Subject: How long does it take to enter Poserworld these days?

bantha ( ) posted Fri, 17 February 2006 at 10:36 AM · edited Sat, 23 November 2024 at 5:47 PM

I do not want to hurry things, Poserworld had a bumpy time over the last time, I know. I just bought my membership some hours ago and wanted to know how long it takes until the login arrives.... any experiences? I just want to know my chances for the weekend....

Sometimes it may take them a day or two to get to you. Poserworld is, as far as I know, a tree-person operation, and the guy who normally handles the subscriptions is out sick, so the other two are filling in for him as best they can.

You'll get in a whole lot faster than you'll be able to get back out again.

I hope that you've got a high-speed connection. You've got some downloading to do.

I just got a PoserWorld subscription several days ago. The order was made in the late evening and by 10:00am the next morning I got the email with my login info. :)

Ents...they bother you at picnics right? As in "there are Ents all over the food"

bantha ( ) posted Fri, 17 February 2006 at 1:00 PM

Tolkien named his tree-people Ents. Since the Manhunter spoke of tree persons (he surely meant three persons) I tried to joke... I thought, The Lord Of The Rings would be known these days.....

Its taking a bit longer at the moment as i'm doing it myself, but its generally in the morning or early and late evening, thats GMT time though which can cause what seems like a delay coz you've ordered at tea time and i've gone to bed :o)......anyway the race is on do you get your details before you get this ebot, details where sent first ;o).......I'm off to update now, then i think i'll have a prune :o).....Steve

bantha ( ) posted Fri, 17 February 2006 at 2:06 PM

Absolutely no problem with that - just having to wait until monday, which would mean that I will have time for it on wednesday earliest would have been hard.... But Manhunter is proven wrong - Tree people would not have been that fast..... but I think we choked that joke to death already.... Thank you for your stuff for that low price. Nice of you to wait with your update until I join.... :o)

Years ago Poser World use to be free. sigh And yet another site lost in the persuit of the almighty green. lol

Just enjoying the Vue. :0)

Lyrra ( ) posted Fri, 17 February 2006 at 3:40 PM

kathym years ago poserworld had to pay for our bandwidth or die. We chose 'pay the bills'. If we were after the 'almighty green' we'd charge 30$ for each clothing set, like most other sites. If you dont feel that 30$ for access to 3000+ items is more than fair .. then thats your opinion. Lyrra

They had to start charging a subscription for PW because of the cost of bandwidth and stuff for downloading all that stuff. But still, $30 to download several hundred dollars worth of stuff isn't bad...

Yes....actually making money at anything is a great evil.

Why don't you guys just give it all away? Spend 50% of your time building excellent models to give away to the rest of us -- and then spend the other 50% of your time working at some other job in order to pay for the bandwidth costs required to give away everything for free.

Of course 50% + 50% = 100% --- so that particular arrangement doesn't allow for unimportant side issues such as eating, sleeping, and going to the bathroom. But I'm certain that all of the good folks at Poserworld will do this out of sheer altruism -- so that the rest of us can enjoy ourselves at their expense.

And don't even MENTION a dirty thing like (((profit))).......shudder. I feel unclean even whispering the word.

I've hit 999mb's and I'm not even halfway through. :) Compared to what $30 gets me here at renderosity, or over at Daz... that's not exactly a poor showing. Why don't you guys just give it all away? Spend 50% of your time building excellent models to give away to the rest of us -- and then spend the other 50% of your time working at some other job in order to pay for the bandwidth costs required to give away everything for free. Is there anyone out there who is actually able to make a full time career out of making Poser models? Is this option available to any more than the very top few modellers? At what the market will bear, can enough volume be realisticly sold?

My guess would be that you can probably count the number of people who make their entire living from creating Poser content on two hands. I suspect that 99.99% of merchants have other means of support.

But selling in the marketplace probably provides a nice side income for many of them.

To me, Poser merchants seem to come in fairly easy-to-define classes:

  1. Wannabes. Those in this category might have stars in their eyes -- but the reality is that they have a lot to learn.

  2. Dabblers. Persons who just kind of hover around the edges of Poser merchandising. Merchants in this category might even be high-end 3D professionals in real life. But due to lack of time; lack of motivation; or lack of any real interest -- they only release 1-3 Poser products for sale in their entire Marketplace career. Others might be newbie merchants who released 1 or 2 products, and who were then disappointed that they didn't get rich immediately: so they either quit or else moved on to other pursuits.

  3. Solid. Persons in this category are regular producers of decent quality products. They never quite manage to make it into the top tier of merchants -- but they are solid performers both in terms of steady sales & good products. My guess would be that they make fairly good money at the job.

  4. Shooting Star. Merchants in this class burst suddenly over the horizon, burn brightly in our skies for a few seconds (relatively speaking); causing everyone to "Ooh!" and "Ahh!" and point in amazement -- and then they fade out as quickly as they appeared on the scene in the first place.

  5. Innovators. People in this category are able to come up with something new & different. They have a unique idea that has never occured to anyone else: and they are able to successfully exploit it. Do this often enough, and they avoid the Shooting Star category; they might even move on up into the top-tier category.

  6. Directors This category represents people who are actually better suited to managing markets than they are at creating their own stuff. What editors are to writers: these people are to merchants.

  7. Niche. These types of merchants tend to want to pursue their own special interests, rather than being in the game to maximize their sales all of the way across the board. They might produce superb-quality products, but their products will tend to only appeal to others of the same passion or interest. On the other hand -- if their interests happen to coincide with the majority view -- then they might just make it into the next category:

  8. Top-tier. Here's where every Wannabe wants to be. These people can actually make a nice living off of this -- should they choose to do so. Then again, they are usually so talented that they could probably make a very good living at working for some giant company or other........but there's always something to be said for being your own boss. Most people in this category will be courted by the larger stores for exclusives. The air at this altitude is pretty thin.....so it tends to be a small population found living here. BTW - not everybody can handle the praise well.

  9. Crooks. These guys usually end up getting caught. Don't try it. It's not worth it in the long run: you'll end up paying out a lot more than you'll ever gain. Even if it doesn't cost a cent money-wise, the complete loss of reputation in the community can be worse than any purely financial loss.......not that any of these considerations have ever stopped any crooks of whatever stripe before. But it's still something to think about for anyone who is tempted by the lure of easy money.

I'm sure that other people could add their own categories to this list....I might add more if I wasn't half asleep.

Good evening.

That's what I've been banking on. I've got a DVD-R lined up for burning, and I'm probably going to give poserworld content it's own runtime. It is nice that my m3 figures no longer need to look like rejects from the village people. :)

That's what I've done. I've found that it makes it a whole lot easier to organize things.
