Subject: poser imports

Okay so I got Carrara 5 and decided to test out its poser feature. Trouble is, I can get a Poser model into Carrara 5 just fine, but isn't doesn't seem to want to move at all once its in there. It might be a glitch, because I would have thought I could manipulate it directly with the movement controls on the left side of the screen, but I figured I'd better ask... course if its supposed to work... why doesn't it? Or is it supposed to work that way? Anyone know of any tutorials for how to get Poser and Carrara 5 to work right?

if you import thru "Native" you will get morphs. However, at the moment there are downsides to "Native," strand hair not compatible for one. if you import thru "Transposer" you will get NO morphs. Objects can be moved around, but not deformed by morphs. ::::: Opera :::::

So in other words, they can't be moved at all without transposer? Why make the advancment in the first place then... but any way, my problem is, in the old carrara, the PNG colors would not be preserved, they are now, but now I can't move the model... 5 looks like it has its upsides regardless if it really does nothing to solve the problem I got it for, but in any case I still want to know how to keep PNG designs intact and have the object moveable (at least as an OBJ if nothing a fully poseable model).

now i am confused....i have a new project where i plan on using carrara (4 or 5-have to decide) and poser (I have ver 5) I know very little about poser but my needs are very limited I expect to have a guy walking, looking, head and hand movement, very simple (with clothes)....so whats my best combo? carrara 4/poser 5 carrara 5/poser 6?

Hi BP, If you want to move the bone structure, you need to use the Native importer. The Native importer brings in NO animation data from Poser. Transposer brings in the figure WITH Poser animation but there is NO bone manipulation allowed. From your post, I can't tell if you are trying to simply move around a complete Poser character imported with Transposer or if you are trying to move the joints/bones after importing with the Native importer. Can you please clarify? Just want to make sure we're giving good advice. ;)

excuse me for butting in... Mark..but for simple animation....i'm going to need both: bring in animation from poser (walking for instance) as well as simple animation within carrara....holding a palm pilot and reading it... can the combo of poser5/carrrara 4 do that?...or am i go to carrara 5/poser6

I don't actually have transposer. I have Carrara 5 with poser native import. Lets see, how about an example? I created a red dragon in Poser and saved it in a certain pose. Here's a picture, (I superimposed the settings it was imported with into the picture) http://community.webshots.com/photo/148732630/2293748730056192595ucRtvf Pluses: It keeps the pose actually, the render is flawless (okay, MY render skills need some work perhaps, but that's not because of a glitch) and it at least looks like everything is "set up and ready to go". Two problems: Dang does it ever take a long time to do anything when this is running. When this guy is just an obj the time for doing things with him (other than reposing, which he'd have to be reboned for and everything) is more than halfed. I just figured out how to get his PNG colors to work correctly as an OBJ. (Just as I suspected, the upgrade wasn't needed, oh well). Second, he can be rendered and I can do anything else with him, except move him... at all! The only thing that doesn't refuse to move are those dumb green boxes (no idea what those are anyway). He's pretty useless if he can't be moved so I might as well only use OBJ. But I suspect that's not what is supposed to be happening.

Hi BP, The green boxes are the IK targets that you can use to pose the character faster. By the way, you are opening with the Native importer. The above image shows you the dialog box where you can change between Transposer and Native - it is the first box that opens upon importing a Poser file. Check out the link to get a better idea of how the Carrara bone rig works. Hi Spinner, If you have C4 with Transposer you can keep working with what you've got. However, you'll need to do all the animation/Poser movement within Poser itself. Only C5Pro will let you do a native import that gives you Bones to work with. Mark

"The Native importer brings in NO animation data from Poser." Hmm. I've been using Native importer and it's bringing in animation I created in Poser. I just did a test: Created a walk cycle in Poser 6. Imported it to C5Pro. Moved a couple limbs within C5Pro (just for the heck of it) and rendered. Everything worked fine. Maybe a version issue, or did I misunderstand?

MarkBremmer ( ) posted Wed, 08 March 2006 at 5:05 PM

No, you didn't misunderstand - I'm a knucklehead. While I was typing that, I was thinking "dynamic cloth". A mind is a terrible thing to waste....

Mark: I already said, I do not have Transposer. Hence I don't even have that menu pop up when I pull in a poser model. Man that thing is a memory hog! And an hourglass on the mouse would sure be nice! I guess my real first problem is finding a way for my computer to be able to handle this. Any one got suggestions?

Need to see this tut also.BP depends on your pc, but I don't think anyone can really give you tips for tweaking w/o specifics about what is in the file and your pc.I don't work w/ poser, but you my want to think about breaking down the componenents and bringing it in individually rather than all at once. I haven't had issues bringing, v3 in and conforming hair, clothing then applying. Also, brought in animation and poses. The scrubber can be slow, turn your preview settings down and pay attention to your render options makes a huge difference.

No need to think outside the box....
