I'm also having problems when I render. if I use IBL it takes hours and hours for just a low poly item :-( it's usually not a problem for me to render with IBL. and if I decide to render one normal infinite light with the auto settings set to the highest, it won't even render. it just stands there lying to me about how it's rendering. hehe reinstalling P6 now.

kristinf ( ) posted Thu, 10 November 2005 at 8:50 AM

I tried installing it and it completely killed Poser. It only loads the first screen then dies without an error message or anything. When I tried reinstalling Poser6 over the top it was the same, I had to put it in another folder. I reinstalled SP2 and then copied my runtime (geometries, libs and textures only) and it was the same again. I have again reinstalled and then gone back to service pack 1. I have a large (70 - 80 gb) runtime, I don't know if that is the problem?

I just got done reinstalling P6, and that didn't seem to do the trick :-S

I also sent it to the correct directory, it acted like it was installing but wondering from you folks who got it installed what is your version number when you go to help>about? Marque

I have now v6.0.2.118 on a AMD Athlon XP 2800+ 2.08 GHz 960MB of RAM NVIDIA GeForce It seems to be running fine so far no problems yet......

AntoniaTiger ( ) posted Thu, 10 November 2005 at 10:32 AM

Historically, the amount of RAM has been critical for Poser. It shouldn't matter for the install, but I reckon it's worth knowing how much physical RAM people have if they hit other problems.

steerpike ( ) posted Thu, 10 November 2005 at 10:35 AM

Installed to "e:poser" without any problems. However, I did a fresh, clean reinstall of Poser and SR1 as recently as last weekend. New splash screen; and I see it's now officially "e frontier Poser" - no more CuriousLabs.

Spanki ( ) posted Thu, 10 November 2005 at 10:42 AM

Same install problem here.. my Poser 6 is installed on my "m:Poser 6" and selecting that from the dialog does no good. Installation aborted. Not installed. Will wait for fix.

I do. it feels like the scale has a life of it's own now.. and I think it renders a lot slower all of a sudden.

I had the problem where it would not install. I figured that for me it was a WINDOWS registry thing (No you dont need to tinker with the registry-dont panic). In MY CASE, I have both Poser 5 and 6 installed on my machine and had resinstalled POSER 5 (for use with Tailor 1.5). No problems with popping in the Poser 6 CD and reinstalling. No changes (except the registry sees Poser 6 now and not 5). Ran the SR2 update. Dots and preferences are OK. Shader Spider is still functional. No problems reinstalling.

It installed without any problems here.. and it does load much faster. The render times seem faster, as well. Using XP pro, 2.5Ghz AMD chip, 2Gig ram, NVIDA card. Have to continue to wring it out, but it certainly seems like a nice improvement

Anyone able to "Open" a scene? The program simply exits when I choose that menu option. If I already have made changes to the current scene, I get the "do you want to save?" dialog first, but answering that exits the program as well.

Spanki, that sounds a bit like the old problem with an outdated graphics card driver. Can you try updating yours and see if that helps? If not, please contact e frontier technical support through http://www.e-frontier.com/go/emailtech. The users experiencing ongoing installer problems should contact tech support as well. Thanks, Uli

I fiddled around with it late last night -- rendered a couple of relatively simple scenes. No problems here. So far, so good. Sorry to see that it isn't going that way for everyone......

My graphics are up to date but it is still happening :( (amd 4800+ dual core, 4 gb ram, 2 x nvidia 7800 sli, xp pro) The only way I could get it to work was to make a totally new directory (P6) and install there, then install SR1, then move my old runtime over. The moment I install SR2 it crashes again, so I guess it is SR1 for the forseeable future :|

Uli, thanks... I can try that, but I'm confused about how that would cause the program to stop functioning. It worked fine until I installed Sr2 and now it won't open that dialog. I just re-installed Poser, and the Sr1 updates and it's still broken. My card drivers are a few revs back, but I'm reluctant to update to the very latest, as there are numerous bug reports related to those. I'll see if I can find something inbetween.

