That St. Andrew really got around. Isn't he also the patron saint of Scotland? The Union Jack is made up of 3 crosses. If I'm not mistaken its St. George, St. Andrew and St. David representing England, Scotland and Wales respectively. Seems to me Romanians are push overs. It took 3 saints to bring christianity of the UK and only one to Romania. ;-)

I think Constantine (the Emperor, not the bad movie..;) was from somewhere in the neighborhood. And it would have to be called Vlad Tsepes (spelling? I know how it sounds..;) day..;)

as a scot in scatland (the american pronunciation) thank you for remembering that it's st andrews day. Andrew became a missionary to Asia Minor, Macedonia, and southern Russia. In 70 AD he was martyred in Patras, Greece. Having many coverts, he was feared by the Roman governor who had him cruxified on an X-shaped cross known as a Saltire Cross. (One of the many Medievil customs of torture). It is this shape that is reflected in the Scottish flag. ( for culture buffs who attribute the southern "bubba or redneck" culture to early Scottish settlers, take note of the similiar designs between the Scottish flag and the Confederate flag). He was the patron saint of Greece, Russia and Of course Scotland. St. Andrew is also invoked against gout and a stiff neck,(great for bryce users) In the year 832AD, Angus mac Fergus, High King of Alba, clashed with a force of Angles and Saxons led by Athelstan. Encouraged by the appearance of a white cross of St Andrew in the blue sky. the Scots and Picts won the battle. Thereafter St Andrew became the patron of Scotland, and his cross, or saltire, the emblem of the Scottish people.
scatland? Hmm..I thought that was a jazz inflection..;)
The South is hip deep in Scots, Irish, and Scots Irish..the Stars and Bars (Confederate Battle Flag) was one of over 5 different Confederate flags (maybe if we'd agreed on something for more than a year..;), the actual Confederate battle flag is a square, not the 3x5 form factor. Don't let 'em fool ya. In fact, some of the KKK elements (the burning cross), have roots in the Highlands..alas, with corrupted meanings.

Romania is weird. Here if it's your birthday or nameday YOU pay for your friends' drinks. Yep, you heard me right. At any rate, we celebrate all the saints and stuff, and since St. Andrew afaik is the guy who brought Christianity to Romania, he's pretty big. So if there are any Andrews in the house, Happy um.. Happy Nameday. Drac (And pick up the tab, I had some of that 25 year old scotch AS hides around)
