Subject: Poser downloads??????

Hi All, I am new to Poser, as well as this forum, but I simply love the program and want to buy everything I can for it! (: My problem is...even though the "zips" are supposed to go to the appropiate files, and work, THEY NEVER DO! I am having a difficult time....trying to figure out...what to put where.....etc..etc! ): I even "printed out instructions" but still, NO LUCK. I can finally see the image of the "download" in my libraries file, but then I get an "error" message, that it can not locate the file,.....when I try to put it as "create as new image"? Also, I get the message "that I need to allocate more memory to Poser". That's fine with me.........BUT.......I don't know how the heck to do it!!!! If anyone, knows anything about either of the above "questions" PLEASE HELP ME! As I said before, I love it, and have no reason to use it other than for my own amusment........but......I would like very much to know what I am doing "WRONG". Take care all, and "ANY" advice would be greatly appreciated. Genny

Welcome. The memory allocation is just a poser fluke that it does when it can't find something. Trust me on that...i have a 60 gig machine and still get that. A file labelled...obj goes into your poser geometry files...However, some people who make things for poser dictate that their files go into a file within a file. There is a thing, called a cr2 that instructs poser where to find stuff. You can open that with whatever you use as a wordprocessing program, and maybe, it will help you to see where the .obj file, and the rsr go. I'm sorry...clear as dirt tonight...my elevator has been missing floors all day!!! Poppi

Many of the older zip files still have the Metacreations folders installed. If you have the Curious Labs patch, those names will not be the same. Right-click on the zip file and unzip, then manually put files where they belong. Usually, you can just move whole folders over to wherever you have Poser installed. Props to props, hair to hair, characters to characters, you get the idea. You might also check your temp folder to see whether files got unzipped to that, and move them over.

L'ultima fòrza è nella morte.

Hi Poppi, First...I would like to thank you for taking the time to try to answer my question.......but......now......I am more confused. (: I don't use any "word processing folders" or anything of that sort.......I DON'T EVEN KNOW.......HTML! I just buy programs and stuff that I like to "Play" with. (: Poser, has become my lastest "obsession" but.....when I try to load something into it.........it always says.......I NEED TO ALLOCATE MORE MEMORY, or something to that effect. The "Dragon" that the forum sells, is one of my purchases...but it will not "LOAD"! Either my memory fails on my computer.......or it does not take??????? SO.......I don't know what is wrong? Possibly.....I don't have enough memory.......128k.......but I am not that experienced to say that I am or I AM NOT. If you have any sugestions, please don't hestitate to let me know. Yessssss.......I am stupidddddddd.......when it comes to all of the HTML, and all the other stuff.......but.......I only do this for fun.......so if I learn it or not.....will not effect anyone other than me. It will affect me only because....I would like very much, to understand, what Poser does to make it soooooooo.........COMPLICATED! Either way, I want to thank you again for your time, and take care for now. Genny

hey Genny :) well I'm another poser newbie so I'm not sure if I'm going to be any help or not. Firstly forget having to be an expert on other programs or html those things don't matter that much here. With the memory problem I would have thought 128 would have been enough and I do know there are ways to tell your computer to allocate a certain amount of memory to a certain program or function. From my knowledge this whole thing doesn't have anything whatsoever to do with the amount of space on your hard drives .. only the amount of ram your computer has and the amount of other programs running at the same time. (there's an idea to try .. make sure everything else is closed and try again) will it let you do anything with the default figures in poser? or is it just the one you bought that has the problem? Another idea would be to go back to the artist that you bought the model from and ask them if you're having problems. About the files problem I've had no end of hassles with this also. I found that it can also depend on where/who you're getting the models from that can make all the difference. eg DAZ models come complete with a really handy install script so it does everything for you. Files from http://poserworld.com/posergamers are really good in that they don't need to be put anywhere specific at all to work perfectly so you can put them wherever you want. Others come with readme files and sometimes no matter what I do they just plain won't work ...I'm hoping that with experience I'll be able to MAKE them work .. hopefully you will too :) You have to remember that it's the artist that controls where the files need to be put on your hard drive for the models to work .. and sometimes the readme files are less than helpful when it comes to that. There's nothing worse than downloading something only to find that there are files missing or unclear instructions ... if it's something from the freebies then you can try an email to the artist but if it's something you bought then definitely contact them and see if they can help you with it. Good luck :) have fun and most of all .. enjoy! g

