The next droid in the astromech series: the R5 unit. Like the previous sstromechs, this model was made by John Jongsma, with extra moving parts and color variations by JHoagland. The R5 unit includes:
  • Rotating head
  • Rotating outer legs
  • Rotating outer and inner feet
  • Extending middle leg
  • Extending outer and middle foot-wheels
  • "Standing" and "moving" pose files
  • Moving upper and lower middle arms
  • Left and right opening door hatches
  • Left extending service arm
  • Right extending service arm with claw No textures are included with this package, but please feel free to make your own. This is a completely stand-alone model: you don't need any previous astromechs to use this droid. To see a LOT more renders of the original Lightwave model, please see John Jongsma's site at: http://www.glimpses-essential.com/starwars_remake/SW_Droids.htm The R6 unit should be done by Wednesday or Thursday and the R7 should be done by the weekend. Note: this is the correct R5 Astromech Droid- the astromech droid with a bad motivator (which the Jawas tried to sell to Luke in Star Wars) is actually an R5 unit. R2 units have a round, metallic head while R5 units have the square-ish head and three front eyes.

These are my favorites. :) There never have been R1 units, have there?

Can never have too many astromechs. Thank you. :D

There never have been R1 units, have there? But of course. The larger robot sold by the Jawas is an R1 unit. In real-life, a Google image search brings up some good results, including pictures of an R1 action figure: http://www.rebelscum.com/sw0406r1-g4.asp http://swfigures.com/swf/Enlarged/GoldCard-R1-G4(2004).htm Don't forget the official source, Starwars.com... though their images of astromech droids are limited to screen shots from the movies. http://www.starwars.com/databank/droid/astromechdroid/ There seems to be a discrepancy in size: the Star Wars site says the height of an R2 unit is 0.96 meters, but the "Essential Guide to Droids" book says the height is 0.97 meters. Hmm... Sorry, but John Jongsma never made an R1 unit. His astromechs range from R2 to R7... and there are no R8 or R9 units. --John

So that's an R1 unit! That is so cool! Thank you. That is the best thing I have learned so far, today.
