Subject: Can Poser 4 files be used in Poser 6?

I'm looking to upgrade from P4 to P6. Can P4 files be used in P6? ( i.e.;characters, props,lights,faces,pz.3s, etc.) And what is the maximum render size in P6? Thanks in advance.

Short answer is Yes. Longer answer: P4 materials aren't made to take advantage of all the possibilities of the P6 material room; P4 materials often include bump maps in .bum format, which don't load correctly in the material room. Others will chime in here with more specific information. But the good news is, and what I suspect you're really asking, is there is no incompatibility between alll your P4 files and P6 (to my knowledge). Everything will load and render just fine. Then you can start tweaking the materials to take better advantage of the MUCH better options and possibilities of the P6 material room. Don't know about the max render size. Biggest I've ever rendered is 4000 x 4000. You'll probably find that Firely starts choking before you can really find the biggest render size theoretically possible.

My largest successful render in P6 (after installing SR2) was 4600x7000, but your mileage may vary, depending upon your computer system and scene complexity.

Poser 6 still has the P4 render engine built in, not that I've bothered using it. Because the preview system will show much more than in P5, you don't have to keep rendering to see the basic effect of a transmap, which the P4 render engine could do so much more quickly. Poser 5 and Poser 6 both need more RAM than Poser 4, just to run. There's been some discussion here of whether the P6 SR2 is entirely a good thing. There are specific bugs it fixes, and it seems more important for Mac users, but there are also reports of slower rendering and new bugs.

Every version of Poser is able to use scenes and items from all the previous versions. (edited for a typo)
