THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Working with Bryce 5.0 and Poser6.0

kruse ( ) posted Mon, 28 November 2005 at 2:20 AM · edited Thu, 28 November 2024 at 3:56 AM

Hi all,

seems to be an old fashioned question, but do you know anything about a new Bryce Version?

We are creating a comercial comic right now. For all posings we are using Poser6 and after this transfering an *.obj for import into Bryce 5.0.

As everyboy knows, importing posermodels into a Bryce landscape is not easy, because nearly most textures must be edit in Bryce (transmaps!!!) afterwards.

Also the render-results of poser people in Bryce are very poor. Poser Firefly makes more realistic renders.

Our question:

  • How can we optimize a render, perhaps getting same
    results like in Poser6?
  • is there any tool for transporting whole textures from
    poser into Bryce?
  • What is about DAZ-Bryce 5.5? We tried an DAZ-upgrade (tool),
which makes transfering poses/textures from poser to
Bryce more easier, but this tool isn't working fine
anyway. Often we got a lot of mistakes, if we
    transfered own meshes f.e.
  • it's fresh to ask for Vue in Bryce forum, but are these
renders in better shape? Like Poser6.0 FireFly?

Have a nice day

Pleae take this as more of a comment than a criticism. If you're planning on making a commercial product, I suggest you use a higher-end commercially oriented tool like Maya. Bryce and Poser are low-end tools. IMO That being said, there are people here who are capable of obtaining great quality renders of Poser figures in Bryce. But these people are Masters who have been working on their techniques for years. And there's no question that the Firefly renderer and Poser's sophisticated lighting, coupled with its node based Materials will produce more realisting results than Bryce 5. IMHO

IMHO Bryce 5.5c (this includes DAZ/Studio) works just fine for posing Poser characters and rendering. Like all applications practise makes perfect. It all depends on what you consider to be acceptable quality in your output. I have seen 'comics' produced entirely in Poser and some excellent examples created entirely in Bryce. If you require a 'comic' type presentation Bryce will do the job but you may want to use Photoshop or PSP for your post-processing. If I were you I'd spend some time going through the Bryce Gallery to see what Bandolin means by the term 'Masters'. Here in this forum, we pride ourselves on being the most helpful group of lunatics in the universe of 3D. Your questions are welcome and we will strive to help you. However, it would be helpful to us if your were to show us an example or two of your intended work. Hope this helps Regards The Bryster

also, check the Freebies area for a utility called 'grouper'..if you don't want to use Daz Studio (which is also a free download), this will do in a pinch..;)

Upgrade to Bryce5.5 and you will get Daz Studio included with the Product and then getting your Characters into Bryce is a snap,As for animations of Poser Characters in Bryce thats on the board I am sure for future Versions of Bryce... The Excellent thing about useing Daz Studio is that it will read Poser saved scenes...So save your scene in Poser and then Import that scene into DS then click the Bryce5.5 Icon in DS and there you go your complete POser scene in Bryce... One button to save from Poser. One Button to open in DS. One button to get the scene in Bryce5.5. To easy.

Hi All,

thanks for your comments. For sure we made some experience with Bryce and Poser. This commercial comic is perhaps the beginning of a new line. Our customer knows about the low quality of Bryce and accepeted our first demos. Perhaps, if we are succesful in doing this job, we think about a new software. We like to buy expensive software just we need them.

Here are some examples of our first steps. These examples are not part of this comic, so we dare to publish it here. As we said, Poser gets good results.

thrid part....

Nice render in Poser (rough edit). Perhaps we combine Bryce landscape and Poser Firefly.

I'm assuming the first 2 are Bryce. In the 3rd lack of experience is showing here. The girl's wetsuit isn't fitted well and she is still wearing stockings/pantyhose..;-) There's also a hole in the boat - at the stern - where the water will get in....and the guy's goggle's strap is buried in his neck - could be painful. But with practise this kind of stuff is easily corrected. What Kruse needs is to hire someone like Rochr, Drac, AS, Flak etc and let them do the work! Just my suggestion - no offense!

Hi Bryster,

oh lord! As we said, this poser render is just rough edit.
Here we didn't take care for perfectly right posings. But in our comic we do ;-).
Sure the wetsuit is not fitting and the mask strap is not in the right position. This render was just added to show the difference between Poser and bryce. Not more.

And, as experienced divers for 19 years, many divers wear pantyhose under their wetsuit.

So trust me, we are little bit more experienced in this matter. We are not beginners. We also started with poser3 and Bryce3. So there is no need for us to hire anyone in doing our job.

