Subject: Banner Ads - What grabs you?

Acadia ( ) posted Wed, 18 January 2006 at 9:23 AM · edited Sun, 16 February 2025 at 6:54 AM

I don't block the banner ads at the top of the forum, and so many times I see a banner that I just have to click. Some examples of what makes me click a banner: 1. Eyes. If I see a banner with drop dead gorgeous eyes, I can't resist clicking the banner. Sometimes I find that the rest of the image doesn't live up to the banner render, but usually if I love the eyes of a character, I'm sold and she goes in my wish list :) While not all, most of my character addons have been purchased becauase of the eyes, or facial features. 2. Colour. I find I'm attracted to a bright mix of colours, or things that lend itself to looking "magical" and "mystical" in nature. A good example of what I refer to as colour, is the banner for Antje's sparkle pdf packages. Colourful and magical in nature. 3. Comedy. I saw a banner last year that said "Need a friend?" or something along that line, and when I clicked the banner I was presented with a package for an alien creature with one eye. I have forgotten the name of him, but he was sure cute. Because of the banner and the way it was presented, I couldn't help fall in love with the ugly little guy, LOL I didn't buy him because I wouldn't have used it, but I sure looked at the image often because it made me smile. So what in a banner will make you click it?

Nothing animated, because I block those. Too distracting, so I block animated GIFs and Flash banners on this site.

Generally, I will click on a banner if it's beautiful. Usually hoping to see the whole image.

I will also click on a banner if it shows something I need. A particular type of character, a particular type of texture, etc.

Nothing. I don't click on banner ads. I just ignore them since I find them annoying.

Its hard to tell what makes me click a banner. The overall appearence I guess. Sometimes I see a banner advertising something I would have searched for and have not because sometimes I find the search stuff annoying. However I made some very nice purchases after clicking a banner - and I found lots of stuff I did not buy for several reasons. You never can tell...

Animation - Sometimes I just can't believe how much data some people compress into thier banners, given the size restriction. Fancy Borders - I like animations that interact with thier edges, so you can't always tell where the page stops and the banner begins. BTW - How do you block banners?

get Firefox and the addon 'Adblock' lets you block the ad's here with a simple rule : http://www.renderosity.com/photos/BannerAd*.* blocks most of the ad's right off....

I just block *.gif and *.swf, because I enjoy the static banners, and only want to block the animated ones.

Though at work I block them all, because some of them look like pr0n. Wouldn't want anyone to get the wrong idea. ;-)

I block 'em all.. not cos I don't like adds, but because I dislike the sheer amount of space the adverts, forum banner, rendo logo and other crud takes up on the screen... by blocking them I don't have to start scrolling soon as I click a thread... just to see the bloody thread...

edit to add : even with all the ad's, banners etc blocked, the threads STILL start halfway down a 1280x1024 window.... such a load of wasted space...

I block them all because when I browse Renderosity at work (during my lunch hour), I don't want a co-worker wandering by and asking why I'm on a site with advertising lingerie. And, yes, I know not every banner is for lingerie, but why take the chance? --John

Realism, if the image of a character has incredible realism, Ill click it. although I wont buy it 99% of the time, I will look to see if it was postwork on the banner, or good use of lighting. most of all, simple uncluttered banners
