Subject: Hot 20 again

Dann-O ( ) posted Sat, 05 November 2005 at 4:51 AM · edited Wed, 05 February 2025 at 4:41 AM

I will not comment on the quality of the art involved. But there are 7 places on the hot 20 that are taken up by 2 artists. I think that there should be room for other artists on the hot 20 rather than have it dominated by 2 arists. This can be doen with code even by makign it so that you can only have one piece at a time there. I woudl liek to see soem of the great works by other artists rather than have 2 or tree artists dominate it. Sorry a bad topic but this is a bit of a different take on it.

Thanks ICM. I look at the galleries but miss a lot. I got a good workout for my vote button.

Thanks for posting those links Rod. Some really nice artwork indeed. Looks like there are a few more names in the Hot 20 now Dann-0 8)... Pidgy has a nice image in there now.

I do like a lot of what is there. Just that it is annoying when there are a large number of pieces by one or two artists. I am not annoyed at them getting there more I am annoyed at them dominating the gallery and keeping us from seeing something else. If you could only have one picture in the hot twenty at a time then we would get to see 5 more pieces by other aritists. It takes me a week to get one done anyways and I work on them every day.

Sorry if I missed anyone.....took a quick cruise through the gallery. Mostly this is to prompt more activity. There's a bunch of talent out there..... If an artist falls in the forest(gallery) and there's no one there to experience it, does he really make an impact?

guslaw ( ) posted Sat, 05 November 2005 at 7:19 AM

I'm not sure multiple images by the same artist in the H20 are the artist's fault. IMO the problem lies with the mindless, automatic vote-button clicking by the artist's circle of friends and admirers... I think most of these folks will simply vote for any new post by their buddy and add the same mindless, automatic "WOW, this is the greatest since your last WOW this is the greatest" comment without even looking at the image. (...witness the plethora of SOW pictures; 2, 3 or 4 at a time - all essentialy the same...) I don't know what the solution is but I think it would help if we voted for images that are, in our opinion, good and deserving without first looking who the artist is (and that's is not easy to do)...

bandolin ( ) posted Sat, 05 November 2005 at 7:53 AM

Thanks for those links ICM. I often don't find the time to peruse the galleries. I wish there was a way to select the best of the best and just view those. Sadly, the Hot20 just doesn't work well enough for me in that respect.

I don't have a problem with this. It's up to us to vote other worthies into the h2o. @Dann-o: A Week to do one? I've been working on one piece for most of the year. If I'm lucky it'll be done before Christmas.

It's my fault. I do not get to browse the galleries as often as I would like to because pages take so damn long to load on my machine. I think alot of people must not realize that the vote button actually does something.

Vote early and vote often ! Words to live by. One of my images "Inn" recently made it to number 18, much to my surprise,....especially since there were no SOW's or poems involved. Go figure ! Hot 20.... Not unlike entries in the "Top of the Pops" 20 in music. Not in there necessarily 'cos they're good, just there 'cos enough youngsters like the band (this week), and so go out and buy everything they've recorded... Personally I totally ignore the TOTP 20; (When was the last time Beethoven made TOTP??) I similarly ignore the Hot 20 here (and for similar reasons). Cheers, Diolma

I remember orbiter[misspelled his name sorrow] but I can not find his gallery. He had 5 in the hot 20 at one time and no one say anything. they all say good job and give him high fives over his work which is good work too. He the one that made hot air ballols going over landscapes. Just reat what is the hot 20. Here the link to it. so if you make this rule it goes for everyone here .. be careful for what you wish for.

what you see is not what you know; it in your face

AgentSmith ( ) posted Sat, 05 November 2005 at 6:00 PM

The decision to allow members a limited number of pics in the Hot20 at any one given time is on the chopping block, so to speak. A decision will be reached, I'm sure, when we have the advanced algorithm in place for ascertaining what pics make it to the Hot20. AgentSmith

ICM two of the pics you listed made the hot 20 which is cool. I just want more variety rather than just look at a collection of one or two artists with friends that vote. When I say a weeks time I mean every day a few hours too. Got unfinished stuff all over my hard drive uncompleate for a number of reasons.

Looks like the most of us have given up and left the battlefield to the SOW-Admires. Meanwhile I'm rolling on the floor laughing when I see under the 528. sphere comments like 'most excellent, bravo, a real masterpiece, best I ever saw' and so on. Can't take this for serious anymore! Obviously there's no need for quality any longer. Why wasting weeks and months for creating a picture if you can have more 'success' with a 5-click-pic? The H20 here has meanwhile become one of the biggest jokes in the 3d-scene. So forget it and look for inspiration elsewhere, for example here in the beginner section ;). Don't laugh, I saw pictures there which techniques where better than some of our H20-candidates.

AgentSmith ( ) posted Sat, 05 November 2005 at 8:16 PM

As the Hot 20 states; "The "Hot 20" is for entertainment purposes only" Amen. It's a tiny slice of cool if I get in there, otherwise, no big deal. For myself, the image comments I get from you kids, mean far more to me. AS

What is nice about it is when you get in some people who might have missed your work before now will have a chance to see it. But if it is being monopolised by a few who have a ring of people who vote for their image. I would like to see some other ways of viewing pictures like the weeks most commented or weeks most viewed. Right now if you look at most commented or most viewed you will get a very nice pic by Rochr from 2001. I like seeign those too but what is popular now. (somehting outside of the hot 20)

"The "Hot 20" is for entertainment purposes only" double amen... I still go to the hot20 occasionally, because despite the circle of friends or admirers that throw the word "brilliant" around like a frisbee, some truly cool images still show up. I kinda wish that alot of the voting here was done by people not directly in the community - because no matter what, this is still an internet community, and people for some reason or the other love to be popular on the internet, so we'll see those little groups of worshipers... regardless, this is an awesome community - because the people who are interested in art, and genuinley want to help others and progress themselves, outweigh (but don't neccesarily out-number) the others. I'm mostly talking about you guys:) by the way, how the hell is everyone?

Ilad ( ) posted Mon, 07 November 2005 at 8:20 AM

a lot of the images i have seen in hot20 really deserve to be there...and if an artist is featured more than once..and his or her work is excellent..then it is most unfair to claim that they are there simply because they have friends who vote for them. I agree, sow in hot 20 for most part, is ridiculous..but to 'punish' others whose work is very good is equally wrong.. limiting to , say, 2 images per week would be fine I guess..but i still feel that let the people decide.. thanks for letting me express my viewpoints..
