Subject: Instant Cityscape?

Instant city?

Not really, but its amazing what image (makers) you can find online, then throw into Bryce as a terrain.

This comes from a page that is an instant dungeon maker. As in dungeons and dragons.

After inverting the image and using as a terrain, the little maze it makes kinda looked like a cityscape to me.

Obviously I would need to 2D edit this image, so I could give the buildings roofs, lol.

But, always keep your eyes open, and think in grayscale height when you see images. ;o)

Instant Dungeon Maker
Instant Maze Maker

*Both of these Makers work within your internet browser. Some of you will remember the Maze Maker, from posts in the past.

It would also seem to be fairly easy to make ruined, burned-out city scenes using this method. Very cool!

If you create a terrain and hit ALT and posterize in the terrain editor it creates a great starting block for city secenes..Just in case someone doesn't know LOL!!

That "Open GL" grabber thingy", is very intriguing, but unfortunately it doesn't also grab textures and it would probably take quite a bit of work in another app to add textures as convincing as the geometry. Here's a Bryce native attempt at city "massivity". 11 1024x1024 terrains generated from a top-view and matching altitude render(used for heightmap) of some massed city blocks I made in Wings originally.

Last night I had edited the robot entry, but forgot to click "upload" after previewing it, so that's why it hadn't taken. (staying up way too late) AS

Hi all,
Im really surprised, because I didnt expect so many reactions to my post.
Marc asked me about tutorial, but I think it is not needed, here is a lot of interesting infos: http://ogle.eyebeamresearch.org/blog

so just a few my experiences:

1., How to install is not problem, instructions at:
http://ogle.eyebeamresearch.org/readme are OK, problem is it doesnt work for many users (Google wont start). Probably because of complicated settings in config files.
Fortunatelly, some good soul posted his config file in forum at http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=533374 and it worked for me.
I hope its still there: http://rapidshare.de/files/12465613/Google_Earth.zip.html.

There are 2 files, which have to be copied into Gooogle Earth directory.

2., Start Google Earth, below main window uncheck everything except buildings and terrain. Then find some nice place with buildings, zoom it as you like and press ctrl+shift+a. It is combination chosen by author of config file, it can be changed.

3., After that you should have in Google directory file ogle.obj. It is 3D model of your Google screen. In directory called Frame_something are png images that should be texture maps for model (as I read somewhere) but I didnt tested it.

4., I imported model into Cinema 4D for small corrections.
Be aware, model is very small so it needs to be dramatically resized. I dont know how it works in other 3D applications, but in Cinema4D I have a lot of strange connections between points and polygons, so I use Optimize function for every part of model. Of course you can delete unwanted parts.

Then is model ready for use in any program that accepts obj. files.

P.S. Just now tested: I thought that only buildings can be exported, but on Grand canyon it works too, unfortunatelly mesh is in very low resolution.

Looking forward to your creations and excuse my english :)
