I did the poll. Interesting results. Seems most follow the Tolkien vision.

Yup, took the poll and seems most folks look at elves Tolkien style. Not me tho hehe

I do because my only other frame of reference for them is "Santa's Elves" with pointy hats; pointy toes with curled tips; fat/round and short.

Santa's elves aren't really elves at all - they're gnomes!

erm.. no. you see whatever I show you would be wrong. Discworld Elves project Glamour. what you see them as aint' what I would see them as. And what you see them as would be all the better to draw you closer.. so that they can play with you and those nicely sharp flint knives they have.. (ps it's from a series of books with little artwork in them as well. if you want the artwork, you have to buy the GURPS Discworld Rules or Art of the Discworld book)

well the Discworld is a series of nearly 30 books by the Author Terry Pratchett, (one of the biggest authors in the UK).

sahme you've not heard of his work. you should check it out. it's a wonderful read.

It isn't worth taking the poll, since you have completely left out the original elves! Real elves. alfar ok aesir... the elves and the gods. The elves were BEFORE the gods of Norse mythology and are higher-ranking, more powerful creatures. There are also dark elves, with several similarities to dwarves, but again, more powerful. The gods meddled in human lives occasionally (although not as much as did the Greek gods), but the elves are barely mentioned in the stories... they usually didn't even meddle in the affair of gods and giants. Tolkien was, of course, familiar with the original elves, as well as the devolved creatures of fairytales. His elves are fine enough, but rather too human in their concerns and a bit too solid. There are entire classes of mythological beings, from the radiant high elves to the farm guardians to the mischievous pixies all lumped together now into simpering butterfly-winged girl-children wearing flower pasties. bah! to quote from Puck of Pook's Hill: ********************* "'No. You talk about "the People of the Hills", but you never say "fairies",' said Una. i guess to get a true vision of elves you have to go back to the very first account of them that will be where the true vision lies everything else after that will be wrong though i still like to see them as tokien did

From what I know, Elves exist in a dozen separate mythologies.... some are pretty bad, some are helpful, and the size changes according to the particular group you're looking at, too. Personally, I like the Pictsies..... ESPECIALLY the business with the cat, in "Hatful of sky" and the sheep.... zipping along, barely moving a muscle.... I almost fell out of my chair, laughing so hard..... still laugh about it. Lou.
