Subject: OT: How did you decide on your site name?

thefixer ( ) posted Fri, 24 February 2006 at 9:46 AM ยท edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 6:39 AM

Just a bit of fun, there are some amazing names on the site and I was just wondering how people chose their names. Mine: thefixer Originally came from when I ran a 5-a-side footy tournament in work and was accused of "fixing" the winners by getting a top notch goalie for my team, hence the name "thefixer" kinda stuck. This was like 24 years ago by the way! Now your turn!

Mine was chosen for me, by someone who thinks he has a sense of humour.

mrsparky ( ) posted Fri, 24 February 2006 at 10:19 AM

Neat idea there thefixer...my turn :) My hosting company phoned and offered a free domain name and a years hosting to say sorry for doing something wrong again. Back then a domain name cost around 99 on it's own, let alone the cost of hosting. Couldn't think of a decent name then my B&W cat - sparky walked in and sat on the desk and winked. Hence the name. Sadly the little guy got run over a few years back. But a little picture of him still sits on every page.

Pinky - you left the lens cap of your mind on again.

Mine -- www.joey-aristophanes.com -- comes from a character I created over at Pan Historia: nephew of the great comic playwright, Joey is also an innovator in the theatre and has given us, among other things, the overture, the all-girl chorus line, and the intermission. Sadly, none of his innovations survived past his lifetime, but they lay the groundwork for similar work.

Well .. my hubby is a big 80's hair metal nut (lol) and one of his favorite bands is Judas Priest. One of the songs he was learning to play on guitar (which took him all of 5 minutes) is titled Living After Midnight .. and since i like giving him random grief about his music .. i told him i was going to form a band called Alive After Midnight that was going to do paradies of 80's rock songs (like insted of "breaking the law" it would be "mowin' the lawn"). I just got so attached to the name that when i decided to build a site .. it was the first thing that came to mind.

Just enjoying the Vue. :0)

Mine is a combo of kids and pets. El (for Elliot) Zoe (for Zoe lol) and Jam (for my son, James.) I still have the kid, but the animals have now departed. I am this name everywhere, pretty much. I need a newname, but I can't leave a pet out, so would it be JohnnyShatzieKiKiJackLucyNinaJames now? Sarah

When I was a kid about 8 or so me and a few girls had made a "gang" lol Of course that was before all the violence of today and we weren't told not to ;) Sooo we all had nicknames. One of the girls-chickie, is still chickie to us to this day lol. I called myself Foxy. On the net foxy is all over soo I went Fox see lady since I am now a growed up lady ;)

stewer ( ) posted Fri, 24 February 2006 at 1:52 PM

Mine's pretty boring, it's just the first three letters of my first and last name. Usually I make it even shorter, just 'stew', but that one was already taken.

DustRider ( ) posted Fri, 24 February 2006 at 2:06 PM

Mine is derived from my incurable desire to explore and roam around in the desert, and cycling down dusty two-tracks. My first choice was Desert Rat (since that's what my family thinks my nick name should be), but it was already taken.

Mine is a pet name that my wife gave me over ten years ago. I have this miserable habit of just calling her whatever comes to mind, and one of those brain farts was Yump Yump Vander Schtump (don't ask me why). So, so decided my name would be Schtump Schtump Vander Yump, and schtumpy was born.

So we're discussing site names or nicknames? or both? Mine is both. Trekkiegrrrl.dk because.. well I'm a trekkie. And I'm a girl. .dk because national domains is (or at least was) cheaper than .com domains LOL and yes, I'm from Denmark. My nickname here, Ern Yoka, is my old Star Trek name. It's supposed to resemble a bajoran name because I use(d) to dress up as a bajoran at any given occasion. Nowadays I just dress up as Snape LOL Priorities change I guess...

midway Productions Wellll Midway was because I worked on the Carnival as a "jointy" The midway is the area where most of the games are located and tend to be the main thouroughfare for traffic. Productions because my boss on the carnival made a "production out of his joints" they were usually well thought out and looked 10X better than most the joints out on the midway. I put them together and it stuck :) And no i didn't know it was the name of some game company.

It all depends on what the site is going to be used for. I like for my domain names to be indicative of what the site's purpose is. I don't recycle my domain names. If I choose to take my web in a whole new direction unrelated to it's original purpose, then I will create a new domain name to do it. The criteria I use to come up with a domain name: 1. Purpose of website; 2. Relatively short name; 3. Easy to say; 4. Easy to remember. I also don't host with companies that add their domain name as a prefix to my own.

thewizzs were a group of wizards in an AD&D game, setting up an own site was the thing to do 10 years ago, the group folded shortly after, the site was left to me because the domain was registered in my name.

hmm..some interesting ones up there
Sabra- that's what native Israelis call themselves..;)
so that's what Sam's 3d (beats Custer's Revenge, I s'pose..;)
I was kidding about Porthos, but still...no cheese!
I started here in late '01 as nu-be..until after a year, people started to complain..(it certainly wasn't for talent..;)
So I changed my name, wanted 'gadfly' (more suits my character..;) but someone got there first. Looked at a poster I had from a site called you can't do that on Star Trek (nice site..goes from fetid to funny..;), and had 'The Pakled Award for Smart People and Technical Things'..and the rest is history..;)

Acadia ( ) posted Fri, 24 February 2006 at 7:47 PM

Hmmm, I thought "site" meant website name. If we're talking board user name, then that's totally different :) I give a great deal of thought to creating a board user name. I like "normal" names, but I also like them to be "uncommon" at the same time. "Acadia" (no "R") comes from a snippet of Canadian history, but it also sounds like a girl's name. Many people want to put an "R" in it though. I used to correct them, but now I see it's probably because of a TV Show called "Joan of Arcadia" but my user name precedes that TV Show.

My name is one that I have used for over a decade. When choosing a screen name for AOL, I came up with this one: Dark(because I shun the light like a vampire), Angel (because I like angels), Genesis (because a new begining is but a form of change, life is all about change, and it just sounded cool with the rest of the SN.)

JenX ( ) posted Fri, 24 February 2006 at 9:10 PM

MorriganShadow, in any incarnation of capitlizations lol is my s/n everywhere. Except yahoo, where someone snuck the name before I could get it (I mean, really, what's the likelihood of that? g) And, for my website...well...I figured, why not just use my s/n for my URL? So, I did. I've had other domains in the past few years, but, this one's stuck ;)

Mine was a no-brainer. FoToonZ are what's on there, so that's what I called it. I was very fortunate that someone didn't already own it. If it was taken I was going to maybe call it MoToonZ, since I'm from Detroit. I'm glad I didn't have to, though. :-)

I started to sing in chorus in 1981. I was not able to read music (now yes) so I was carrying to everywhere a tape recorder to record the songs and my chord parts. The director was a funny priest (now Madrid's bishop). He was putting nicknames to all the members, so when he saw me all the times with my tape recorder, he started to call me "Rafa The Man With A Cassette" and then "Rafa Cassette". When some years later I started profesionally to play theatre I found there some people from my old chorus, they still called me 'Cassette'. I toke it as artistic name deleting a 'S' for quicker signature ... and when I started in Renderosity and I needed to select a nickname ... the rest is pure history :P

I'm definitely known for my art. Most of it is usually funny cartoons, you know, fun and feel-good stuff (produced under my own name). Mayhem has always been my artist name. If I produce art as mayhem- it's looking to be dark and twisted.
