I will do that tonight when I get home. It took me about an hour of trials and errors to get something that behaved the way I wanted. I am not done with my experimentations... by far :)
Can I make a suggestion for experimentation? I know C5's SSS assumes there are no interior objects - so if you were to put a bone model inside one of those fingers, it wouldn't have any affect. But what if you booleaned out the bone, creating a hollow in the finger? Depending how it does the scattering, that might create a fairly realistic shadow. I'd appreciate it if you'd pop a cylinder into one of the fingers and give it a try.
Actually, my next test will be to see how SSS behaves with other objects, such as a primitive placed between the light bulb and the hand.... will it cast a shadow through the hand ? Carving out bones inside the hand is a good idea. Now I have to figure out how to make sure that hand turns into a solid (and not a hollow shell).
Carrara treats SSS just like most of the "big name" programs - it's all fake. Carrara is a Surface modeler as compared to a Solids modeler (the kinds of modelers used by industrial engineers/designers) Therefore, Carrara doesn't calculate internal disturbances from other objects/solids for effects like SSS. Things like Caustics and Refraction are handled a little differently than SSS because Carrara assumes that there is nothing inside an object so it simply looks at the value you've assigned for Caustics/Refraction and "bends" the light accordingly. To get an idea what "real" SSS would do to your computer on render, try creating multiple glass spheres inside of each other, all with different caustic, transparency and refraction settings, select Indirect lighting and render. When it finishes next year, let us know if it was worth the wait. ;-) The variables and calculations required to do "real" SSS are massive because you have to plan and manage different values through a solid. That's why it's faked.
Does carrara 5 play nice with poser 6? Has anyone tried it? Love esther
I aim to update it about once a month. Oh, and it's free!
Carrara 5 can import poser content two ways : - natively : you can import what I said above (props, figures, clothes, etc) - using Transposer : this should add support for dynamic hair and clothing. I said 'should' because I have poser 6 and the Transposer module does not recognize the poser 6 executable as a valid file. I guess we have to wait for eovia and e-fontier to talk to each other.
Maybe eovia and ef won't be talking if you can pose and morph poser people in carrara, I don't think ef would like that much. Love esther

I just pulled out an old scene and tossed in a dash of SSS.
Mmmmm BRAINS!!!!
Love this stuff.

So that is where you been storing them? :D estherau, You can use DAZ Studio for posing and morphing. Dynamic hair and cloth is primarily all that's missing. Since it is only at version 1...I think it will start to pick up soon w/ sdk coming out.Blender has some really cool dynamic stuff, but doesn't really support poser format. It is a good thing that carrara does support other formats because for some reason...nobody supports theirs.
No need to think outside the box....
Just make it
invisible.
Love all the new stuff C5 has. Definately want to get it.

A common trick for faking a solid in a surface modeler is to place a tiny hole somewhere connecting the two surfaces, which the program will then accept the inner surface as the interior of the outer one. I just ordered Poser 4 Pro, and sent in my "buy Carrara 4 get Carrara 5 free" form yesterday, so if/when I get ahold of the beta, I'll try and post some examples.

I started playing seriously with that effect in the beta and with the rest of the updates while I am at it. I will try to post more if it is presentable. One comment though about Poser - I have been blown away by the extent of poser files support in this new version : - import of figures and props - morphs editable in Carrara - pose files applicable in Carrara - 'conform to' right in Carrara - skeletons from cr2 files ! Who needs poser again ? :)
