Subject: XFrog Plants at C3D

LordWexford ( ) posted Thu, 19 January 2006 at 12:06 AM · edited Thu, 14 November 2024 at 10:30 AM

C3D is now selling XFrog plants at $14.95 each. e.g. "European Larch. 1 adult, 1 mature, 1 young version. Please see rendered examples. Vob, xfr, billboards included. Usable by Vue 4 and up. These are not SolidGrowth species but static plant objects suitable for both regular and ecosystem use. Objects are not exportable. Zip file only. Ineligible for voucher purchase at this time.." Find them under objects / static plants. Looks like they are planning on making pretty well all of them available.

yep every single one of xfrogs plants will be available for individual purchase, was talked about in another thread here at rendr.

<< You can save a lot of money by buying the complete library collection DVDs >> True enough, but only if you actually WANT every single plant / tree in the collection!

war2 ( ) posted Thu, 19 January 2006 at 3:09 PM

amen :) its a free world and everybody gets to choose, get it all on dvd and pay for that + shipping or get individual items as esd, both obviously have their clear advantages.

Which website is C3D?

I think this is great news, and the prize is incredibly low. At Turbosquid, they sell individual Xfrog plants at 40$ a piece.

Once they get standard trees up, I'll be in bliss...and broke.

People, if you can afford XFrog 3.5, go for it and make your own trees, of course they won't look like the ones at c3d before some time, but you can make your own good looking trees with Xfrog in a decent amount of time. And get your digital camera, go out in the countryside, and shoot textures!

Will we run into the encryption BS at C3D again? What a mess that turned out to be...

bruno021 ( ) posted Fri, 20 January 2006 at 1:38 PM

Apparently, they are locked from export, so you can only use them as vob inside Vue, so I guess the answer's yes. They also come in their native xfr format, for htose who have XFrog.

R_Vargus ( ) posted Fri, 20 January 2006 at 2:32 PM

Thanks, I will opt for the complete library collection DVDs then. Less money over all and not as much hassle dealing with C3D. Thanks very much for the heads up.

iloco ( ) posted Fri, 20 January 2006 at 4:26 PM

Even if you load the xfrog plants as 3ds, obj or lw and save as a vob in Vue you will still be locked form export of the vob. So sad a company has to have total control over all models in its export ability and don't trust paying customers. :(

bruno021 ( ) posted Fri, 20 January 2006 at 4:34 PM

No, iloco, if he buys the DVD's from Greenworks, nothing will be locked. And if he owns XFrog, like I think you do, he can just load the xfr file received from C3D in XFrog and export from Xfrog in any format that suits his needs. Only the vob is locked, E-on cannot lock a format that is not theirs.

R_Vargus ( ) posted Fri, 20 January 2006 at 4:59 PM

Wheew that's good to know thanks for the input here.

dlk30341 ( ) posted Fri, 20 January 2006 at 5:02 PM

The reason they are locked is that the initial .vobs were created in Vue4...ANYTHING you converted back in Vue4 to .vob is locked >:(.....This does NOT happen in V5I. Anything you convert in V5I will be UNLOCKED(aside of C3d native items). Repeat - ANYTHING that was created using a Vue4 .vob WILL BE LOCKED FROM EXPORT. That includes 3DS/LWO/OBJ......Once converted to .vob too freakin bad no more export ability. >:(

iloco ( ) posted Fri, 20 January 2006 at 5:08 PM

bruno021 isnt that what I said in my reply. If you load an xfrog with an extension of 3ds, lw or obj and save it in Vue you can not export it back out of Vue.....:) Yes with xfrog 3.5 you can save as many formats to use in other applications. :) Yes Vue export is about as usless as .........You decide.

I have Infinite and I can assure you that you can export xfrog tree's that come on the dvd's in anyformat you choose from Infinite. And on another note e-on is not forbiding export of xfrog tree's it is greenworks that is doing that.

R_Vargus ( ) posted Sat, 21 January 2006 at 2:00 AM

The DVD seems like an excellent choice for my needs. I also enjoy the vue d esprit software as well. Thanks for the advice.

war2 ( ) posted Sat, 21 January 2006 at 5:15 AM · edited Sat, 21 January 2006 at 5:16 AM

yeah v5I can indeed export xfrog trees, the only xfrog trees that you cant export from v5I is the ones that was created by xfrog (using v4) and as mentioned the decision to lock the vobs was greenworks, not e.ons just as any broker object being locked from export is due to the content creators choice and not e.ons.

So if you own xfrog 3.5 just use the xfr file that c3d includes with your purchase and your set to go with unlocked export from within v5I aswell.

It's worth it to me to buy the DVDs. I can use the trees in Poser as well as Vue.

And I'm not sure I'll ever become a good modeller with XFrog (though I'll certainly give it a shot). Even if I do become an expert plant modeller, there's the problem of textures. Just taking photos in your backyard won't necessarily provide the quality you need to make realistic textures. And even if it does, what about plants that don't grow where you live? I want tropical plants, but I'm in upstate New York.

bruno021 ( ) posted Sun, 22 January 2006 at 3:48 AM

Absolutely right, randym, textures are a big problem, I started scanning leaves, and the result isn't pretty! This was an orange leaf, and orange leaves are very shiny, so the file that my scanner generated was full of very shiny highlights everywhere. I'll see if someone from the XFrog yahoo list can help me on this.
