I know that Poser 4, when it was put out by MetaCreations is darn near obsolete. But it is the only version that I have on my computer. It makes me mad that no one ever creates stuff like characters, clothes and props for this version. I think that the stuff members create should be compatible with ALL versions of Poser!

if you have time to spare you can still find loads of stuff for poser 4 on the net, find yourself a good set of poser links (ie on this site) and have a look, i have downloaded loads of p4 stuff, and with a bit of experimentation almost anything poser or 3d related model etc can be made to work. good hunting!

Most of the P5 and P6 stuff can still be opened and used in P4, but will lose any features that make use of new features introduced in P5 and P6. To make everything compatible with Poser 4 would require content makers to not make use of any of the P5 and P6 features.

Actually there's not much freestuff PURELY for P5/P6. I'm on PP and there's not much stuff I can't use, except dynamic hair/outfits and shaders/procedural textures. Most of everything else works just fine.

First, there is a ton of free stuff here which is compatible with P4. Second, it's not good form to complain about the people who make stuff for the hell of it. If a free stuff creator doesn't have P4, why should they go to the trouble of making something that's exactly compatible with your version, when you can probably do it yourself easily enough? Remember, these people aren't making money from it but they are giving up their own time.

I still use P4..and I never seem to have a problem locating stuff. As others have said, pretty much everything will work, to some extent, Sure, some new features won't..but the basic models will.

If the prop is for Poser Pro Pack and you only have Poser 4 you can open the .pp2 in a text editor and at the top change the version number from 4.2 to 4.01. Then convert the png thumb to rsr with of the free converters available. You can find a lot of links to Poser 4 content here on my site.

when I make anything for poser..I try and remember to set the version number to 4,so that all can use it..but if I forget to do that,the only problems a user should have is a version number error most of the time..I have p5 but use stuff for p6 in it with no other problems. -3dz

Anything made with a newer version of Poser will give you a "newer version" error message. when that happens, click "OK" ond the item will still open in P4.

Well, no offence - but people creating freebies are under no obligation to make it compatible with anything but the version they created with. Firstly, as you mention, P4 is quite old. When I make stuff - I make it for the version I use. I am not going to but an old version just to create/release a freebie. Secondly, it's a freebie - take it or leave it. You're not even paying for it so the only "decent" thing is to thank someone for it or leave it be. Complaining about them is ungrateful, arrogant, and not likely to induce freebies from the artist again. --EK

Try searching Freestuff from "last" forward. Also there is Ghastly, Winscape 2010 and summer other older sites you can Google. I use P4 to test things I buy/download and most everything works okay but the real high end material node based stuff. I like testing in P4 because it is so fast.

Heck, you can still get stuff for Poser 3..;) I go on the presumption that unless it says 'dynamic', or P5/P6, it will work with P4 (it's what I have too..;), and there's a chance that some of that might work as well.

You're mistaken. Maybe as mentioned, the "newer version" message is throwing you but at this point, there's very little free stuff that won't work with P4. Don't forget that for static things like buildings, plants, vehicles etc., there are thousands of 3ds and obj format models out there that you can import into Poser. You may have to fiddle with the scale or the textures but they are certainly useable.

Unless it is something for the P6 figures a creator should use methods, e.g. morph injections, that work with all Poser versions. If it's stuff for P6 figures, why not taking the advantages from this programme, as the figures are only available for P6 owners.
