THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Neverending Hot 20 Story

Anjour ( ) posted Sat, 12 November 2005 at 1:40 PM · edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 3:28 PM

Hi to everybody interested in...

Since 3 years Im member of this community and since then, I follow the hot 20 discussions here in the forum head- shaking.

Why is Renderosity not able to solve the problem?

You can recognize that there is a mismatch if you bring to mind, that just a fiew artists dominate hole categories, Hot 20, most commented, etc...
Look at "Fractal" for example.
For a beholder, this looks dubious, it has the smell of nepotism.
I point out, that no artist is target of my criticism but rather those responsible persons of Renderosity.
But its not fair to create abusive pics which come round and round, targeted on an artist. This wont change anything.
We need constructive suggestions more than SOWs.

Imho Renderosity has problems in implementation of problem solutions.

The hole discussions resulted the same....
talented, skillfull Artists, leaving the community temporarly or forever!!!

Deputizing for all artists, some names as a reminder...
Wahnfried1959, Dougocd (the man formerly known as ocddoug:-) and Madame.

Imho the problem isnt created by the spurned artists, its homemade by Renderosity.

Renderosity, do you ignore this problem?

An artist lives on comments, feedback and criticism. This community lives on interactivity. The commitment of a member is also worth an honour, please think obout.

If the last gallery is deleted, if the last contest had no participant, if the last artist is mobbed away..... you will realize bitterly, that nothing is as boring as a dead community.

My wish for the future is, that those responsible persons of Renderosity will seize the initiative in such cases and that the community wont punish an artist for something he/she/it is not responsible for. They just use a loophole which Renderosity has to fix.

just my 2 cents....

How do you think about? Any useful suggestion?

Happy render ;)

I don't blame you for what you posted, and 100% agree with you.

I for one, would never post a piece of work in the Hot20, simply because I have no time for bullshit. I mean if a floating scrotum over water, made by an amateur, can top the other works displayed there - then there's something wrong.

Such work's should not be allowed to enter, but at the end of the day, it's not the system, but rather the people who make up the community that are responsible. Such work's can ONLY appear in the Hot20 because of one thing; the community voted it there :-/

A long time ago, I accused this forum of being a clique - and hell broke out. Personally, I still stand by what I said, as only a clique of jokers could possibly put such work above others that actually deserve praise.

That said, if there's one thing I've learned around here, it's NOT to take things seriously, and laugh it off.

If you stick at what you do, you will over time, gather friend's who understand what you're at. These are the folk who will take time out to "IM" you, and support you in whatever work you are doing...

...and they are the ONLY ones that count!

Personally, I think there's really only one solution to this kind of problem; and that's to create a "serious" website run BY artists FOR artists, where such bullshit simply isn't allowed.

Yeah yeah, I know (Renderosity - the ARTIST community).

Len.

A perfect example of what you're talking about. The gallery images are not showing up right now but here's a comment I found under one of them... "It looks like again there is something wrong with Renderosity Server, some images doesn't show and they are blank, this image can't be seen it is blank but I can imagine that it is very nice work I just say EXCELLENT without seeing it!!"

If you look at the votes being cast in a satirical context to begin with, you'd understand it better. Regardless of how good or bad the current hot 20 may be, there is a historical context of clique voting getting images onto the Hot 20. Criticizing something for artistic value still lies in the eye of the beholder. Personally I think the fact that scrod made the no. 1 spot in the hot 20 is an artform in itself, not that the picture was great, but rather as a dada-ism like social commentary. Heck there's some historical artists that have said not to take the craft too seriously. Those that did usually went insane, got really drunk, or killed themselves. (Or perhaps all three.) Besides there's more important things to worry about.

When Barney went all the way to the top in Poser Hot20 noone was offended, noone was talking about amateurs or what should be allowed to be posted or how unfriendly the community is. Barney was a symbol, a satirical reaction to Hot20 content, a STATEMENT. So is (are?) this scrotum over water. A mere statement that we want to have what we want in there and we can do it if we are forced to. I do not mind artists of any caliber (I am not a Master myself). I mind such artists "friends".

