Subject: problem with export of bollean object in vue!

estherau ( ) posted Sat, 15 October 2005 at 10:06 AM · edited Thu, 23 January 2025 at 10:12 AM

When I export my grouped object as .obj it comes into poser flat as a pancake, and when I export it into 3ds it looks much better but has lost its nice booleaness. I have latest version of vue I think:- 5.08-02 build 278365 Anyone else had problems Or success? love esther

Have you baked to polygons first? And what do you have against pancakes? I love them! Oh, not to forget - try maybe to import the results into another program than Poser. We found out in the last export/import discussion that Poser has sometimes problems with correct import! To avoid the word bug here.

A lady goes to see a psychiatrist and talks to him for two hours. Finally he says, "well Mrs Smith I can't find anything wrong with you. Why did you come to see me?" She says "My family were worried and they insisted that I visit a psychiatrist because I like pancakes." "There's nothing wrong with liking pancakes. I love them!" "Do you doctor? You must come over to my house then. I've got trunks full of them in the attic." Well I have carrara on order, but at present I only have vue and poser. When I tried baking to polygons I got a sort of pancake, not as flat as the original pancake. Love esther

How you describe the problem it is more in the original boolean (we all love booleans, some of our best friends are...) than the export. You always can re-import the export into Vue to check, or download a free 3D modeller like Wings3D or Blender. Just for checking things like that. How about sending me that bulimian boolean so that i can check it out? As i said, i love pancakes!

"Bake" to polygons, import to "blender" - gosh this sounds just like a cooking show to me. Are you teasing me Walter? I didn't try reimporting it. I can send it to you though if you like? And the vue file too. I could zip them and upload them somewhere. well I got to go to bed now. email me in case you've changed your address. Esther, i always am teasing you, no question! What fun! Nope, until now i have not changed my address so send it over. Ok, maybe i should change and move to pancake island now - but probably only after recieved your caky mail. Sleep well and don't dream about pancake moon, could be that you can't export that to your psychiatrist! PS: I can test it only on Monday our time - Vue is sleeping in the office right now! By any reason.

Boolean pancakes are best made with buttermilk. Collecting is mad? What about stamp collectors? And i hear that many people attempt to collect trunks full of money - guess we are all a bit mad. For example, i collect puns.

A friend of mine named his dog "Entomologist" because of the dogs large collection of fleas and such.

Have you tried export in 3DS format? I've found that works better, but don't know if it will consume Boolean pancakes. And i don't know if 3DS is digested by Poser.

You could export as 3DS, then convert back to something Poser likes in a free convertor, like 3D Object Convertor

I reported Boolean export problems to e-on eons ago and they fixed at least part of the problems - have not tested Booleans much since then.

Happy pancakes :o)

Yes, Poser will consume 3DS, though not with syrup, it gums up your runtimes.

estherau ( ) posted Sat, 15 October 2005 at 7:01 PM

i exported to 3ds and imported to poser - no pankake but no boolean group - ie separate meshes! love esther

Esther, you need to bake the boolean to polygons, with a fairly high quality setting, before exporting.

estherau ( ) posted Sun, 16 October 2005 at 7:40 PM

that works - now i wonder if pancake problem is just with booleans as i want to export whole scene love esther

Pancake is probably only when you leave them as booleans. And surprise surprise, wasn't it my first question wether you have baked the pancake? ("Have you baked to polygons first?"

When i first heard of Vue and saw the beautiful and photo-realistic results, i had hopes of assembling scenes in it for export to a 3D immersive web application - although i knew there would be serious issues about lowering polygon counts.

Now i realize that a lot of Vue 5i's beauty comes from procedurals (which are the future of 3D, IMO). But procedurals are not standardized, and are "virtual" objects, not meshes, so many can't be exported. Vue can try to convert procedural stuff into real stuff for export (fractal terrains converted to meshes, etc.) but then the beauty from procedural implementations is lost.

Good for exporting beautiful backdrops, sky boxes, alpha facers (billboards), animations and some objects though.

unless your husband refuses. Nah, the official word from vue is you can import without baking. I just tried a new boolean and it worked in poser without baking. doesn't look very good though. still trying different settings. Love esther