Ok, either updating the video driver or the act of rebooting afterwards seems to have solved the problem... thanks! On the installer, it looks like the new one will only work if the most recent Poser you installed on your system was P6 (and maybe P6 SR1). I had recently tried re-installing P4 to fix a problem with that, so when I tried P6 SR2, it didn't initially find my P6 (and manually pointing to it with the dialog didn;t help). Re-installing P6 SR1 let the Sr2 installation proceed.

Tried the trick of re-installing SR1 first. Apparently that installer does something to the registry which makes the SR2 installer behave properly. Tried the new version on an animation I'd just finished in previous version. Everything seems to work, and Firefly render is exactly TWICE as fast!!! Zoom! Definitely happy so far!

Lilly, if you're having installation problems, you could try going to the link above and download the clothing textures or content updater... hopefully, those are the SR1 installer files and might act to fix the problem.

WOW! NOt only did it find Poser 6 in my Metacreations Directory with the rest of my 3D software it installed it in under 30 seconds!

Lilly, if you have an actual problem with installation, please contact e frontier tech support through http://www.e-frontier.com/go/emailtech Tech support staff will work with you to resolve the issue. But I'd definitely suggest trying first. The updater works just fine for the vast majority of users. Thanks, Uli

Worked fine for me. Poser 6 is in E:/P6 on my Poser box. The installer found it no problem, installed just fine, runs with no problem.

(from Francemi) The only fix I was hoping and waiting for is the one that would make transparent or semi-transparent objects show up in the document window when I select Texture Shade but it is not there. I still have to use Cartoon with outline. ;o( ***** Francemi, have you tried opening the Render Settings and, in the Preview tab, selecting the "Limit To" radio button and entering a very low value, like 10% or less? That should make all the transparent objects show up in Texture Shaded preview mode. Not strictly speaking an update or bug-fix, just a scantily-documented feature... --BG63

Spanki ( ) posted Thu, 10 November 2005 at 4:45 PM

The updater works just fine for the vast majority of users. That should read - The updater works fine for anyone who hasn't recently installed some other version of Poser (like Poser 4, in my case and it looks like Poser 5 in Ockam's case). If you installed one of those after doing the P6 SR1 update, you'll need to re-do the SR1 update before this installer will work.

This may not help but the installation worked fine for me. I had, some time ago, removed P4 and P5 from my system (total faith in P6, man, what was I thinking?), AND had installed SR1 when that service pack came out. Found my Poser installation at C:Poser and the update went well. The software does seem to load faster but I've not tested anything else. Must say though that I never did have too many issues with the original release. The reflection issue was the only problem that kept me from completing a project. Best Wishes All, Rance

Good detective work Spanki! We did some testing and found that you're absolutely right, installing previous versions of Poser will apparently change something (registry entries?) such that the SR2 updater will not work. If anyone is still having SR2 fail, even after ensuring that they have properly pointed it to the correct Poser 6 folder, then they should re-run the SR1 updater if they have a copy. If not, they can get in touch with Tech Support here (see the link) to get things resolved, and we'll get you what you need. Regards, e frontier Technical Support

Ah so that's the reason why somebody has the problem with installing? I didn't encounter any problems, allthough my Poser installation is a little odd, I recently moved it from one HD to another, simply copied the lot from my E: to my P: (two physically different drives, not just partitions on one large HD) and that has caused the file associations to go wonky - Poser now has the little blue/white icon Windows assigns to "unknown" programs, yet it works fine. PZ3 files are also shown as unknown files (and I HAVE tried to manually associate Poser 6 with those files, it just doesn't work) The SR2 updater couldn't find Poser on its own, but once I pointed it to the place where it was, everything went fine. And I did install it by clicking the exe from within the zip. The rendering engine seems to be faster, even with IBL AO it appears to be actually better than before. To me, the startup appeared to take the same time as usual, but that is still a lot faster than Poser 5 ever was. I'm a happy camper so far :oD

The rendering engine seems to be faster, even with IBL AO it appears to be actually better than before. ...try an IBL/AO (I think it's the AO) render of a scene that has some refraction in it (could be reflection doing it, or a combination of the two). I'm not sure I tried that in Sr1, but I've had a pretty simple render going for hours now, just doing a shadow pass. When it's not rendering those parts, it moves along at a pretty good clip.

