Subject: 3ds into poser?

elzoejam ( ) posted Fri, 25 November 2005 at 10:46 AM · edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 7:39 PM

I recently bought a set of 3ds objects that specifically said they could be used in Poser 6, but every time I import one poser freezes up. I did write to the maker and ask for suggestions, but was wondering if anyone knows what I could be doing wrong? Thanks!

Sometimes Poser had difficulty importing 3ds models (the precise format varies somnetimes, as 3ds is a kind of generic model format, and Poser can't handle all the different variations). When that happens, what I usually do is convert the model to .obj format then reimport it. You can use something like Deep Exploration to do that.

EEk! I don't want to spend $150 to use an under $15 dollar product! LOL. Is there a cheaper way, maybe ?

Some of the free modelers (like Wings or anim8tor) may be able to import a 3ds model and then re-export it as .obj.

There is an old free program called Crossroads (google for it) that should do what you want and more besides.

I could never get Crossroads to work on 3ds files. I think they've changed the format slightly since that program was last updated.

I use Accu-Trans. Free for 30 days, on the honor system.

I checked Wings and it will do the import export if Crossroads will not.

Poseray is free and will handle .3ds, .lwo (Lightwave) and .dxf for conversion to .obj. Crossroads is one I've never had much luck with and it hasn't been updated in years.
