Miss Nancy ( ) posted Mon, 13 February 2006 at 7:40 PM

You do have Maconverter and Macinstaller, right? If not, go here-- http://www.soft-rabbit.com/ and DL and use them faithfully :o) Patricia

dittoGUI is helpful and works with OS X.

PCs merge folders of same name with contents of same subfolders going into right places. Macs replace folders of same name so be careful. Use ditto - it's great! It merges! Love esther

estherau makes an important point. I 'replaced' my entire Runtime by just dropping one small Runtime folder of a product into my Poser install (not a long time Mac user here). :)

Then I had a spirited conversation with some Mac users who falsely believed that this was standard behavior on other OSs. Uh, no. I am a veteran DOS, Windows, AmigaOS, Linux user and none of these behave that way by default. MacOS needs a copy with merge option for folders!

it's a sad day when Mac OS has become so dumbed down that people are afraid to drag-n-drop, as if they can no longer be expected to know what's in any of their folders or directories. however, if kaveman's app makes this less dangerous, or at least easy for switchers, then I heartily endorse it. wait a bit, now I see where the problem lies. my method of drag-n-drop always involves transferring poser files/folders from an auxiliary disk to the one with poser on it, hence I always get the warning about "an older item named "filefoldername" already exists in this location". I reckon that must be something that has escaped the vigilance of many.

Your right, fancy that OSX actually warns you that it's going to replace the file or folder, before it does it. "An item named "Runtime" already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it with the one you are moving?" In fact you have to click on the button that says "replace". I guess we missed that. dittoGUI is an OSX window to the Apple's Unix command ditto. Ditto leaves the folder structure in place and any files with unique names. It adds any Folders and Files which don't exist in the destination, and overwrites files which do. Ideal for merging in Runtimes. The best thing to do is to set up some test folders and files and experiment, before you work on your live data. I'm 80% through moving my Poser stuff onto another computer and have been using dittoGUI a lot. I think it's call "eating your own dog food"

Windows warns you also that the file/folder already exists, but it never deletes existing files/folders during replace. MacOS does not have an option like this, thus you need that extra, third-party software to do what every other OS does normally. Might you want to talk to Steve Jobs? ;P

I guess replace doesn't mean replace on Windows but this thread isn't about Windows. The Mac OS is different from Windows, I think this is a good thing. There are lots of other differences too. OSX does have this copy/merge option, it's called ditto and it's built into every Mac. My FREE 3rd party software just creates a shortcut for this option. I wrote it especially to help Poser users manage this OS difference.

Someone ( I don't who ) should write a Mac Installer program for OSX similar to MartinCs!!! I really miss not being able to use that. I can't because I can no longer install Classic or OS9 on my G4.

You mean that MacInstaller and Maconverter won't work with Poser 6?!! Oh, nooooo...! Well, that settles it, I'm going to kidnap Carrolly for a day and not let her go home until my Poser 6 is working with multiple runtimes ;o) Seriously, I don't know what other non-techie type artists do when faced with this stuff...? If I didn't have a friend who's both, I'd be sunk. I've spent all day reading tutorials on it and I'm still boggled ;oP Patricia

ditto works, but for me it's all about the need for speed. With Mac Installer, it was drag, drop, done.

kaveman ( ) posted Tue, 14 February 2006 at 5:15 PM

Poser Maconverter converts Poser 3 and 4 files to OS9. We are now at versions Poser 6 on OSX. PLEASE TAKE NOTE!!! Mac OSX Poser 5 and 6 are FULLY file compatible with the Windows versions, there is NO conversion necessary. Just unzip them and ditto the files into your Runtime. The real problem is that the creators of v3/4 content have not updated their products for Poser 5/6. Generally, it's just load the old file into Poser (ignore Mr Shruggy) and save it out again. This should give you a nice new Icon. No conversions programs. Writing a program to make a .png (P6 icon) from the .res (P4 icon) file is a lot of work, especially when we can fix it ourselves by pressing the + button.

dittoGUI is drag and drop.

One at a time.

kuroyume0161 ( ) posted Tue, 14 February 2006 at 6:12 PM

That's the problem, chud! ;) Unless you do it this way and very carefull, d-n-d will be a good way to remove those wanted Poser files... I've just downloaded your dittoGUI, kaveman. I hope that this is much better than Finder's copy and delete functionality.
