That's sort of what I thought when I first read the stuff. To me it sounded like a MMORPG in the making, but that's apparently not what it is. Someone replied to my post at RDNA asking what it is. From what I got from the reply is that it's a game, yet it's not a game, and it's played online, but not like a MMORPG. So I still have no idea. I can't see anything that clearly defines what "Aldara" is supposed to be and if it's a game, anything clear on what you are supposed to do.

Never followed along to much with it, but think it's more like a online story.. Aldara is the land, you're supposed to make up your character, bio for them, etc. Provide renders of your character, thier homeland within Aldara, that sort of thing. If I remember correctly.

Consider me insane if you wish, but is your reality any better?
Okay, I think I get it. It's not, and is not expected to be, a RPG. It is a base fantasy world, where members are charged with forwarding the storyline of the world.
Basically, the founders have created a world, and they expect that members will populate it, be it with heroes, villans, armies, monsters, and all things fantasy.
From there, members can write fiction based on the things going on around their characters in the world. For example, let's say I set up an army of orcs and took over a section of farmland. Acadia decides she doesn't like the orcs being in a neighboring area to her Queendom. She gathers her troops and sets off to come after me. Basically, she would be responsible for telling the story. I assume with its open-endedness she would automagically win, since she would be writing the story. There don't seem to be any guidelines for combat and such, as a matter of fact, there is a warning in the RDNA post that it should not involve established tactics for resolving situations, due to copyright issues.
It seems like an interesting concept, however, the extreme open-endedness is a bit much IMO. There should be something to resolve at least combat. I mean, Wizards of the Coast (D&D publishers) have released the D20 (the base resolution system for the D&D game) to the public. It is fully legal to use the system for any purpose, as long as you do not change the base ruleset. There are actual documents on www.wizards.com (Open Gaming License page) that explain what is legal and not according to the system. Many new publishers have sprung up since the relase of the system for public consumption.
In case you couldn't tell, I am a big D&D fan ;-)
It's not a game. At the very base, it's a fantasy world. Contributors take a land, or a piece of one, and write about it. If you come into contact/conflict with another writer's territory, you and the other writer decide what happens off-board, just as two contributing writers would do if writing a novel. Because that's exactly what it is. Consider it an anthology of Aldara. It has guidelines for the world, but it's up to the contributors what goes on daily within that world. And please, please, please, don't tack on the "MMORPG" word. Aldara is not this. It's fiction, it's writing and sometimes you may write with other authors.
yes, a collaboration of world building... its the continuation of a civilization that may or may not hav existed as outlined, and you get to build your own world ...politics, religion, etc etc... write the history of it..decide who populates the land and so forth. You can interact with other lands within the world of Aldara, but not absolutely necessary. It is pretty much open ended for you to decide what you want to do ... allows for many possibilites

Oh, I finally get it now. A group effort in telling a story, where each person has cart blanch with the portion they write and depict. Kind of like if we as a community had written "Lord of the Rings", with each person writing a scene or chapter and the next person picking up and carrying on. Not really my thing though. I suppose it works if everyone is on the same wave length and has a similar writing style. Thanks for explaining it. I hate being confused, lol

Ok, well it's not that either, so I have no clue what it is. All I know is if they want people to "sign up", "join", "participate" they need to explain what it is, because as it stands now, it doesn't seem that anyone other than those who started "whatever it is", knows what it is. *hope that makes sense*"It is good to see ourselves as

....shrug.... with all the ways it was explained, I really can't think of another way to explain it. It is world building eventually with interaction when and if you want it. Plan and simple. It's a place for people to build their own little fantasy world. Their own people, to write how they want them to be. It has to be open ended in a sense. Especially now as the worlds are being built with races. You can't war with a country if there isn't anyone there. It is meant to be a long term thing. As for people signing up, well, we are now creating new lands as all the others have been adopted

I got the RDNA newsletter just now and saw something about "Aldara" in there. I clicked the link and was taken to a forum and have no clue what it's about. I have no idea how, but I ended up finding this link, and after reading that and the connecting links, I still have no idea what it is."It is good to see ourselves as others see us.
