Subject: I just got Poser6...Help! Total 3D-newbie in trouble here.

Cactuskim ( ) posted Thu, 12 January 2006 at 11:19 PM · edited Mon, 23 December 2024 at 11:11 AM

Hello, I'm a total 3D newbie. I have never used any 3D software before and I just got Poser6. I have no clue where to begin. I have read almost half the manual so far, and skimmed thru parts of the rest of it but It isn't much help. I need to find some really good basic beginners tutorials so that I can learn enough about how it works to play with it for a while. Right now, I know so little about it that I'm not even sure what questions to ask. A friend of mine told me that there are no good beginner Poser tutorials, and that I should download Daz studio's, and take their tutorials and that will teach me enough to start learning Poser. I sure hope that she is wrong, because it seems really screwy to me that I should have to learn a differant program to learn this program...Besides, I don't want to clutter up my hard drive with more software that I don't need in the long term. I also just finished downloading Vicky3 and Michael3, and I need to know how to export them and a clothing package that I bought at Daz into my poser program. BTY, I'm very experianced with using Photoshop. I don't know if any of that knoledge is relavant to using Poser, but if it is, let me know. I like to illustrate stories... both my own and my friends... and I hope that I can use Poser along with my Photoshop to expand on what I can already do with Photoshop alone. Thank you for any help that you can give me. Cactuskim

Hi anything from DAZ should be self-installing just doble clik and tell it where Poser is. You can get to the tutorials here from a link at the top of the page under the ad banner, just click on the word tutorial. Good Luck.

BEST tip it took me a year to get over.. DON'T just grab body parts and start dragging them around. Select them, and then use the dials on the right. And take your time.. there is a LOT to learn about poser, even though it appears (and basically is) easy. There's a backroom here, and over at RNDA they have some great poser basics resources. Shelve the manual, and read more here and at RNDA.. your time will be better invested.

You might also want to take a look at the poser 4 manual it's got a pretty good introduction to the pose room, the walk designer, the animation as well as the morph features. You can probably still download it from EF or find it in the P6 package. It also came with P5. Take your time, it should take a while before you get your mind around it all. It will come tho, promise. Luck Q

Important make sure you follow geeps tutoral on multiple runtimes and setting up your poser libraries as if you just download and install to the main poser runtime or downloads you will not be able to find your stuff and get frustrated with it. Check out the geeps tutoral and save yourself time, even look up runtimes on this forum arcadia has some good advice just do a serch on this forum and follow the advice given. Rowlando

Hi everybody, Thanks for the tips. I have checked out several things over the last couple of days, but I have a lot more to check out still. I was able to install the Michael3 and Vicky3 figures as well as the one clothing pack that I bought for daz, and I was trying to play with them this morning. LOL, at least now I can figure out how to change figures. I do have 2 quick questions that I hope that you can help me with. the first one is how to open a new file so that it has name a name and I get to chose the file size etc...? In photoshop, when I open a new file, it lets me chose a name, the dimentions of the file, and the resolution. with poser when I open a new file, I get James casual in an untitled file with no choice of file dimentions. how do I get around this? the other question is the clothing package that I bought from Daz is designed to go on Michael3. So this morning, I opened a new file, deleted james and opened michael instead. before posing or moving him around at all, I tried to put a pair of the pants on him, and they don't line up, and they don't seem to want to move around and line up. How do I get them to fit? From what I gather reading things, once I get them lined up on a non posed figure, I can then 'Parent' them to the body, and then they will move with the figure as I pose correct? so how to I get them on in the first place, and how do I parent them? I really appriciate your help, thank you. Cactuskim

In this specific order, load M3 and then load the pants. using the drop down menus, select he option to conform the pants, and then choose M3 from the conformation requester Basically "conforming" will make then "fit" to M3.

Hi Gareee, Thanks for the info, I will give that a try when I have some time this evening. Oh, One other Quick question; when the clothing program that I got from Daz installed, it put the clothing package into the 'figures' area of the libary... is that correct to have it there? (It did the same thing with the hair program that I bought too.) if they are in the wrong areas/files how do you move them? Thank you again for your help. :) Cactuskim

Gareee ( ) posted Sat, 14 January 2006 at 7:14 PM

Yep. That's why they use an installer.. it puts the files where they are supposed to be. "Figures" in poser "tech" does not really need to be a character.. it can be clothing, and figure, or even a vehicle. "figures" is more a tech catagory in poser then a description of what it actually is.

Hi Gareee, Thank you again so very much. I really appriciate the help. All this new technical jargon is going to take a bit of getting used to... silly me, I figured that a 'figure' was a person. ;p Cactuskim

Yeah it makes sense but then poser sometimes doesn't make much sense at all. Stick with it though. before I discovered th eposer forums, I had poser almost 2 YEARS, because I just couldn't get it. The helpful people here helped me a lot. I still owe lots of kudos to Dr. Geep, Anton, Jim Burton, Neftis, Lady LittleFox, Capsces, PhilC, Ajax, and a few others that got me over some technical humps.
