Steam/smoke coming from the kitchen?? Am eagerly awaiting WIP 583.... :-) (When I 1st read Gormenghast, many years ago now, it was the 1st novel I'd ever read that was so full of well-done description that I could mentally picture it and even taste the chalk-dust floating in the air of the schoolroom..) Well done! A major epic journey in the making! Cheers, Diolma

An observation...
IIRC, the 1st 2 books took place entirely within the castle. There was a claustrophobic feel to it, even if the castle was so huge it extended to infinity...
But in book 3, it suddenly went outdoors, and got motor-cars and "modern" stuff, which (as far as I was concerned) shrunk the castle back to being just another rather large edifice. Like in any other fantasy (although I admit that the "fantasy" genre hadn't been invented when Peake wrote the book..)
I never did finish book 3. It took away the "magic" for me.
Suggestion:
Do away with the landscape, fill instead with more castle..:-)) (Back to infinite castles..)
Cheers,
Diolma
(Edited for typos. Bet I missed some..)
