I kinda like the look so far. Nice but boring, imo. It isn't strong enough to stand on its own, as just a final landscape rendering. Needs more.

Not boring, but it does need a little less mist......0.02p

It is a beautiful image but, in MHO its a little too hazy/misty. Is it possible to reduce it to the waters edge so its like a incoming rolling sea mist of sorts, that way the sunlight will still be seen on the rocks but a bit clearer if you know what i mean...........another point is scale.........is this a 'rock pools' image or a 'large rocky coastline'?........ Killer terrain work, but yeah, less mist would help. Maybe also something to show the scale you are after (a boat, plants... sea monster?). A bit of tweaking and this would make a nice tidal pool :)

What provides the lighting ? If it's natural lighting(sunlight), try disabling sunlight and go with a Zenith Hi-Res light rig. You may have to adjust the texture slightly. And lower the haze a bit, as others have said. Nice looking terrain though.

Lol...I was actually going for more mist, since I never use it, really. I'll usually throw in some volumetric spheres before I bother with the atmosphere settings in the Sky Lab. (Always) trying to break away from my old habits. This was all done with the Sky Lab. But, yeah (reverting to my usual taste), there is too much mist! ;o) And yeah, without a point of reference, there is nothing for our minds to grab onto, to tell us how big this thing is. I see it as fairly large at 200 yards across. You could jacuzzi in the pools. AS

I wish you tell us before we make you upset that your trying to get MORE mist into the scene!!!........just reverse everything we said and there you go!! ROFLMAO. Well, if its Jacuzzi weather, dont make the mist cold looking, blues/greys will always give me the shivers and remind me of someone coming along with a head in their hand!! (Film...The Fog) Perhaps a waterfall giving off a spray of cooling water.....no there's a warm feeling :) Marc

Nah, in trying to keep away from doing the same kind of settings in every scene I do, I'm trying to things differently and bring in more realistic atmospheres, and I thought I went overboard, and your opinions nailed it. AS

Well, its amazing rock and water composition and very real too, just looks like the scene in Cornwall we went to on holiday once...........Like to see it in stages to your final production. Marc

Jaymonjay ( ) posted Mon, 06 February 2006 at 8:06 PM

Interesting, AS, I saw the scene as much bigger, like a large stretch of coastline. Add a few tiny seagulls and a teensy pirate ship harbouring in one of the rocky inlets and you'd be all set. ;)

The original terrain and regular sky settings. The terrain was some mish-mash of various fractals, but the last thing was to fully drag over and use the "mounds" button. I love the way that makes the terrains look. AS

Well, (again) its an awesome terrain and would as good with the water out too. Is this still Zhann texture or one you made yourself as the yellowing looks like the moss/Lichen......great model anyway. Marc :)

what has me curious is what is casting the foreground shadow in the first image.

Pass no temptation lightly by, for one never knows when it may pass again!

marcfx ( ) posted Mon, 06 February 2006 at 8:32 PM

@Incarnadine Looks like the large rock on the bottom left of the picture.....I would also presume that the sun is low too like sunset or sunrise.......which ever way you rotate the plane :)

It's a DTE Material I had downloade from somewhere long ago, I'll try to find a name for it. "what is casting the foreground shadow in the first image" -The terrain is, the sun is at a very low angle, and there is a lot of the terrain that happens to be out of frame. Basically, to fix the look of the cutoff terrain, as seen in the 2nd pic, I duplicated the terrain twice, flipped them at their x and y and positioned them to have the terrain continue off the frame. The terrain was some mish-mash of various fractals, but the last thing was to fully drag over and use the "mounds" button. What does this mean? Could you enlighten me just a bit, I'd love to be able to do better terrains and it looks like a cool technique!
Pretty pretty please tell

PJF ( ) posted Mon, 06 February 2006 at 8:48 PM

Looks fantastic, very atmospheric (keep the mist!).

If you imagine the scale as more rock pool than rocky coastline, then the image might benefit by the addition of a lizard, or a kid 'rock pooling' or something - a focus. With that in mind I'd go with more space (misty light) at the top of the pic and less frequency on the water texure.

Ang, in the terrain editor, create any old terrain you want.

Then click and hold the button that is called "Mounds", drag it all the way over to the right. It may take a while to update, depending on how big your terrain is, I suggest at least 1024. With the terrain in the first two pics I used 2048.

Pictured here is "mounds" applied to Bryce's default terrain.

OK thats good, I understand that I think, yep ok I do. But you said your terrain was a mish-mash of various fractals. How can it be more than one? Or have a misread something? Thanks so much in advance. :)

Great image, oh poo, I was gonig to just make a neutral comment but........how I would do it, how about showing some sand as well as water? Little less mist though, hides the detail of the rocks...and you could change to angle to almost on the surface of the sand with water washing up between the rocks, some limp seagrasses or weed, smaller stones, twigs...lighter the atmosphere a little also..and the crab is a terrific idea, the weirdest looking crabs are the ghost crabs that come out at night..but that's just me

Mish-mash: In th terrain editor; Go to the tab named "pictures", then see the words "load"?, click and hold on that word, and a secret sub-menu will appear, then load "current terrain". Then go back to the Elevation tab, create another terrain, and load that into the 2nd spot under the Pictres tab. Click and drag the word "blend" to blend. Notice that the 3rd window in the Pictures tab has a little arrow under it, click that to access different ways to blend. AS

Well, for me it depends on whether this is a load of rock pools or a more distant coastline. If it's a coastline, than the mist is okay as it is, you could have a tiny plane in the distance, either flying away or towards the camera, and... say... someone very close to the camera, showing say... face and body to the waist, with one arm raised to shade her/his eyes, camera seeing part of the face and maybe a single tear tracing a path down the cheek... Or if it's rockpools, then less mist and children playing, hopping from rock to rock, fishing in pools, paddling toes, catching a crab... etc etc... Nice rocks whatever it turns out to be.
