Subject: PLEASE READ - Is there another "shadownet" you know of?

shadownet ( ) posted Tue, 20 December 2005 at 1:51 PM · edited Thu, 23 January 2025 at 8:36 AM

Heya, I am hearing rumbles there might be someone else using shadownet as a nickname. Okay, I don't claim exclusive rights, so long as there is no confusion or me getting blamed for what they might do. I am a member here and only have a store here (and one product with Traveler at RDNA) - no place else. So anyone selling elsewhere as shadownet is not me. I am known as shadownet here and at 3dcommune, RDNA, Poser Pro, DAZ, Rendervision, and maybe a few others. But I have not posted any comments or been to any of the other forums in a long time, because I simply do not have the time to visit them. I come here because I have my store and this way I can check on IMs and such. So, any posts you see by "shadownet" some place else may very well not be by this shadownet! I also do not send out emails to people who do not know me. Nor do I spam friends. So if you are getting emails from shadownet - its not me and if it appears to be from me I want to know about it! Also if someone else is "pretending" to be me, I want to know about it. Like I said, I lay no claim to the name, and if someone else beats me to a new forum and wants to register as shadownet not much I can do about it - so long as they do not try to pass themselves off as me. So, if you know of anything I should know about, please pass it on. Thanks Happy Holidays, Rob

I know the feeling, i was informed there is someone going by the name "RawArt" on another graphics site frequented by people who also go to these forums. It sux when you dont know what people are doing with a name that relates to your personal reputation. I have had RawArt as a registered business name for over a decade, so i am not planning on changiing it ;) Rawn (RawArt) www.rawart3d.com

I'm going to guess that if you're registered at those sites as shadownet, the site registration process wouldn't allow another user to use that name (unless they hacked your password too). On the other hand, someone could use something that is extremely similar and could cause confusion.

shadownet ( ) posted Tue, 20 December 2005 at 2:46 PM

Well, when I started out I did a google search and there were no other shadownets about to be found. Since that time I see it has become the name to a spy game (hmm interesting) a spy software, and a computer company - that I know about. Now I am finding myself unable to register at some online sites (such as Turbosquid) because the name has been taken. I emailed Turbosquid twice about it hoping to get some info but never got a reply. Maybe they felt I was the imposter?

shadownet ( ) posted Tue, 20 December 2005 at 2:49 PM

X post - Hi Pablo, no not registered at some I was trying to and found someone had already registered in that name. Like I said, no biggie if it is honest but if there is any sort of underhandness going on about it I would like to know. So I figured I'd ask about and see if anyone knew of any strange "shadownet" behavior out there. I'd really hate to get blamed for something I didn't do - not when I am perfectly capable of getting myself into trouble without anyone elses help. hehe :O)

PabloS ( ) posted Tue, 20 December 2005 at 3:01 PM

LOL. Same here. I don't need any help getting into trouble although it seems I get more "assistance" than my share these days. Good luck. I hope you find no problems in your internet journeys. :-)

It's a hazard online. Anyone can grab "your" nick on any board that they like. Particularly when it's a commonly known term or name. Like when the online handle is derived from the name of an ancient Greek general/historian/philosopher.

Anyone that wants to can appropriate the name for their own use, so long as it's not on a website where you've already registered under that sobriquet.

There's not really anything that you can do about it, other than complain to the site's admins. And the average admin isn't going to bump an existing member for the sake of a new sign-up. Except perhaps in the case of inactive accounts -- where someone joined under "your" nick back in 1998, and hasn't logged back onto the site again since then. Under those circumstances, you might have a chance of obtaining the nick for yourself. But not if the name is already claimed by a currently active member.

Lots of people are named "Fred". None of them hold a copyright on the name.

Heya, Xenophonz - understood. Again, I have no problem that someone may be using the nickname shadownet. I've already said that. My concern was over bad PR I might get if someone else used the name and I got blamed for what they did.

kaveman ( ) posted Tue, 20 December 2005 at 4:03 PM

You have concerns over a nickname? have you done a search on your real name? There are at least 5 other people with my real name on the net. I guess I should track them down and stop them using my name:-) Sorry, the nets a big place and we're not as unique as we think we are. Merry Christmas to all the shadownets out there.

Letterworks ( ) posted Tue, 20 December 2005 at 4:07 PM

Shadownet, I know how you feel. I use "shadowrider" everywhere but here (long story, I didn't know about Traveller when I registered here and went with another name after I learned about him, didn't want him blamed for my poor art..), including my email, since I switched to Verizon about 6 years ago. Lately I've been getting emails from a "shadowrider_00#" on yahoo, mostly spam selling juke. Problem is to change nicks now would be a horrible chore... mike

shadownet ( ) posted Tue, 20 December 2005 at 4:21 PM

Well it was a pretty good run for me if there is another artist out there calling him or herself shadownet. I've had the nick a long time, going back to long before this site was around and Poser was still Metacreation and DAZ was still calling its Poser stuff Zygote stuff. There was a Poser download page where the likes of Nerd, Bushi, PhilC, Traveler, Bloodsong, and some of the now sadly lesser know giants of Poser shared their work with other enthusists. Then things started changing as the Poser forum of the time went through changes. There was Willow, and Jack, and finally bondware with Renderosity as it stands now. I suppose I sort of miss the old days, and how tightly knit the Poser community was back then. Pardon an old dog for a brief trip down memory lane. :O)

XENOPHONZ ( ) posted Tue, 20 December 2005 at 5:20 PM

There are many names that I used to see around here all of the time......some of them now post a lot less often than they used to -- while others have disappeared from Poserdom entirely.

