THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Didja know that Corel Bryce 5.1 is the same as DAZ Bryce 5.5? I didn't!

Lyne ( ) posted Mon, 20 March 2006 at 9:37 PM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 6:19 AM

but now I do...and I may very well be coming home to my roots.. BRCYE!! I was prowling around DAZ...looking at the xfrog sets on sale..then saw the ON SALE - PRICE TOO GOOD TO PASS UP xfrog SAMPLERS in the Bryce section..then I started on my quest of finding out from users if the versions of Bryce were different...and could MINE use the same products as sold at DAZ? (like that too gorgeous canyon project!?!) YES!!!! and with my growing frustration over handling vue water (get the wave function out, can't find smooth reflection etc... just can't ever get it right) and the vue terrain editor (why can't I do what I did in Bryce?? like build buildings and trees, let alone the greatest terrains??, and the function editor that still defies me in vue 4 and simply drives me around the bend in vue infinite).... and now with vue patches being all hinky and content needing the patches...let alone the crashes when you load up a vue scene...I remember how steady Bryce wasa for me...of course save and resave as with any software....but...I am about to re-join the world of Bryce with a cart load of fantastic helping products from DAZ! :) I may just revel in landscapes now.. I know I can bring ANY objects from poser into Bryce...I can have trees plants....people all mapped right from the import get go...and well.... !! :)) I can use Bantam grass...and weedy plants imported...and ground cover materials from DAZ...and and...and!! pant pant Personally I kept the original DAZ Studio beta and the magic Bryce Plug in that brings stuff in so well...all safe on a CD...sooooo stay tuned! :)

Forget the Noodle and just throw em in the pool of Bryce water... And No corels5.1 is no where even close to DAZ's bryce...Daz's is way better...

???? Sorry, but in what way? Haven't seen anything that made me want to upgrade from 5.1 yet. Open-minded and willing to listen, John

i stand with tjohn on that even though i went and purchased 5.5..mind you it makes for a great storage container for other bryce things. Point out the good stuff in 5.5 Keith (Artist formally known as CrazyDawg)

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

attileus ( ) posted Tue, 21 March 2006 at 5:21 AM

My humble question is why DAZ can't make a decent upgrade adding Glob.Ill. and Ecosystems, nothing more; I don't count Character Studio in Bryce as a hardcore update :-( ; even my great grandmother could have written an update in 2 years! lol

zescanner ( ) posted Tue, 21 March 2006 at 7:32 AM

This is QUITE interesting to me. I missed the upgrade price that DAZ had from Bryce 5 to Bryce 5.5 (thinking surely Bryce 6 was soon to come!). Just now looking I see that I do only have version 5; not even 5.1. How could I get the upgrade to 5.1? And on the original topic... WHAT EXACTLY does version 5.5 have that 5.1 does not have?

attileus ( ) posted Tue, 21 March 2006 at 7:41 AM

zesca: I don't have 5.5 but as far as I know in 5.5 you can pose imported figures without using Poser.

Character Studio is a great addition to bryce just like attileus said pose imported figures without using Poser but i have yet to try importing as i don't know what file types ca be imported into Character Studio

CrazyDawg ( ) posted Tue, 21 March 2006 at 10:13 AM

you can import poser files into Daz Studio, you can also get the .exe self installing files from Daz3d.com, install them, pose them and then iport into bryce...

@zescanner Bryce 5.1 update......(link) Difference.......Bryce 5 + 5.1 doesnt crash so much...cant wait for 6...might even crash half as much as 5.5c or the same as Daz/Studio :)

"WHAT EXACTLY does version 5.5 have that 5.1 does not have?"

The DAZ Studio app linked directly to Bryce - when it works it's a much easier way to get Poser content into Bryce but it fails so much that it often negates it's value.

Multiple undos as opposed to one (or was it two?) undos in 5.0.1.

Larger preview sizes in the Terrain Editor.

Faster render speeds on the PC when using Image Textures. Sometimes as much as 20% (but this is very scene dependent, so it's actually slower then 5.0.1 in some cases).

A new .OBJ importer which doesn't crash when the path to a texture is incomplete (like Poser .obj paths.). .OBJs also load a heck of a lot faster -close to 50%.