There is only one way: The customer likes or dislike what we are doing. Doing comics is not what we have to do for our living.

Coming to an end: For us the most important answer is, there is better software like Bryce. Or, there are some tricks to get transparancy maps into Bryce. For example we had to do some postworks in Photoshop for gettig the eyes of the female diver finished (Are all white when uploading into Bryce).

A little hope we had in mind is, that someone advices us to wait, because Bryce 6 is coming out. Also we think about Bryce 5.5, because we like the idea to transfer poses in one click.

Thank's for helping

Kruse: Glad we could help. The eyes thing is easy to fix and a common problem. As for the pantyhose thing... I don't think we want to go there...LOL Good luck with your project and come back soon. I'm sure we'd all like to see what you are up to. ;-)

Here's a quick example. I set this up in about 20 minutes.

Incedentally, why do you want to use Bryce? Couldn't you do everything in Poser?

As far as one rendering engine being better than the other, or Bryce being of "low quality"; It ALL depends on the user, and how familiar they are with any one program. Meaning, to me the bottom line is; it's being able to fully understand the Material Lab of whatever program you are working with, (even if you are just working with image textures), AND Lighting. Get those two things down, and you will be far ahead in the game. *Bryce 5.5 will be able to bring in Figures from Studio extremely easy. (just a few clicks) *If you want to use just Poser, you can try out "Turbo Import" for Bryce 5, available from Daz. As far as a paying client goes, I have found that relying on a great understanding of all the little things that make textures look realistic will solve whatever problems you may have by them believing your software is not cutting it. Hi Bryster,

thank's a lot. Bandolin, as you can see, we are doing underwater stuff. We didn't found a way to make underwater landscapes in Poser. Here Bryce got some nice features for atmosphere and lights. So every 'above' the water will be done in Poser(without pantyhose and with fitting sutis ;-)).

Last comment for wearing pantyhose under (neopren)wetsuits. It's more this bulky suit. After two dives at one day, it needs a lot of efforts to get an old suit (7mm) above your legs for a third dive. An old pantyhose is just a little helper. That's all.

Have a nice day and thank's again for helping

I think some Poser folks use 'gels' (like real-world lighting systems), but I'm hardly an expert on it. they'd no better than I..

Last time I wore pantyhose was highschool football. It was made famous by 'Broadway' Joe Naimath of the NY Jets back in the '70s as a way to keep warm during cold weather play. As any woman will tell you, pantyhose do not keep you warm in winter. And wearing them on unshaven legs is very itchy.

Never blame the renderer! As Agentsmith have already pointed out here, textures and lighting are THE crucial parts of any high quality render. Bryce is very capable to achieve HQ renders, but youll need to put some effort behind the parts above. This one here for example, is a fairly quick setup with only 3 radial lights used. I wouldnt go as far as calling it high quality, but just to show what 3 tiny lights can do. :)

Hi Rochr,

meanwhile we had a couple of new renders in Bryce and we figured out, that Michael and Vickie 3 textures are okay. We have more troubles in rendering Judie P5. Here we are using a modified version at Poser's faceroom. Main trouble was to show the eyes. Directly after uploading the obj out of poser into Bryce the eyes are shown in white. After we had configured the dials at Bryce-matlab, we got better results.

sorry Bryster,

but we have to correct you. Have a look at our example.

Picture one was made by firefly Poser 5. From here we started an export. The export (*.obj) was imported into Bryce 5.

The result of the first render can be seen in picutre 2. Here the eye and the eyelash also is not correct. After we we had checked the components of Judies eye we found double imported eyeballs and pupils. This is responsible for an overlay and the white eyes.

After we had deleted these irrelevant components we modified the textures of the eyes in Bryce matlab and is shown in picture 3.

Think this is a problem of modified Poser figures (here JudieP5).

Dear Bryster, this is just a quick render. Please no anylisis about the hair and mistakes in poses ;-)

Please no anylisis about the hair and mistakes in poses ;-) OK, but #3 has no eyelashes that I can see....my point was that when transfering a poser character to bryce either the eyes were wrong or the eyelashes were wrong - in my experience. No offense intended. Just trying to help.

Hi Bryster,

have a closer look... the eyelash is still there, just a little bit more transparent and ready for postwork.

So we learned in here white eyes are not a main problem. As we mentioned we checked DAZ-people textures and there are ok.

Also no offense included. This is a good place for sharing experiences and advices, so let us share them..

Have a nice day
