Subject: poser/carrara.....just to confirm

as far as i understand....my present situation of carrara 4/poser5 isnt adequete for bringing in poser models and animating them within carrara. (I can animated in poser and bring in the animation "as is" with my present setup If i have transposer for carrara 4...then i will be able to import a poser model and move their "parts" from within carrara...... or i can upgrade to carrara 5/poser 6 combo and import and animate poser models from within carrara... is that a good summary?

Carrara 5 has a new, Native import option. That new option is what let's you manipulate Poser characters inside of Carrara. You will need to upgrade to Carrara5 Pro if you want actually pose inside Carrara.

Upgrading to Poser 6 is not needed -- the Native importer in Carrrara5 Pro works on the bare cr2's et al. Transposer2, as bundled with Carrara5, links fine with Poser5; your other option is to keep both running and as you tweak an animation in Poser, the results are reflected in Carrara.

The importer is not perfect however. Some props will come in displaced, and some items will coform, but incorrectly so. Most content will come in fine, but it is still hit or miss on odd somewhat unpredictable details. My last two gallery items needed about half the Poser content to be exported from Poser as obj files rather than allowing normal import. In the last image, the sword moved location, and the fox had one leg tear off. In the image before that, the left sleeve of the front figure did not bend at the elbow, even though the bones where there and it was conformed... Further two of the other figures lost hair or legs, and one of them distorted if moved at all within Carrara. Without transposer, you will also lose magnets... so you will have to spawn morph targets for all magnets in Poser and then set them to 1 before importing into Carrara - because within Carrara there is nothing to adjust the morph dials. That's an issue for me as some of my figures have dozens to almost a hundred magnets due to some of the shaping plugins I use in Poser...

I've only got standard, probably a source of a lot of my problems with being unable to move models. In that case... I'm tired of figthing the program, I'm just going to use OBJ files until some serious improvements are made to speed and ability on poser native.

I thought native import was on standard too, just not transposer. Native means you can access the dials and conforming items. You can also pose. I have pro, but I am pretty sure about that.Go check the site or ask eovia. That said if poser is a focus then having transposer seems very wise.You have to learn to rotate the joints on the characters they have constraints.I am not sure what movement problems you had BP, but it may just be a misunderstanding of usage.You can even import poses and apply them a character in native mode.

To follow up on waynes post, if you bring in natively, you can adjust morphs, if you are finding swords and other props getting "misplaced" on import you can do two things, use transposer and they won't get displaced OR do not conform them in poser, just place the shoes on the feet or the sword in the hand and save as is and they won't shift or move about. For stills this is fine, if you want to pose them you do have a conform in native carrara import although I havn't tested it yet. I stick to transposer mostly and do all the rest in pozer.

as this will be my first foray into the poser/carrara world (have worked with carrara over the years on both complex and simple models-poser just as a stand alone using either the standard poses or standard movments)

what do you recommend: i need dressed people sitting, reading, standing and walking all holding phones or palmpilots reading them (or having a cup of coffee)

nothing complex- i wont be working with morphs or magnets etc my emphises is on the quality of the models and what are they are doing as opposed to complex movements of the poser models- i will keep them simple.

if i have to upgrade so be it....the work is far more important in terms of efficiency (i have a very limited time and dont want to deal with the ideosyncracies of the programs)

What do you have now? I have poser 5 and Carrara 5 so I use transposer and just keep poser 5 open to modify or tweak the puppets and then just update "live" to Carrara, this is a fast and simple workflow in most cases.

i've got carrara 4 pro and poser 5... my animation needs are limited and time is extremely limited i'd rather spend my time on good camera movements and lighting as opposed to debugging arms that "dislocate" you sound satisfied...whats with clothes?..any problems?

Well, for simple short animations, poser 5 and carrara 5 are pretty easy to go with. Can do the animating in Poser 5 and then just render it in C5 standard or pro, I think thet're both the same as far as poser is concerned, but if you have C4 already, i'd upgrade to C5Pro, (Just me) cause it really is a lot richer overall for the upgrade price. Transposer works just fine with clothes and props and dynamic hair etc... No apparent disassociations that I have seen , but all your animating needs to be done in poser and then exported to C5P, native importer can alter the placement of shoes etc if you conform them in poser and import to carrara, but you can repose in Carrara and control orphs etc. I still use transposer more because it's easier for me. If you're not worried about 169 bucks go with c5 pro...better upgrade, more capability overall.

OK, I knew I read the morphs show up in poser, BUT mine do not,any special settings in poser itself?? I did this exactly.... If you import Poser scene files into Carrara using the "Native" option you can adjust the morphs - via sliders. (if you checked the bring in morphs) No morphs showing
