Subject: Help in the Hair room!

FutureFantasyDesign ( ) posted Thu, 09 February 2006 at 11:14 PM · edited Mon, 10 February 2025 at 9:27 AM

I have two books, Poser 6 Revealed, and the Reference Manual that came with P6. I cannot understand the verbage of either! I need to learn to do Hair cause most Preset and morphing hair is too unrully for my needs. Or boring. Can someone who is good at hair give some simply worded help to me? I don't understand what is needed to start, I thought it was a skull cap but apparently I am wrong. I do some nice post production hair but som guides would improve that immensly too! ThanX!!! suggestion, take it or leave it:

small steps, from the simple on out.

work with James, not casual james.

with James in default position, apply some dynamic hair, like James_Layer or James_Messy.

the hair should pop into the correct place.

do not do any animation. do not change the pose. render immediately with firefly.

your pixel samples should be set to at least 3, and the min shading rate to, say, 1.0 for now.

BE SURE THERE ARE NO RAYTRACE SHADOW LIGHTS, that Raytrace is off in render settings, that you have no IBL lights and certainly no AO selected.

do you like the results? (you are using all defaults, how do they look as a start, in other words.)

Post an image, please, if you can.

If you are going to try making your own hair in the Hair room, I hope you have a very very very powerful computer. It takes a huge amount of resources to work in that room. Have you tried Dynamic Hair? You might want to have a look in your Poser 6 runtime in the Jessie Hair folder to see what hair in the hair room tends to look like. It's called "strand based".

I think strand based hair looks much better than prop hair if it's done right. As for making my own dynamic hair styles from scratch, that's a whole other can o worms I don't wanna touch yet.

Hi everyone>You are great to respond so quickly. Here is my delima. I have several "Bought" hairs>Liltsure, Sherry, and a few others. They don't always work well?! My Liltsure has patchy head hair in the crown area sort of looks like this ^^^^^^^ instead of laying smoothly. My Sherry hair is not a perfect fit on Aiko? and I have the Sherlie body, little Goth character. Problem I like exotic looks, like SciFi and/or Goth, or Barbaric. So before I buy more hair that doesn't exactly do what I want it too, I thought maybe I can fix it in the hair room?! My puter is a work horse with 4 G memory and one of the faster chips (*P4 and extra front side bus, etc). So I think the puter might be ok. ANY suggestions for a good hair that really is realistic? Without breaking the bank? LOL!!! I need to do several looks from my stuff. Or am I doing it wrong? Could be operator error! Wouldn't be the first time! That's why I learned to do hair in post production. But I am lazy and if it works in P6 I am all for it!!! Is there a difference between Dynamic and Morphing? Aren't they the same? I sort of thought that my Liltsure was a just apply and go sort of hair, WRONG! I have to fight it the whole way! I actually made up several "pieces" of Liltsure and saved as .png's to fill in problem spots! All help is so appreciated!!! CM here's an example of what I mean about the hair at the crown

HAIR 101 There is prop hair. Then there is dynamic hair. They are completely different. You can't fix prop hair in the hair room, and dynamic hair has no morphs, it can only be attacked in the hair room (aside from translation x/y/z and scale) So, to make this easier, pick 1 hair, the one you feel best about, and work with it until you understand it. So, if you wish, please pick your hair and report if it is dynamic or not. Also report what character model you are working with. Thanks.

Hello0 Operaguy! I have a slight probl;em with the Firefly render>it is checked on the Shadows and I can't get it to uncheck. I am not sure about messing with those settings so I have used Poser4 to render everything to date. Can you tell me how to set them? Cause if i delete the setting to reset it will it affect Other settings in Firefly also??? ThanX a Batch! CM See following message for screen shots!

Sorry but I am not qualified to answer any questions about rendering with Poser4Engine. I don't use it and know nothing. If you wish, I might be able to help you if you answer the last sentence in post#9 above. ::::: Opera :::::

Hi I work exclusively with V3 97% of the time. 99% of the hair I buy is for V3. Liltsure and Sherrie Hair are all Dynamic I believe? Heck I'm not sure! The reason I posted about the Firefly is that is the render you asked me to use. I seem to get great results with P4 renders, but until the post last nite i never considered if it made a difference. To change the Firefly settings, drag the black triangle between "Draft" and "Final" left or right to change (this is for "Auto Settings").

If you want more control over the settings, click on the circle next to "Manual Settings", then on the "Acquire from Auto" button that appears.

For a more detailed explaination, refer to the manual.

Liltsure and Sherrie hair are both Prop or as some say Conforming Hair. The "gaps" in Liltsure hair they do know about and said it was an option between versitility and movement against a smooth top and they went with the former. (not thier exact words) That hair I have found is best used from a slightly turned angle more then head on. Dynamic hair is more hands on and has a totally different look to it. Ill try to post some pics later on of how it looks.
