Fun he is a good player. I learned how to play that song fingerstyle so it is a bit of a different tactic and to as flashy but having to keep up by plying bass at the same time on the lower strings is a pain. If you are doing that you can't do real fretboard pyrotechnics. For a more serious approach to a classical song listen to the Steve howe album he does Vivaldi's concerto in D min. Electric but the song is done as it was written with oechestra and no beatbox. The added sustain if his guitar add a bit to it. Anyways it is great to see that peopel can appreciate a musician still. I thought music was all about being pretty and dancing in step now.

I think this guy is the next Steve Vai! Ok, so it isn't note-perfect, but to sit in your room and learn all this stuff takes a something a bit special. I'd love to see his set-up. As to playing the bass line, I made something of a career out of playing rythmn with an added bass line because the band I was with att had no bass player. Worked for me and nobody complained! I have some software here that could put all that this guy has together but I've never had time to load it up. Yeh, right! like I'm as good as he is -- not! I just hope we'll find out who he is and be able to hear more of this great music!

I've also got 6 basses, 2 twelve string acoustics, 2 mandolins, 1 banjo, a dulcimer, and a small harp. And those are just the stringed instruments. I'm sure we could have a pissing match with other instruments as well. A Jembey, Various keyboards, a Tibetan singing bowl that is over 200 years old. Find someone who has one of those... oooh that is seriously cool!!!! Now some of the guitarists here have to explain me something though... these fast notes. how are those played?? I mean.. I'm pretty quick with my fingers from playing violin for 16 years, but I can most certainly not pluck a string on a guitar or a violin THAT fast. Is there a trick to this or such? btw, what is the best kind of setup to get if I want to learn the electric guitar? I've been playing on my mom's acoustic one, but I wanna learn how to play like Eddy van Halen and the guy from AC/DC and such. (ok ok I know it takes special talent to play that good but hey, I can practice and get better, and I think I can learn guitar pretty well with enough practice) I know nothign about diff types of guitars or what kinda guitar is best for that kinda stuff. Also I'm on a budget (students never have much money u know) so value for money would be important also :P oh and besides the guitar.. I prolly need sound equipment? what kind do I need?

Rayraz: AC/DC's guitarist is Alex Young. The most popular guitar in the world is the Fender Stratocastor. And on one of those links it does say what JerryC's set-up is. There are no end of set-ups to get that kind of sound and there are lots of styles, methods or 'tricks' to playing that fast. What you have to appreciate is that JerryC is NOT plucking every note. Guitars use a querky thing known as sustain - the ability of the guitar pick-ups and the strings to hold notes for a particular length of time. Your violin 'resonates', because of the acoustics inherent in the contruction of that instrument. But because an electric guitar is essentialy a solid plank of wood guitarists rely mainly on the electronics to give them that 'resona-tion' or sustain. The way a guitarist plucks a string is important too, and as different as in much the same way as pitzicato(SS) is to just bowing or tapping the strings with the bow. A straight standard pluck with a pick or plectrum will give a straight note, however, by both plucking with the pick AND the edge of the thumb at the same time that particular note will sound both the melodic AND the harmonic giving you a really high squeal from the string. JerryC uses a multitude of techniques to get the sounds he wants, emulating one of his pwersonnel favourites - Steve Vai. These range from power chords to hammering on, tapping, muffling or simply running up and down scales or bending a string. He also changes pickups, sometimes several times in one number and uses the Tremelo arm (AKA the Wammy-bar) to great effect. As you will know from violin playing, it takes practise to get this good - about ten years is the ball-park figure. When I had a band we wouldn't begin to look at another musician unless he had at least 10 years under his belt, although that 10 could have been spent in his bedroom. Alex Young (AC/DC) uses a Gibson SG. They were expensive when I had one and excellent for rock numbers. Robin Trower used a Strat as did Richy Blackmore, and Eric Clapton. Others, use Gibson Les Pauls - Slash for example (Guns & Roses) There are no-end of other makes, but like pc equipment you get what you pay for and pay what you can afford. Of course, unless you intend to play it through a pc, you need an amplifier. I use a Session, but others prefer Fender, Vox and Marshall...these vary in size from tiny bedroom practise amps to stage-thundering stadium amps that will knock you off your feet at 60 paces. Finally, between the guitar and the amp you might want to use effects pedels, foot operated devices to distort or modify the sound BEFORE it reaches the amplifier. These include CHORUS, FLANGERS, PHASE-SHIFTERs, Equalisers, Distortion and octivators, to name but a few. I got on just fine with a Flanger and Chorus (nice for giving an acoustic feel to an electric guitar) JerryC is playing the melody to a backing track and from what I could hear, his backing track contained the drums, bass guitar, keyboard and a second melody and harmony he'd probably laid down before he recorded his piece to camera. There's is some great software to do this with but it's complex and takes a lot of figuring out. Hope this helps. The Bryster

okay, wow that sounds complex lol. what kind of hardware does my computer need to be usable as amplifier? Can I just use my laptop? And does the soundcard influence the sound? Also an important detail, considering my mom is allergic to electric guitars... Is it possible to switch to play with a head set when my mom threatens to throw certain stringed electrical equipment out of the window?? LOL So, is this popular Fender Stratocastor suitable for a beginner? :)

The Dorlin/Kindersly(SS)Logic Hit Kit software I got was just 5 (down from 25) It has all you need and a Microphone to boot! I haven't actually got around to plugging my guitar into the pc sound cad yet, but maybe soon. Fender do a passable cheap version fo the Strat called a 'Squire' and practise amps often have a headphone socket. But, yes! The Strat or it's baby brother the 'Telecaster' (as used by Status Quo) can be used from novice to Rock God and everyone in between. We had a TV ad over here that featured a young girl dumping her boyfriend and writing/recording her songs/music/guitar on her lapton. I'd checkout MicroSoft as it was their advert. The point being that MS Software would let you record music and produce/burn cds..... If you buy a Strat, make sure the shop does guitar setups. This requires an expert. They should be more or less able to tailor it to your needs. This goes for any guitar really but it's the better ones that benefit most...and so will you. Like violins, guitars have their own personality. No 2 play alike. Get a new one and make it your own. Hope this helps!
