Hi Guys and Dolls, After all these years I'm finally thinking of branching out to get a laptop. The main programs I'll be using on the laptop are: Poser 4 and 5 Rhino 3d Corel PhotoPaint and Corel Draw 12 I have a few other apps, but these are major ones I'll be using. I'll also be sharing this laptop with my kids (on rare occasions) and they like to play games such as quake 4, sims online and a few others. I'll be getting a laptop with minimum 1 gig of ram, but I guess the question in my mind is whether to go with pentium or athlon processor? I hear of pentium centrino, Pentium M blah blah blah and it's all greek to me. If you can help point me in the right direction, that would be highly appreciated. Cheers, Davo

It is very cool - has a flipable screen - you can lay it flat and draw on it - unbelievable! They are also a Blue company - Dell is all Red. http://www.buyblue.org/

Hi Davo. I use Poser on a laptop and would say that 1 gig of ram and a big HD would be a good start. Mine has an Athlon processor and speedwise it has been comparable to a Pentium but it does run hot(good in winter, genuine pain in summer). I think the Pentium M and Centrino would give better battery life too. Finally look for a laptop with a separate video card rather than intergrated graphics and try before you buy. Some keyboards are just too small for adult male fingers!

Centrino means Pentium M + integrated wireless networking. The Pentium M processor has 2M L2 cache, which allows it to have approximately the same performance as an ordinary Pentium 4 at double the clock speed. So a Pentium M at 1.7 Ghz will perform like a Pentium 4 at 3.4 Ghz. The Pentium M series is NOT 64 bit, AFAIK. The Turion (AMD's mobile CPU) is 64 bit. And it's cheaper than the Pentium M too. Poser tends to perform better on AMD CPUs. I'd go for an AMD everytime, be it desktop or laptop. As far as laptops go, I've had good experiences with Acer. Not too expensive, reliable, and fast.

Dell XPS M170 mine came in the mail yesterday. For those that might question me, I've changed my lights to Pink. :)

I just picked up a Toshiba sattellite. It renders with P6 rather well and would be a good choice for a painting program as well. Not sure about rhino... I swear by Toshibas as my last one was bought used 5 years ago and just died. Mind you it saw some pretty heavy abuse being dropped and thrown around in my laptop backpack on the bus every day...

Don't forget ad-aware, zone alarm, etc...trust me, you'll be glad you did (had 2 grandkids get on one of the PC's, and after they were gone found 340+ 'bad items'..been there, done that..;)
Afraid all I've played with are IBM/Lefortovo..er, Lenovo's..;) They seem ok, but the system boards seem to break more often than they should.

i have a toshiba satellite 5200-902. had it now for three years. the only thing thats gone wrong with it was the built in media drive whick cost over 200 quid to replace. its 2.4 ghz with 80 gig mem and 512 ram. i also use a 200gig extermal drive. its pebtium 4, m and uses nvidia gforce fx, comes with blue tooth, wireless and a host of ither features. back then i think it was 2,300 uk pounds.now its about 2000. i know it was expensive but is the best pc i've ever owned. i use it like a desktop and leave it on 24/7 oh...and it has one of those screens that doesn't lose clarity when you move it. the difference between my screen and my partners toshiba which is a lower model is imense. something to think about if you're going to do any kind of artwork. billy :)
