Tjohn said it better with "ragging on an app" than Quest's "spewing venom etc" but whatever you call it, for the question that was asked, everyone made valid points and picking on other peoples points with the cut and paste approach was a tad offensive and now I'm going to do it: "Sorry but yeah...when somone makes claims, and don't have the balls to back them up, then I can only assume they are a child." this statement is even more offensive, not because the person in question is older than most here, but because most of the young people here are extremely knowledgable, to name just a few, Mrdodobird, Madmax, Rayraz. They are all very young and talented and it is an insult to think that just because you disagree with someone and they aren't debating in a manner in which you feel is correct, that they must be young. And what really amuses me, is that you and Quest seem to both be saying the same thing, but that whole male aggression thing is getting in the way, lol. Oh oops, I just made an assumption that you are both male, based soley on the type of exchange you had. my bad.
ah, I am to lazy to read the whole thread, even more so 'cause I'm assuming there's been some conflict in here (considering the length of the thread and some words I pick up randomly here and there during scrolling) so maybe I'm saying something that's already been said or such but here's my quick situation scetch about bryce and holywood: Important factors: - Nice bryce graphics = possible. - Nice bryce graphics cost: lotsa time. - Hollywood and nice computergraphics = match made in heaven. - Hollywood = Making lotsa money. - Time = Cash. - Big movie style graphics = super-duper-mega-3d-top-of-the-line-graphics. - Bryce development = painfully slow. - Top of the line graphics development = very fast. Resulting equation: - Bryce/"super-duper-mega-3d-top-of-the-line-graphics" = inconceivable amounts of time. - inconcievable amount of time * cash = ultrahigh cost - Painfully slow bryce development + fast development of leading packages = increasing quality/efficiency gap. Resulting situation: - Ultrahigh costs + lotsa time + ingreasing quality/efficiency gap = not economical. - Not economical != money making Conclusion: Bryce != Bigmoviestyle Hollywood Graphics Keeping this in mind, u should defenitely not use bryce to launch any big hollywood plans 'cause people will not buy it. What u can do though: Use bryce for storyboard graphics or other a pitcher. AS LONG AS YOU CAN MAKE IT VERY CLEAR AND BELIEVABLE THAT YOU HAVE MORE EFFICIENT SOFTWARE TO USE FOR ANY HIGH-END GRAPHICS

Do you think Bryce could be used in a feature Hollywood presentation?
or let me rephrase, do you think you (as a Bryce user)could convince someone to use Bryce in their presentation?
As you can see the original Poster "REPHRASED" his question to the second part of that quote Quest! So no, you didn't answer his question at all, rather you hijacked the thread for an ego war with Tom.

--------------- A life?! Cool!! Where do I download one of those?---------------
I stand by what I said Renderman Showcase in the 90's was 400$ well within reach of the hobbiest. The present price is a bit more if you have to purchase maya then you really need to go without food or a car and just have programs on your computer.
The wit of a misplaced ex-patriot.

Q. Do you believe Bryce could be used in a featured film? A. Yes Q. Do you believe it would be practical to use Bryce in a featured film? A. No Q. Do you believe you could talk someone like George Lucas into using Bryce in a feature film? A. No Q. Do you believe Bryce has ever been used in a featured film? A. Yes Q. Do you believe Bryce could be used to make cornbread? A. Yes....but it might taste a little bland...like paper & ink.
Q. Do you believe Bryce could be used to make cornbread? I'd think that would depend on how hard you push on the CD to crush the corn.

I don't know if corny would be the right word, but I do know that the illusion that bryce can compete with programs such as c4d, 3dsmax, lightwave, maya, softimageXSI, Zbrush etc is getting a little old ;-)

"But despite its shortcomings it has been done and has made its mark." On PBS? Hardly Hollywood. "Ive only partially seen Planetary Traveler (1997) and it was exclusively done using only Bryce (I liked it). Never saw Infinitys Child but understand it didnt rate very high with movie critics." Partially seen? Let me guess...you got totally bored halfway through it? Okay...someone had to say it. I'm as big a fan of Bryce as there is, but Planetary Traveler and Infinitys Child were yawn fests. Just because you or I couldn't do as well, doesnt mean we can not have our opinions of it. I don't play piano, so does that mean I'm not allowed to say what piano music I like or dislike? That's like saying that because someone doesn't have a gallery, they have no right to critique. Tom

