Subject: WIP-problem with lights and shadows amongst other things

i turned up global brightness to 506% in atmosphere editor on the second one and in both the sun light brightness is set to maximum (1000%) in both the sunslight radius is 1000 in, but nop matter what i do i can't make the sun and sky look really bright nor can i get ground shadows love esther ps when thats sorted i want to add a few explosions

there is a small globe in front of the camera in both pics. also i just got a terrain and stretched it long and skinny at the back of the pic - i'm sure there's a better way but the terrain editor looked too scary for me love esther

here's how a similar scene looked in vue, but i'm doing it in carrara now because it might be better for making explosions love esther

i was just thinking maybe that darker look in the first one might be okay if i light up the scenewith explosions? what do u think? how do i make explosions? love esther

If you have a "small globe" in front of the camera make sure you have "light through transparency" checked in the render room. Nice picture by the way.

okay, but there's 2 light thru transparency in render room - i'll check the second one down as the first one is already on. Have to wait until P6 finishes a dynamic calculation. don't want to push my luck Love esther

I'm making a guess but I think you have two things that are preventing light hitting the ground. 1. The sun is just a little too low. I just did some experiments and if the sun gets too close to the horizon then suddenly it doesn't cast light anymore. 2. You may need to turn off shadows on the cloud layers.

I just had a quick play in the Realistic Sky dialog and came up with thie attached pic which I think is a bit like what you're looking for.

I suppose I could put an infinite plane above the ground and put everything on that then the sun could be low but still shining. Love esther

Hi Esther! I agree with Howie, your Sun is a bit too low & the clouds (are they Volumetric?) might be the caulprits here. Otherwise, you did a good job of transfering things into Carrara. ;-) As for the Farway mountains, you could 'cheat'(Sort of) & just apply a texture to a plane & add an alpha node to it... Marcus

I made the subject stand on an infinite plain. The background mountains are a terrain object. I've attached the .car file to this reply (You'll need to rename it to SunsetTest.car)

okay- downloaded from safari just fine. NOw opened - thanks - love esther ps How do i copy my figures into it. I go to copy and paste but it never works.

Esther, Depending on how you got the figures in there I don't know if I would do copy and paste for the figure groups. That does usually work. But w/ transposer I don't know. Maybe import that downloaded scene into the existing one. You might have to change the sky.You can just save that downloaded sky as a preset also and add it. You could also reimport figures, but maybe too time consuming.

Yes, maybe it is transposer or maybe it's the fact that the pz3 is an animation. whatever, it definitely does not work to cut and paste. Anyway I brought the terrain into my scene and it looks good. Ielevated the whole works apart from the sun and that way I had a lower sun that was bright. Okay, so how do I put in some explosions? Love esther

Ha.I don't think you can cutnpaste w/ TP because it is still linked to poser. Most likely, you will want a particle emitter. Try some of the presets, but be patient. There is an explosion modifier, but I don't think it will probably do what you want.

Oh, you will probably use the surface replicator also and maybe some volumetric clouds set very thin low to the ground in the background.

LoL...it will be a learning experience I am sure. The replicator is not bad tho. I have only used a particle generator a bit myself. I know explosions require understanding particle life cycles for sure.

A little piece of advice -- "Divide and Conquer." Take each of the complex elements you are trying to integrate -- sullen sunset sky, dramatically-lit figure, explosions, and do the problem-solving and experimenting on each in a fresh scene containing just that element. When you've learned how to make an explosion you like, a ground you like, etc., THEN take that knowledge into the main document.

By the by, I like this a lot. Reminds me of some of Fred Gambino's later work. I think this has potential to be a really neat image.
