I've seen plenty of these things but didn't know what they were called.

History. The Jesus Fish symbol goes back to very early Christian times. I gather that it's from the Koine Greek word for "fish" and what they can be the initial letters of. The transliteration in "icthyos" and there was no "j" in those days, so it began "iesus christos". So a fish symbol was a sort of secret sign for early Christians. Poser You could do this with a Poser displacement map. and use the displacement map to control blender nodes for colour, reflection, etc. You can use the UV scale and offset settings to put a detailed bitmap in a small area of UV space.
Thank you! I am very glad to have a Christian Fish symbol. I don't know what a Darwin Fish symbol means though. Care to explain?

Very interesting, the snarky tone of this whole thread; you guys should be on Letterman or Bill Maher! There are several hypotheses as to why the fish was chosen. The most probable is that it is a reference to the scripture in which Jesus miraculuously feeds 5000 people with fish and bread (Matthew 14:15-21, Luke 9:12-17, and John 6:4-13). The ichthys also may relate to Jesus as a "fisher of men," or an acronym of the Greek letters ɥɶlt;= (Iota Chi Theta Upsilon Sigma) to the statement of Christian faith "?ɖ?V ɥɜɫɖɗ?V ɶ? lt;=??V ɗ?ɜ" (Ious Christos Theou Huios St: "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior").
Addendum to AntoniaTiger's history. The fish symbol was used by the early Christians who were being persecuted and martyred. The 5 letters in the word for fish were the first letters in the words "Jesus Christ God's Son Savior" - the basic premise of Christianity. Obviously the persecuted Christians needed some means of identifying one another that was discreet (heaven or not, being fed to lions isn't an attractive pastime) so when they met they'd draw a picture of a fish in the sand to identify themselves to each other - kind of like a secret password. I don't have formal documentation on this but it is what I was taught by inside sources. I suspect the Darwin Fish symbol is basically an act of defiance/mockery against Christians for their beliefs.

Charles Darwin, the Victorian scientist who came up with the idea of evolution and natural selection. The Darwin Fish is a counter-symbol used by some in the argument between Creationism and Evolution. Personally, I think the Darwin Fish symbol is a bad idea. Christianity and Creationism are not the same thing, and so using it is a bit of an insult. Note that I have a low opinion of Creationism and the current masquerade of Intelligent Design, and if there was a clearly Creationist symbol to mock, I would be using it.
The darwin fish is, as far as I know, a parody of the Jesus fish. Even though Christianity and creationism are not inseperable,(there are both non-christian creationists and christian evolutionists) some of the more outspoken proponents of both creationism and evolution seem to think that it is. There was also an equally funny "response"which I saw on a bumper sticker, it was a Jesus fish swallowing a Darwin fish. (btw, just for the record, I am a non-christian theistic evolutionist)...

Thank you for the explanation martian_manhunter. I am Christian but being Christian doesn't mean I have to be dumb and ignorant also. So now I know what a Darwing Fish is. loll

The use of the Fish was to direct members to meetings (Head pointed towards the Meeting house for that particular night service). Often multiple fish would be left out in stalls (normally the fish pointed head up in the stalls) and sometimes they would be nailed to posts . The reason for using a Fish have been explained. The problem with the car emblem, everyone that knows what it really means keeps going to the right when they see one.
The Darwin Fish had nothing to do with the Creationist/Evolutionist Debates. It was created as a satire to the Christian version originally. I am sure there are those that use it to state their position. There is a third one. The Darwin Creature is eating a Fish. That one was also done in satire to the whole symbol thing. There is also a Christian version of the Fish eating the Evolving Fish.

The Darwin fish does predate the rancorous Creationist debate. I remember them from college (1968). I never took them as especially mean-spirited, any more than the old chant, "I don' care if it rains or freezes, long as I got my plastic Jesus." Irreverent, but not intended insult anyone. Of course, these days the distinction between "insulting" and "irreverent" has been lost.

Hi all: I'm looking for a Jesus Fish...the chrome-plated plastic kind that most highly-religious Christians stick on their cars, but in Poser/DAZ3D Format. All the files here on Renderosity come up with either a fish or Jesus On Cross. Anyone know where I can find a file? I'm not that good at making things from scratch yet...but a kick in the right direction would surely help. Thanks: Doug