A few individuals have become regulars on other boards. Some of them left in anger -- some probably simply lost interest. Some -- sad to say -- have passed on.

It's the nature of boards like this one. It's a transitory business.

Others are actually still hanging around here with us, but they've shifted into full-time lurker status. In fact, I think that we'd all be amazed to find out just how many regular forum readers never post a thing.........

But 1000's of new members have signed up to fill in the gap. In fact, the new members have done more than simply fill it. The ACTIVE membership of this website keeps getting bigger and bigger all of the time.

True true. And just think, this time next year or the year after, will look back on today and feel nostalgic. Ain't it always the way. :O)

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Tue, 20 December 2005 at 5:57 PM

Heh I know what you mean. There's a "TrekkieGal" posting pics on bot Rotica and RM, and it's terribly confusing because at a glance, the names look similar. Of course, TrekkieGal and TrekkieGrrrl ISN'T the same nick, and I can't (and won't) do anything about it, for all I know, the TrekkieGal peep might have had the name longer than me? Still. It's definately NOT the same as Fred. Nicknames aren't the same as your RL name. OF COURSE there's a lot of people with the same name as you IRL, I know several people with the same name as myself. But a nickname is something you've made yourself. In many ways it's far more personal. And therefore it's a bit.. I dunno... intruding.... to "steal" someone's webname. Oh and I wish I'd used TrekkieGrrrl when I first registred here, instead of Ern Yoak.. Oh well... too late to change now. BTW. TrekkieGrrrl here IS taken. So don't bother LOL

Hmm, maybe I can change mine to TrekkieGrrrlfan#1 - I do have an aweful lot of your free stuff. hehe

XENOPHONZ ( ) posted Tue, 20 December 2005 at 7:15 PM

Well, IMO it's a bit rude to come to a new board and register as shadow_net, or Trekkie-Grrrl -- or for that matter XENOPHONZZ. Technically allowable, I suppose. But rude. And it's sometimes done for attack purposes -- which has lead to a few bannings in the past.

Then again, I've seen it done once or twice.

As for Fred, I haven't bothered to look at the rolls. Perhaps it's open. If not, then Fred_ might do.

Hmm, Derf has a nice ring to it as well. I think I'll be Derf. I wonder if derf means something inappropriate in some language I don't speak. Could you imagine calling yourself derf only to find out later in Swahili it means south end of north bound zebra? :O)

ynsaen ( ) posted Tue, 20 December 2005 at 7:28 PM

I have a couple of "spare" nicks I use. I've only come across two other ynsaens in the last 20 some odd years, and I'm the only girl I've met using it, lol. but, nevertheless, I do come across them. One of my spare nicks, however, isn't, um, php friendly, so doesn't get used often (it has an apostrophe in the name, which php stuff dislikes) Rob, if it's some place near and dear to my heart, let me know, and I'll make a fix.

Then there's 'Phred.' Strange...I always wanted to use 'Bob' as a nic. But every time I've tried registering with it, I've been told it was taken. Yet I've never seen a post from Bob. He must be the quiet type: he's registered everywhere but never posts. BTW: My real name is not Bob Jackson. And I don't know any Bob Jacksons. Come to think of it, I've never even heard of Bob Jackson. Sincerely, Ed

ROFL - for some reason that made me think of the ol Bob Newheart show, with Darryl and his brother Darryl (sp?) @ynsaen, no worries while I haven't been around to visit in a while, tis I. :O) Well no one seems to know any other shadownets - or if they do, they are not fessing up. Again, I'm not on some vendetta. I do not care if someone else decided shadownet was a cool nickname and adopted, so long as they were not setting out to try to do something in the way of bad things to me. Just wanted to clear the air though in case there was any confusion as to this shadownet and any others who might be out there. Also, its been really nice to just kick back and chat with friends. Haven't be able to do that here in a long time cause I've just not had the time. But today I actually did nothing but goof off. Well, almost anyhow. And it was fun to hang out with you folks! Maybe that is why I was feeling so nostagic about the old Poser days, I had more time to play back then. Happy Holidays to you all.

I believe it was Larry who had the two Daryl brothers. ("Hi, I'm Larry. This is my brother Daryl and this is my other brother Daryl.")

And a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and all!

BTW: I don't know how to spell 'Daryl' either

I thought it was Darryl & Darrell Many moons ago when I moved I had my innernet service terminated. In the 2 days it took to get re-connected by the same company in a new town, some a-hole hooked my nickname so I needed a new email addy. I was choked. Went to a new ISP & got FreeBass back.

My real name is not Bob Jackson. And I don't know any Bob Jacksons. Come to think of it, I've never even heard of Bob Jackson.

Believe it or not - Bob Jackson was the name of a long-retired top executive of a company that I used to work for. Seriously. He smoked big cigars.

I suppose that he's off somewhere enjoying his retirement these days. He had the money to do it.....and then some.

Uh......are you sure that your name isn't 'Bob Jackson'........?

Have there ever been some changes since then - not too sure they have all been for the better. Like you I miss the closeness that community had and the true sharing attitude it had... I don't think that the Calvin Klein brand is quite as trays chick (tr chic) as it used to be back in Michael J. Fox's heyday. Although it's straining to be. Oh, well.......at least he wasn't accused of being named "Fruit of the Loom". "Hanes" might not have been too bad, though.
