Subject: Unlocking a photo

goido ( ) posted Tue, 07 February 2006 at 12:12 PM ยท edited Fri, 01 November 2024 at 9:34 PM

I just bought a Rebel camera and I locked the photos to prevent accidental deleting, now in Photoshop I am unable to resave the photo with the adjustments because is locked. It says to unlock it with the properties in the Explorer window but I have not seen any unlock command anywhere. How do I unlock the photo? Thanks, Andres

Sorry, I only know how to unlock a photo on a mac. In the meantime use the save as feature. Wish i could help.

Question the question. Answer the question. Question the answer...

I wish I knew what I was gonna say :oP

Maybe if you right-click on the photo file, it will give you the option?

I'm not certain, but I think you have to unlock the images in the camera whilst still on the card

In Windows, right click on the image, choose Properties and make sure Read only is unchecked....see if that works!

Just done a quick test using Joe's method, and hey presto! It works.

Thanks guys, I managed to figured out the read only part but my problem now is that some of these images were shot as fine jpeg, once I do all my adjustments CS2 does not resave the original but rather shows a jpeg dialog with new compression settings and the option to rename the file. So I get a new compressed copy of the original. The intial shot stays as it was.

Thats good. you shouldnt re-save an original Jpeg, as every time you do that it degrades the image, as it uses compression. Always better to save your postworked images as a new file Jpeg even better as a PSD or TIFF and convert to Jpeg for web use as required.

As LostPatrol says..."you shouldnt re-save an original Jpeg, as every time you do that it degrades the image, as it uses compression." If you modify your out of the cam JPEG with image editing software, then save it again as a JPEG....even with a new file name, you will degrade your image as you are compressing an already compressed image. Each time you re-JPEG, some information is discarded. Similar to making a photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy... Precisely the reason to shoot in RAW mode as per the thread from a few days ago.....unless of course you can get your image bang on right out of the camera and don't need further processing.

Sometimes PS will randomnly tell me a photo is locked and I'll just yell at it to shut up and it cooperates!