Yes, Anjour, speaking of artists, the problem lies in people who praise a person and what this person does, without trying to push him/her to further develompent of his/her talent. Being a friend doesn't mean loving whatever a person does, no matter how good, wonderful, terrible or repetitive it is. Voting does not show how good a friend you are. It can only worsen the situation giving a person in question a false sense of own artistic skills.

We are not in the Mutual Admiration Society, are we?

4be (who has a lot of friends in rendo but still haven't got a single piece into any of hot20ies :( have to force my clique to vote harder :D )

My problem is that there are a few artists who dominate it with multiple pictures and there are lots of great art out there made by peoepl without the support network these peopel have that we are missing. Most people are lucky if they can make one good piece a week, so having a limit on the number of pics in the hot 20 is not beyond the abilities of rederosity. What I like about having the hot 20 is that people who might not see yoru work get a chance to see it. I rarely cruise the fantasy galleries because the the NVITWAS factor and wives and the like looking over my shoulder so often a good fantasy piece that makes the hot 20 gets seen for the first time by me there. Anyways I have made it twice and was happy I did. I don't expect every piece I make to get there and I post about once a week or so now and I work on my pics around 4 hours a day. Still working on my next post something different.

Anjour, i like what you have stated as well as the others but the blame can not just be put on one thing here. Since being a member of this community i have noticed that a few images that get into the HOT 20 do so because of one major reason. Post an image, gather all your friends from over the internet, get them to sign up and vote for it or make so many bogus accounts on here and vote for it yourself. Now i'm must say i am not stating all in the HOT 20 do that but it is a known fact that there are some that have and will continue to do so just to get some glory. On the game site i admin on we have a saying or name we call these people, B.E.Ps(Bigheaded Egotistical People). Now one solutation to the multi accounts is to code it into the site where only one account can be made from the same computer/network. Solution for the accounts just being open so they can vote for friends images, Code it into the site that no one can vote for an image unless they have been a member for a set period. Now these are just some ideas that i hope the staff/coders of R'sity May look at which can also be coded into the site without causing to much disruption to the site itself...oh believe me its not a simple task to code something in without first checking if it will cause problems elsewhere :) CD

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

Gad- it's just a contest..at the end of the day, does it put any more food on the table, make you more attractive to your preferred sex, or any richer?..;)
One thing I've come to know in my experiences with artists; both personal and online, is that they are one tempramental bunch of..;) honestly, the only time I ever check out the Hot 20 is when someone begs.
Mebbe because I do this for fun, it's not that important who gets into the Hot 20 or not. Most of the stuff I see belongs there. There are some folks here who are just very good artists, and the aesthetic sensibilities of them will give them an advantage.
Take a chill..

You don't get the choice to not allow votes. Which would be a great option. If you post an image in your gallery, then it automatically gets a vote button.

I think you missed the point Drac was making with that post. He's as anti this as you seem to be and his image was created and posted just to show the flaws in the H20. AND finally, Drac has been paid for his creations, which makes him a professional in my book.

AND finally, finally Len. You keep putting your foot in your mouth, then managing to get it out and back in people's good books through charm and basically being an OK guy and then you go and put your foot back in your mouth again. What's with that?

I would vote for a scrotum over water but only cause I have not been here in a while and that is funny. You all know I am kidding...

AgentSmith ( ) posted Sat, 12 November 2005 at 10:25 PM

Ah, we all thinks it funny, I think that's why everybody here voted for it, lol. It shows what we all know, the Hot20 isn't to be taken THAT seriously. Renderosity will better formula's for the Hot20, in the coming year. AS

Well, Hot 20 is not taken that seriously occasionaly. One of the most viewed pics on Renderosity is that stick man drawing. OTOH, it is taken seriously all the remaining time. Otherwise we wouldn't have the stickman or the scrotum, or they wouldn't have such terrific results.