To open a CR2 file to see where the path is for an OBJ- Use Notepad. Every version of Windows has that. If the CR2 file is too big for Notepad, it should ask for an alternative text editor. Mine asks for Wordpad. Now... OBJ files go into the Runtime/Geometries folder. This is the ONLY file that has to be precicely where it's supposed to be. It's location can be found in the CR2 file. Trust me, when you open the CR2 file, you will see the runtime:geometires: line right away. The CR2 file and SMALL rsr file must go into Librarys/characters, BUT any named folder in that sub-tree. Same for PP2 (goes in Library/props), hr2 (goes in Library/hair) and so on. Textures can just go into the Runtime/Textures folder, though myself I like to seperate and organizee what's what with them. Any more questions, just ask. We're all here to help and explain. The only dumb question is the one not asked (that doesn't include smart-assed questions L)

Let me tell you, the positioning of the various Poser files into the right directories is a source of permanent fun and has been a real pain in my @$$ for quite some time. However, heres a little story on how to find out, where some of the files go. Since you are having trouble with those stupid error messages, asking you to allocate more memory (which is utter nonsense, and should be completely ignored), you are most likely struggling with the .obj-files. To find out, where these go, do the following: 1. Open the figures .cr2-file in a text editor program, say, MS-Word (Dont forget to check "All files (.)" in the "files-of-type"-box, otherwise it wont open). I take as an example the EveV4.cr2, which I recently downloaded from Morphworld. 2. Although the .cr2-file makes quite interesting reading (better than any Steven-King horror story, really), dont attempt to read all through it. Just go 7 lines down, and you should find a statement, saying: "figureResFile:Runtime:Geometries:P4NudeWoman:EveV4.obj". That line tells you that your mesh (EveV4.obj-file) is supposed to go into the P4NudeWoman-subfolder of your Geometries-folder in Runtime. (So, the string goes like: C:wherever-Poser-isRuntimeGeometriesP4NudeWoman). 3. If you find out, by checking the sub-folders in your Geometries-folder, that the particular sub-folder doesnt exist, you must create it and place the .obj-file right in there. 4. By doing any modifications to anything here, it is VERY important to realise that small letters must be typed small and CAPITAL letters as CAPITAL, otherwise Poser is running into the woodworks again and will not be able to find, what its looking for (stupid program that). 5. Now, if you dont like your .obj-file to be where it is indicated to be in the .cr2-file (which I sometimes do not, since some of the artists have a habit of creating their own sub-folders, which, after a while, makes the Geometry-folder a real mess), you can put it somewhere else, but must then edit the .cr2-file to tell it, where the new location of the .obj-file is. But thats another story and, maybe, for a later point in time. Good luck & Happy posing D.

There's an idea for a utility... a program which takes the unzipped archive and automagically puts everything into the right folders, or the folders you specify! Mac users are familiar with MartinC's utility Macinstaller that does this for them, but looks like a version for PC users would be handy! Macinstaller will also check all the files in the Runtime folder and make sure all the internally-referenced files are in place, and ask you to find them if not. Dewo, I think some artists have their own named sub-folders because they're following Zygote's and DAZ's example. It is one way to make certain you're not stomping on someone else's file name, if yours happens to be named the same.

Mandie ( ) posted Mon, 19 March 2001 at 3:20 AM

yes please! petercat that utility sounds fantastic ... I want one!!

alcatraz ( ) posted Mon, 19 March 2001 at 3:24 AM

Do like I do use "Poser loader" a small utility that puts everything where it should go created by MAZ (Got it from the free stuff section)One thing if you used the curious lab patch change the folder name back to metacreation.I have 256 mb's of ram on a pentium3 800mhz and get the same error when poser cant find something so dont worry about that to much.

