Hey, I was browsing ken perlin's NYU page (he's the dude that invented perlin noise) and I came across this nifty cloud builder applet: http://mrl.nyu.edu/~perlin/experiments/vpuff/ Make sure to turn the textures on...very fast and nice clouds... The source code is linked from that page, anyone who knows java want to code a version that will build a cloud at 512x512 resolution on a black background for bryce purposes? Here's the main page, lots of cool stuff to play with here. http://mrl.nyu.edu/~perlin/

Wow! Unfortunately, I know Java not. But it should need a couple of things: a randomisation function (it's only one cloud all the time), an export image module and an ability to change resolution to at least 1024x1024. Not to mention a GUI. That would be a very useful app not only for Bryce but for other programs as well. Even Photoshop. And it could use the PNG format with transparency in order to avoid various copyright things. Ever thought about contacting Perlin himself? Or people at sourceforge?

I am going to meet with him soon about double-majoring in computer science, so I'll definitely ask him if he'd be willing to help me out with that. It's about time I learned Java hehehe :)

That would be seriously cool! Of course there is the freeware plug-in "Cumulus", from Flaming Pear. It was available for a short time as an exclusive from one of the glossy UK graphics mag's CD-rom cover disks. They don't offer it on their website, but AS had permission and made it available sometime back. Maybe AS still has the file available? I used it on my latest gallery pic.

Yup, I still have it available...well, I lost from my hard drive in my last PC crash, but I of course still have the magazine and its CD, I just have to get it off of there.

I'll rumage around and locate it, post up here about it again later today, for all the unaware.

Very cool Max! Would be nice to get it as standalone or as a plugin for PS and PSP. Heres a plugin for Photoshop (probably would also work in PaintShop Pro but havent tried it) that can give you hours of tweaking and funning around. The name is Cloud - Mura Meister and can be found at the link above.

Hehe...what could I get in return for rewriting it?? :) Are you wanting a version that would translate into a height map? Nevanna

No, just an alpha map, but I supposed it could be used as a height map for "3D"clouds... oh, and you'll get a cookie :)
