Subject: WTF?

bonestructure ( ) posted Sun, 01 January 2006 at 6:03 AM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 3:58 PM

Wanted to download some free stuff, but when i clicked on the download button and went to save the file, all I got was something called artistdownload.ez. On EVERY file. What the hell?

Can you try logging out, flushing cache and cookies, then log back in and try again? I am downloading freestuff without problems here.

didn't help. Perhaps it's now netscape unfriendly?

Don't have Netscape, sorry, I'm on Firefox. Can you try with another browser?

try renaming .ez to .zip and see if that helps

pearce ( ) posted Sun, 01 January 2006 at 12:05 PM

Isn't Firefox based on Netscape coding?

hewee ( ) posted Sun, 01 January 2006 at 8:01 PM

I get .ez and some other names that are on some downloads. But you should see the filename.zip.ez so just rename buy deleting the .ez and you have it work ok. Yep I use netscape. :)

Bone your on a PC right? I've seen this come up on a Mac... Actually now that I think about it..it's come up when a member on a Mac has uploaded a file too.. Ok..before anyone gets upset...I'm not being anti Mac... just recalling what I've experienced here.. :-)

A Mac upload is why we see the other .exe added to the downloads? I always wonder what is going on and why I see more of it then the pass. But with more Mac's you get more uploads. I have seen .php added to the file names too and another but I can't think of it right now.

bonestructure ( ) posted Sun, 01 January 2006 at 11:51 PM

well, renaming the file works, but that's not a very good system

it's a common error, actually caused by windows trying to be helpfull. it's the save as taking the extention of the webpage and tacking it onto the file. doung a mouseover on the download butting you can see if it's a file or website link. when it's a file link right click and save link target as, then change the filetype in the dialog. no more screwy extentions.

pauljs75 ( ) posted Tue, 03 January 2006 at 10:31 PM

Sometimes people do screwy things to extensions because of limitations set up by hosting sites. Usually they'll say something in the notes about changing it. Also some .exe's are self extracting zips. To be on the safe side, you should check with a zip extractor program. And on the topic of Macs, .sit is another file format popular with them.

No netscape and firefox are Mozilla codebase

Jaqui ( ) posted Fri, 06 January 2006 at 4:00 AM

and half of the Mozilla codebase is proprietary Netscape code stil. both sets of browsers are based on the Gecko rendering engine. some of firefox's code is not open source. ( go grab the source for it and you can easily verify my comment. )

bonestructure ( ) posted Fri, 06 January 2006 at 7:11 AM

I use netscape and the mozilla browser, rarely, if ever, do I use IE. Usually onlt to check if my html code works in it.

Jaqui ( ) posted Fri, 06 January 2006 at 11:59 AM

but it's windows itself doing it not the browser. that's why the file extentions are getting screwed.
