Subject: RO offline

So, was Renderosity offline for everyone else since last night server time? I just now was able to log back on. Amazing how much I need to visit this place. It is like having my morning coffee...the day just doesn't start right without it! ;]

I was also unable to access Renderosity since about 1am Eastern time zone. Rentech.net (their hosting service) reported "global issues". Using VisualRoute.VisualWare.com I was seeing a failure after 216.248.8.234 -- a telcove.net hub in Coudersport, PA > It is like having my morning coffee ... > the day just doesn't start right without it! ;] Right ... and thinking about it made my day start just a little later. MGD PS, Still seeing some failures while posting this response.

I was still having trouble around 2AM EST. Looking at the message Cynlee posted, I saw that elizabyte was able to access renderosity as 66.18.106.197 renderosity.com 66.18.106.197 www.renderosity.com But I was seeing renderosity.com = [ 66.18.99.34 ] market.renderosity.com = [ 66.18.106.198 ] In addition, both SamSpade.org and visualroute.com also report this renderosity.com [66.18.99.34] Now, when I ping renderosity.com, I see ... Pinging renderosity.com [66.18.106.195] Looks like someone is using IP addresses to play musical chairs. MGD

Still intermittent. For me, it is about 1/2 hour on, 1/2 hour off.

Nah, mine is only the 23". (I know, ONLY...) What would **really** be nice is that 30" on they have... ((drool)) I suffer along at home with a 19" CRT.

Greetings, This is just a heads-up ... it seems to me that there are still some DNS issues ... 1. When I try a ping, my broadband provider reports C:>ping renderosity.com Pinging renderosity.com [66.18.106.196] ... and also ... C:>ping www.renderosity.com Pinging www.renderosity.com [66.18.106.195] 2. visualroute.visualware.com (a very useful remote trace system) reports both renderosity.com and www.renderosity.com as renderosity.com [66.18.99.34] and www.renderosity.com [66.18.99.34] 3. SamSpade.org (an anti SPAM service) reports that Server Used: [ whois.networksolutions.com ] renderosity.com = [ 66.18.106.195 ] Server Used: [ whois.networksolutions.com ] www.renderosity.com = [ 66.18.106.197 ] 4. SamSpade.org (an anti SPAM service) also reports that it cannot do a reverse whois ... Server Used: [ rwhois.rentech.net ] 66.18.99.34 = [ www.renderosity.com ] ERROR: Unable to connect to rwhois.rentech.net for 66.18.99.34 ... Aborting ... I would say that there are still some significant routing issues if I can see so many different IP addresses for renderosity.com and/or www.renderosity.com MGD

cynlee ( ) posted Thu, 06 October 2005 at 10:30 AM

interesting bit of info MGD.. so what would cause such a thing? is it "bottle necking" there in PA?

MGD ( ) posted Thu, 06 October 2005 at 11:18 AM

@Cynlee My SWAG (that is, my Super Wild Assed Guess [vbg]) is that as the outage progressed (that is, if an outage can be said to have progress) ... perhaps 'unfolded' would be a better appelation. ... OK, starting over ... As the outage unfolded, some 'quick fixes' were applied -- quick fixes such as creating new IP addresses. It would seem that more than one alternate IP addresses was created (possibly even conflicting or contradictory IP addrssses). As each new domain name to IP address is 'published' it has to propagate to all of the DNS (Domain Name Servers) on the internet. As that process has not completed (and seems to still be ongoing), conflicting IP addresses may still be interfering with access to the site. It is also possible that as RenTech.net (the co-location or host provider) may still be reconfiguring around the router (probably their backbone router) that failed. However, changes to the local routing (within RenTech.net) shouldn't need to publish new IP addresses. Then again, as I don't (can't) know exactly what went wrong ... I shouldn't try to second-guess the people working to fix it. MGD

i find technology fascinating.. thank you for your SWAG explanation.. i think you are on the right path ;]

@Cynlee > on the right path Huh!!! If I'm "on the right path", be careful ... be very careful ... and wear heavy duty (industrial strength) hiking boots. ... Safer, fewer injuries that way. LOL MGD