I ahven't seen infinity's child, did see a trailer of planetary traveler though. Either way: "1997" back in 97 bryce was less behind on industry standard then now ;) If the movies weren't good enough to make a hollywood hit then, then a bryce movie surely wouldn't be good enough for a hollywood hit now.

convince someone to use Bryce in their presentation?
Obviously, someone was convinced that it could be done and went ahead and did it:
Planetary Traveler is the brainchild of two-time Emmy award winning director/producer Jan C. Nickman, noted for such projects as the computer animated hit The Minds Eye. The brilliant original music score was created by Grammy nominated composer Paul Haslinger.
Two years in the making with some of the worlds top digital artists. Planetary Traveler is the first full length program ever produced entirely on desktop computers.
I'm sorry but in this industry, time is money, it simply isn't practical for a studio to use software that takes so long to render.
to prove that a Mac is capable of climbing the graphic heights once thought to be the domain of Silicon Graphics machines.
With "Planetary Traveler," Jan Nickman, president of Seattle-based Third Planet Entertainment, has done just that. The 40-minute animated exploration of alien worlds, as seen from space probes traveling across eight planets, is the first animated movie to be designed, scored and rendered entirely on a Mac.
he wondered if desktop computers were capable of producing the images he needed. Since the budget for this film was coming out of his pocket, money was also a consideration. When Nickman saw an advertisement for MetaCreations Corp.'s Bryce software that showed an ice-covered alien landscape, he realized the concept was viable.
The project team grew to include Rodney L'Ongnion, a highly skilled Bryce user and owner of 4U2C, a Hollywood-based video production company.
the most efficient way to render the images would be by creating a network of 10 Mac OS machines divided between Carpinteria, Calif., and L'Ongnion's home in Glendale, Calif. The network mixed Power Mac 7500s and 8500s and Power Computing Corp. clones, all running the PowerPC 601 chip at speeds between 120 and 180 MHz. Depending on the complexity of the image, each frame took 20 to 40 minutes to render, with frames from the "Plasma Storm" sequence taking a whopping nine hours each because of the vaporlike effects of the graphics.
Partially seen? Let me guess...you got totally bored halfway through it?
Okay...someone had to say it.

Just because you or I couldn't do as well, doesnt mean we can not have our opinions of it.
Yes, partially, only caught the tail end on both occasions while channel surfing and I liked what a saw of it. I even considered buying a copy, I have a small collection of computer graphic animation documenting its digital development through the early years and thought that as such, Bryce has certainly earned its place there.
Sorry to disappoint you but no one here asked for your opinion on the movies! You make it quite clear that you didnt like either of the Bryce productions but that doesnt mean that others couldnt have different opinions.
As I stated above: Obviously by todays standards Bryce can hardly compare to the higher end, more expensive graphic packages particularly in the department of speed but despite its shortcomings it has been done and has made its mark.
For reasons of cost, learning curve, and time investment, I can use Bryce. I cannot use neither Vue5 Infinite (which costs 3 times as much) nor the propietary software used by the likes of Pixar (which costs 300 times as much). What others can do has no bearing on what I can do, or what I enjoy.
I could make a full length animation with Bryce. Have I? no. Will I? Probably not.
Never-the-less. Because I can use Bryce, Bryce wins.
"Sorry to disappoint you but no one here asked for your opinion on the movies!' Show me where someone asked "your" opinion. You ASSumed my opinion of them before I ever said anything about if I liked them or not. "The halfwit above hated the two movies sited so much that he went out and bought them both" Ya see? You ASSumed my opinion. Hopefully Santa brought you some reading glasses today, because you obviously can not read or comprehend a simple thread. Happy Yule Tom

Bryce's reflections are fascinating! There is no good reason to expect someone wouldn't do a movie with this soon. Just don't be thinking of doing it with the Dell Dimension your grandmother gave you for Christmas. If you look around for a thread on Global Illumination(With mirrored Balls in HRDI) you will see a post which figures how long it would take an everyday computer to render that scene, at a Hollywood Film Resolution, for a 2 hr. movie. The answer is something like 240,000,000 years! LOL!
