34 ] market.renderosity.com = [ 66.18.106.198 ] In addition, both SamSpade.org and visualroute.com also report this renderosity.com [66.18.99.34] Now, when I ping renderosity.com, I see ... Pinging renderosity.com [66.18.106.195] Looks like someone is using IP addresses to play musical chairs. MGD

I used Bonni's approach and got roight in. Didn't reboot though so.. who knows, it could have been a coincidense? Anyway, until I put those 2 lines in the Hosts file I couldn't get in, no matter what I tried (some reported they would get in by omitting the www in the url, but that didn't help for me) Oh well, I'm in. phew This was almost as bad as the Big LiveJournal Blackout LOL

Am still having intermittent problems accessing parts of the site. I seem to be able to get into the forums ok sometimes, but if I want to get to other parts of the site I get timed out. A couple of times before this it wouldn't even let me onto the site and gave me a timeout message. :o( Hope it gets fixed real soon. It's a teensy bit frustrating...

Kewl, thanks Bonni I also followed your tips at PoserPros and got in (after fumbling around wondering how to add the IP address to hosts). LOL I was in earlier without doing this, but it went away so went back to fumling with IP addresses.

It's very unstable, once typing 66.18.106.197 in Firefox worked, now it only leads to the main page and login doesn't work. In this present moment I returned to the old Netscape 4.80 and Win95 and is working without the need of typing anything.

At the ptb: Ya know if I can ebot messages everytime someone makes a post in this place why cant I get an email telling me that the site is down, and when to expect it back up? I mean it would have saved me the trouble of mucking around in a host file, when I have no idea what a host file is to begin with. Thanks bonni for the heads up though, once I found out what a host file was, and where to find it, I just opened it up in my text editor, cut and paste the addy's you gave, and saved the changes, voila! instant renderosity. Now I only hope that when I reboot my computer will still work and that I didn't mess anything vital up. LOL

Please read my entry, Toss your cookies (above), as it explains the solution I have found. From what I can best ascertain, the problem is the ability of the site to correctly interpret data from cookies that have been written to the hard drive. As long as the cookies are being read from RAM and not from the cookie file on the drive, the session function seems to work just fine. But the first moment it has to rely on data from the hard drive cookie, it times out. I tested this by deleting all Renderosity cookies, then locking the cookie file so that it could not be overwritten. This insured that no Renderosity cookies would be retained on the drive. Each time I launch the browser and click a page link (other than index, which is free space for everyone, member or not), it redirects me to log in. I use browser memory to autofill the log form. I log in manually and navigate without a single problem. The problem is that you have to delete the cookies every time you start a new session and manually log in each time (or lock the cookie file and forget deleting them).

Jennyfnf ( ) posted Wed, 05 October 2005 at 4:27 PM

When this happened once before, I made a link from My Favourites straight through to my gallery. I can get in no problem clicking on that and then navigating to the forum and galleries from there.

Well, at present, I'm in, but the first time I was able to get back in wasn't until this morning (Oct.5th), and the site went down, at least for me, on Oct. 3rd! I tried everything I knew, and nothing for two days! Even now, it's slow, and I'm afraid it might go down again. My problem is, I'm paying to be able to do 3 uploads per day, and I'd really rather not keep missing days! Gah! I hope they get this permanently fixed, and soon as possible, whatever the heck the problem was/is. At least I now know it wasn't just my end of things....

Lyne ( ) posted Wed, 05 October 2005 at 5:35 PM

Many folks do know about cookies... I tried every hidden temp and cookie file... deleting everything I could...so I KNOW it was not on my end and with RDNA being down at the same time, I knew it was in TN at bondware... I was just worried it was a storm of some sort. I am finally able to get in here and have actually caught up on my gallery favorites...hope things settle back down and all is well again.

LOL you lot want to try being an admin on a game site that went down the same time R'sity did. Talk about a panic, not the admin but players that couldn't get in and set things up for playing the game at that time. We the admin of that site knew something major was wrong elsewhere so we just sat and waited until we could get back in on the site then carried on with doing what we had to. Have fun all, take care and please remember that when something like this happens the admin are on the ball and checking out where or what the problem is.

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

elizabyte ( ) posted Sat, 08 October 2005 at 1:11 AM

You're welcome. :-) I posted the information at Poser Pros and Faeriewylde, as well, in the hopes that if people were having trouble they'd be able to find the info. I also heard that people were having cookie problems; I think it is related to the DNS issues, but as I've never examined a R'sity cookie to see what's in it or how it's written, I can't confirm that. However, once your computer can find the site and you log in again, you shouldn't have further trouble with cookies or anyting else (at least, until R'sity changes IP address again, in which case you'll need to edit the hosts file again). bonni