Wizzard ( ) posted Mon, 19 March 2001 at 4:50 AM

Consider the "PLease allocate more memory to Poser" to be the equivelant of the "Blue Screen Of Death GPF error" from windows. in other words.. POser doesn't know how to tell you if really messed up trying to load a "non-existant" object from teh geometries area. WIth most of the Items from teh store and especially from Anton and others, If you unzip with the folders option checked.. It'll drop all the files where they're supposed to go.. What I do... I created a directory on my drive named (appropriately enough) Unpak... when I unzip into here with folder/directories on.. it places everything where it's supposed to go complete with directory names.. then it's just a case of cut and paste into your Poser directories. tis an extra step. but it works and bypasses the Metacreations/Curious labs thing Cheers

Hi Everyone, I just want to thank all of you for trying to help me out with my Poser problem.(: I am going to print out this page and "Try" to load the characture again, using the instuctions given, then if it doesn't work, I will contact the seller and see what they say. The problem "file" is that of the dragon "Puff" that is sold under the "Poser3rdParty" section of the online store. The "Poser4" program itself, works just fine, it is only the download that won't work. I have never got the error message, or need more memory message until I tryed to use the dragon.....and I have a PentiumIII, 850mz, 128ram, and a 40gig hard-drive that isn't even half full........so I didn't know what to think? Anyway, THANK YOU ALL, it is just great that forums like this exist, and there are soooooo many nice folks out there willing to help each other!(: Take care. Genny

Okay sis, don't try to figure it all out at once. That will make you crazy. Believe me, I know. LOL! Anyways, your first problem is that you put the cr2 and it's "correct" rsr file into a Characters folder right? Then you try to load it, and it give you an error? Most times, that's because the object isn't in the right place. But here, look at this image. Check the line that gives the location of the object your figure needs. Read or copy that down, then go to Geometries, and put the object in the location it says is missing. You may have to make a new folder, or put folders inside a folder sometimes, but when you done, the location of the object should match that error message exactly. The typing is critical. Poser will give you an error if it's not upper or lower case. Hope this helps. =)

Have a look at Dan Wilmes' Cr2Edit - one of its tools checks out the CR2 and automatically installs everything in the folders where the CR2 wl "expect" to find them when you load the Poser prop and figure. Cr2Edit is not free, but it's not expensive, and no, I'm not a salesman for mr. Wilmes ;-) I just like and use the tools.

genny ( ) posted Mon, 19 March 2001 at 3:24 PM

Oh......that sounds like just what I need! (: I don't have a problem paying for it.......this thing is driving me crazy! I have been trying for hours, and still NO LUCK! Please let me know where I can purchase this wonderful program. Like I mentioned before, I am very new to Poser, and don't know all the names that may be dropped, so I don't know about Dan Wilmes, or where to find him and his Marvelous program. (: Thank you. (: Genny

the3dwizard ( ) posted Mon, 19 March 2001 at 9:00 PM

Genny one problem is that the Dragon that you buy from DAZ which PUFF is based on could be in at least two different directories depending upon when you bought it. Older versions go into a /Dragon/ direcotry. My version goes into C:Program FilesMetacreationsPoser 4RuntimeGeometriesZygoteAnimals In this directory you should find two files from DAZ3d (Zygote). A blDragon.obj and blDragon.rsr. If the obj file is not in this directory then perform a serach for blDragon. When you find the blDragon.obj file copy it into the ZygoteAnimals directory. You might have to make this directory if it doesn't exist. Now start Poser and it should work. Now there is another possible cause and that is a corrupt .rsr file. If the blDragon.obj and the blDragon.rsr is in the ZygoteAnimals direcotry and it doesn't work try this. Rename the blDragon.rsr file to blDragon.rsr.org. The start Poser 4 it will then create a new rsr file when you load the dragon. Let me know if the does or doesn't help. Thanks,
