I've heard so much about the problem with Pbooost locking up and you people having to restart pbooost, poser, your computer and all that. And This came to mind recently, when I stumbled over a small program called Unlocker. It's a small program that unlocks your locked files and folders. Just right click on the file/folder in question and chose "Unlocker". I had ernyoka1 check it out for me, to see if it could unlock files for pbooost. and her reaction was something along the lines of: OMG IT WORKED! So if you have problems with pbooost, then just try it out. The program is freeware, so it just doesn't get any better ;)

I must admit I didn'te really believe it when mariamus told me about it. but it works. I had become used to restarting PBoost whenever it locks up - that works in Poser 6, but right now I had Pro Pack out for testing purposes and my usual trick didn't work. Well this little gadget did! And for the record, I DO run Correct Reference on regular intervals, but occasionally, after long sessions, PBooost decides to throw a hissy fit anyway. And I can't live without my PBooost. It's the best thing since sliced bread. But this new program is the spreadable butter for the bread LOL

Thanks for the tip and I'll definately check it out. Pbooost has long been a throne in my side, but I have to use so I'll keep my fingers crossed on this.

My idea of rebooting is kicking somebody in the butt twice!

Oh, man. I don't use Pboost, but XP's habit of locking files annoys the bejeezus out of me. If this program can fix that, it will make my life a hell of a lot easier.

Cool. Thanks for the info. But I notice at the link that " Unlocker helps delete locked files with error messages". I'm guessing it doesn't delete anything in the case of Pboost? Can't tell for sure from the site.

I don't think it deletes anything. but it's apparently a french program, so it may be a language issue :o)

Er.. Remember to SAVE you Poser files before attempting to use this to switch banks. I didn't, and I just lost a huge scene - 5 people, ready to render except for one little texture I needed to add... When that proggie (at least I assume it was that, since I had just clicked Unlock) rebooted my computer... %/#%/&#;%&/"&#;%/#%&(%&(&/(##"/% RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! but when it works, it works fine...

I suspect the reason most people use this program is so they can delete locked files. I know that's what I want it for. Like, you install to a dummy runtime so you can put files where you want, then you can't delete the empty dummy runtime without rebooting. Grrr.

Glad to read that I'm not the only one experiencing the locked file problem AND not the only one who normally has to re-boot the entire system just to get back to a particular point in the work-flow.

Maybe I'm missing something, but in Poser 5 I just switch to a different runtime library, select a figure in said library (but not insert in or anything, just hilite it), then change banks, then go back to the modified runtime. no lock errors. On the other hand, i'm running win2k.

Poser 4 doesn't allow for multiple runtimes which is why many people use Pboost.

Hogwarden is working on V2.0 of PBooost which will have better support for Poser5+6.

Is there any point in using Pboost if you have P5/6? Why not just use multiple runtimes?

Mariamus ( ) posted Tue, 24 January 2006 at 6:52 AM

Well, this tip is mostly for the people who're still using P4PP for whatever purpose.

Khai ( ) posted Tue, 24 January 2006 at 7:07 AM

actually using Pbooost with P5/6 is still something to think about. you've got your seperate Runtime. good.. but you may / still need to organise it... thanks for the Tip on the unlocker :)

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Tue, 24 January 2006 at 10:59 AM

Yes, I am using PBooost still even with Poser 6. I still use my old Poser 4 runtime, saves me from installing it all over again, and in some ways, PBooost is more logical, at least to me, than separate runtimes. Furthermore it enables me to use PPP still, should I need it for something (like testing).

PBooost II does, er, will, handle locks in a more sophisticated way. But the actual locking is caused by NT-based Windows + Poser. Windows NT, 2K and XP do not allow you to delete any file that some other application already has open, or any file for which another application has a PARENT FOLDER open. Poser goes bananas when it can't find a texture - it starts at the beginning of the texture folder and proceeds to open every single folder it contains until it finds the right one, and LEAVES THEM ALL OPEN! (Well actually it does close the correct one when/if it finds it!). A tool that indiscriminately force closes any file/folder would solve the problem I guess - ideally you'd want one that would only close folders in the Poser texture folder. I'm guessing ernyoka's crash was because it closed a texture file being used in the render, so when Poser went back to it to get the full-size, unreduced texture, expecting it to be open ... One thing to remember/check though, is that any other program open in the right (wrong) part of the Poser runtime can cause problems. I can't count the number of times I've had an "unexplained" lock (a CRPro'd runtime, and Poser behaving itself) and later realized that I'd got a library folder open in Windows Explorer - or P3dO. Nobody's fault but my own. (Expect PBooost II to metaphorically wag its finger at you if you make that particular mistake ;-)
