This is my daughter Paige.I've been trying my hand at portraiture.Since I'm a newbie at photoshop and I really don't know what I'm doing I thought I'd ask you guys what you think. Is there one you like better than the others? LOL Maybe they all stink! And what do you think of the cropped one?

Oooooh!! She's gorgeous!! What a superb model she makes!! If it was mine, I think I would go highkey with that one!! As for these, I prefer the first one here! But I also think it needs a 'lil bit of work. The original crop is great IMHO but the image requires some colors/contrast/level adjustements I think. Or.....more Xtreme postwork which would be the route I would take. A really beautiful portrait!!

Margana ( ) posted Sun, 30 October 2005 at 9:11 PM

I love high key Pascalou. But I can't seem to get it high key enough for some reason. The face keeps getting muddy.Maybe there's a technique I'm not trying.I've desaturated it,used greyscale(in the tool bar),and used monochrome in the channel mixer. All three yield the same muddy grey.Maybe there's another way I don't know of...Thanks guys.

I think to go high key now though you need the original. I tried and lost a bunch of mid face details. OK i gotta get this LWIG done...just a fool around break here.

I definitly prefer the first one....or the second....hmmm...a mix between the two would be perfect imo. Gorgeous portrait by the way! I bet shes mighty pleased with that one.

How come we say 'It's colder than hell outside' when isn't it realistically always colder than hell since hell is supposed to be fire and brimstone?

I love that second one!! Wicked!! I did a highkey but the quality sucks cos it's really grainy and not very sharp cos the pic is a tad unfocused but if u work on it on the high res, it should look much better! I also tried a different crop as u can see!

Margana ( ) posted Sun, 30 October 2005 at 9:46 PM

Oh thank you Pascalou!I love it!Yeah it's grainy but that's so what I was trying to get.I guess its never gonna happen unless I go back to the original... LOL Yeah she's liking it alright. Thanks for the input Andreas.I guess you like Doug's then...

LOL! Youre right, thats exactly the version i like. I tell ya its really hard to make any valid judgements on this horrilbe LCD we have here at work....it SUCKS!!! Just like my co-worker...UGH. Edit, cause i forgot to tell ya how much i loved that last one of YOURS. That highkey shot. AWESOME!!! I like your hightkey version too P, but i think you cropped it too tight. I prefer the original crop without a doubt.

I gave it a quick go too! As was stated the image does have a slight blur goin on! This result was after 6 layers in Photoshop, using Highpass filter with the Screen and Overlay blending modes! Also the Virt Photographer "ambience" setting Instead of the tight crop I chose a wider look to the image! So I added more canvas to the right!

GORGEOUS JOE!!! I really like that!!! However now i feel that shes a little too centered for my taste. What a grateful subject to be working on though, cause no matter what you do it could never end up ugly. #:O)

Well i liked the very first photo. I decided to see what i could do with it. I have no idea if it is n improvement or not or evenif it is what you may have been going for. I used psp and photoshop effects and settings to adjust a lot of things lol. Just thought i would join the fun. Lee

AW thank you guys.I love to see what you're doing with my shot!It really is great to see what others can do! Joe...I love how yours is high-key and yet color.I gotta stick with my original crop tho.I like it off to the right like that... Thanks Lee.Yours is grainier and yet it looks really good.I'm glad you're joining in.Please keep doing so. Thanks Andreas.I like my high-key shot, too.Funny how it looks nothing like her in reality but it came out cool,I think... Please continue to show me what I could do with this shot folks.I really want to do the best I can with it.Should I post the original?Would that help? The quality is so bad here at under 200...

Like the first one, but I did a few enhancements. As always it is only the photographer who knows what they originally saw, so any alterations are my imagination not what you saw in your minds eye. Still hope you and Paige like them :)

marlene, you asked which one...i do like #3...the postwork you did appeals to me. i like how you composed it, but i think i would crop this one tight. i think i cropped it kinda the way Pascale did. i've been playing with this image for a couple of nights now and a little this morning. keep in mind i've been half asleep while working on them. i never use greyscale. i don't like how that works. i prefer using channel mixer. i also like working with curves because you can adjust the reds, greens & blues. anyway,i love that high-key posterized one you did of her too. Richard's version is awesome! sorry if i'm rambling. trying to hurry before i leave for work. here's one version. i know it's weird, but like i said i did these while i was half-asleep and was just having fun playing. i made this yellow version the way i liked it. Paige is so sweet and sunny...guess that's why i used yellow. silly me. :) tell her hi!!!! :)

here's another version without the silly sunny yellow! :)

i wanted to do some selective sharpening of her eyes on both of these but i didn't have time, Marlene. :(

anyway, i had fun playing with this image. i love how you shot her so intensely. this image is jam-packed with emotions!! can't wait to see more of her! and Paige is an excellent model! :) edit: looking at these i'm still not happy with what i did. i think i still need a tighter crop. i dunno...i just find postwork really difficult.

I think you did really good Sheila, but im gonna have to go against both you and Pascale. I dont prefer that tight crop. I like what Joe did, although i would have cropped that on the right to keep her from being too centered. But having Paige on the left side of the photo instead of the right is definitly the way to go since her head is slightly rotated in that direction. Some great feedback you got here Marlene. Thats why i love this forum, everyone is so helpful. #:O)

I can't agree more. This forum is a wonderful place. Sheila,I mailed you a response but for the record, lol, you know I said I loved them both.I think that 'yellow' looks really cool and kind of funky,(in a good way,lol)...except on my screen its slightly greenish not 'sunny yellow' as you say. But,sigh I'm back on my 'resurrected-from-the-dead Lappy',that always seemed to be 'off'...Guess it really should be calibrated if I'm going to be stuck with it for a while... Does anyone else see Sheila's as greenish? I want to thank you all again.I sooo appreciate the time and energy you took with my little pic. Lol it shows me how long a way I have to go before I can ever get to where you guys are. Wish I knew what Richard's enhancements were....I love the dewy glow she has in it... Okay,I've blabbed enough...See ya guys! :^)