...this is the scene. Right now, the only thing in the scene is that statue on the right. The spheres have both reflection and refraction in the material. I'm currently rendering a shadow-only pass, to get the shadow for the floor around the base. It's been rendering for at least 1.5 hours so far, and hasn't got passed those spheres yet. (btw, the image shown here has had some layering work done in PSP to enhance the lighting and contrast).

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Fri, 11 November 2005 at 4:04 AM

I've always had problems with reflection/refraction in Poser 6. Not always but in some specific instances. One of them is: I have a character I made in Poser 5. I saved him. He wears glasses, and the glass there uses both reflection and refraction. And whenever Poser 6 encounters those glasses it just quits. Not that it throws an error or anything, it just doesn't get past those glasses. And I've tried leaving the render overnight more than once. It can't render it. It acts like it was a divide-by-zero or something. And heh I think I spoke too soon about the speed in SR2. Yes, apparently the render STARTS faster, but tha actual rendering seems to take just as long as usual (been trying to render a pic of Miki, with IBL AO and the Real Skin Shader for the last few hours now (and I keep cancelling it because I see something I want to change, it's not JUST Poser's fault...)

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Fri, 11 November 2005 at 4:20 AM

Mine updated without a hitch, but I have P6 installed in the default location on my main drive. And I think there have been some more memory optimizations. I just did a test render from a scene file with which I'd experimented in SR1, and SR2 rendered it without complaint, using much more aggressive render settings than previously possible (larger bucket size, lower min shading rate, higher pixel samples, etc.).

layingback ( ) posted Fri, 11 November 2005 at 10:55 AM

Haven't installed P6 SR2 yet, but had same problem way back (a P5 beta after a PP re-install IIRC). (Realised issue reading this thread yesterday, but assumed it was obvious to all - sorry!) Poser doesn't use registry entries per se (it's a Mac app), which is probably why CL overlooked them. BUT, any application with a unique file type in Windows (eg. .pz3) has an entry (or entries) in the registry for the file type. You used to be able to fix this out-of-order install problem, by simply going to Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types > and look up the various Poser file extensions - starting with .pz3 of course - and changing them until you hit the one that the installer was using. Anyway, might be worth a try - esp. by CL who'll know which one it's look for - before a full re-install - ugh! CL probably made the issue more prevalent with P6 because instead of naming a .pz3 file a "Poser file" as was always done before, they renamed it to be a "Poser6 file."

Spanki ( ) posted Fri, 11 November 2005 at 11:16 AM

Good info, LB. You'd think whoever put the installer together would know all this though :) Not that people can't make mistakes - we all do - but more in the sense that they should come up and say "oh, here's the (real)problem, it does X, so to fix it, you need to do Y". Doing a re-install of Sr1 might actually fix the problem, but it helps to identify exactly what the problem is, if for nothing else, to not repeat it in the future.

We are confident that we have found the problem in the SR2 updater, and have posted a revised version that allows you to properly locate the Poser 6 application even if the registry has been changed by the installation of an earlier Poser version. Any Poser 6/Windows user who has had difficulties with SR2 should revisit the e frontier Updates and Documentation site above and download and run this revised updater. It may still be necessary to manually locate your Poser 6 installation, but once this is done the update will proceed normally. As ever, if you have difficulties with Poser, don't hesitate to contact e frontier Technical Support. Regards, e frontier Tech Support