5.5 reads .OBJ material groups. 5.0.1 only did mesh groups. Although I prefer Material Groups many don't. Wish they'd added an option to choose which to use.

5.0.1 used to scale imports to be all the same size. 5.5 now uses the actually dimensions specified in the imported file (well sort of ;-) ). Of course if you use real world dimensions in your modeler for say a building it comes into Bryce extremely large but multiple imports come in with the correct relative size.

Lots of 5.0.1 bug fixes, especially the Light Gel setting getting stuck "on" and Sun Soft Shadow setting that wasn't saved with the file. And the PC Task Bar problem.

A whole bunch of new Bryce content.

5.5 runs under Mac OS 10.4.X. With 5.0.1 none of the file selectors (like Open and Save) worked.

Having said that, 5.5 introduced a whole new set of bugs which in some cases makes 5.5 unusable (like clobbered image textures on the PC or the failure to reload large saved scenes on the Mac).

I mostly use 5.0.1 unless I'm using Poser stuff or very large .OBJ imports. Then I use 5.5, save the file and load that into 5.0.1.

While that's not a heck of a lot (that's why it's a "dot" update), the DAZ programmers did a pretty good job with a code base that, in some cases, is 12 years old, poorly documented, patched to hell and back again and which had none of the original Bryce team to give them insight into Bryce's "intricacies". I'd hoped that DAZ would do what Corel did and bring on some of the original Bryce team as consultants - I think things would have gone a lot quicker/better!

Best;
Dan

"A new .OBJ importer which doesn't crash when the path to a texture is incomplete (like Poser .obj paths.)." Well, I have the 5.01 updated version, and these particular bugs were fixed by that update. At least, I don't have these problems with my version of Bryce. Haven't missed having the Daz Studio connection either, but I do have DS. I've played around with it some, but I have a lot of experience with my Poser4, so I'm sticking with that for now. When Bryce undergoes a REAL major upgrade, you can be sure I'll be getting it. I just don't think that 5.5 is the upgrade I'm waiting for. John

Yes perhaps MAC version is steadier...but I am PC...I do not need content..having huge amounts...and my ORIGINAL DS studio plus the DAZ bryce import plug in that reads the DS files from my Poser works with perfection... my 5.1 is virtually the same FOR MY NEEDS... Heck, did not mean to start a contraversy...but if you have 5.1 and simply want to buy the CONTENT at DAZ for Bryce, it WILL WORK in your Bryce, that is all... I did RESEARCH with folks who own both...and talked directly to Darlisa at DAZ who posted the "high bandwidth" term on the DAZ Bryce pages...she, A LONG TIME BRYCER says there is NO difference, at least at this point and that the term high bandwidth simlpy means if you have DSL you can download the HUGE full Bryce... (she is PC too) All in all, I know I will be happy splashing around in the Bryce water, playing on the great terrains (bought and self generated) and using the xfrog plants in there! What I use DS importer thingy for is for dressed PEOPLE with complex trans maps...all of which are nicly in place with the import plug in, unlike before when they would get all wonky in import... Well... anyway... happy Bryce-ing folks...and breath the nice CALMING Bryce air and have fun with whatever version you have! :) Just know no matter what version you CAN BUY THE ON SALE GREAT BRYCE PRODUCT CONTENT STUFF AT DAZ FOR SUPER PRICES NOW AT DAZ! (not affiliated with DAZ, have no adjenda at saying that! :))

I don't know TJ - just tried this with Corel 5.0.1.0 PC:

Selected a Sky preset, turned on Soft Shadows in Sky Lab, saved and reloaded. The Sky loads back in with SS off.

Turn on Light Gel and save. Reload and turn Gel off and save. Reload and Gel is still turned on.

And the path issue is Mac only - I should have caught that.

Just wanted to be sure we were talking about the same thing :-)

Light Bug was fixed,Before when you saved multiple lights in a scene and came back to the scene you would have to go to each and every light and click OFF the gel light setting...In 5.5c its fixed

It is nice in 5.5 to have more than just the wireframe, but it is irritating to have the dreaded black silhouette memory problems with the textures. Of course the textures are kept in a better order I think that in 5.1 as well.

DAZ also has the Bryce 5.01 update available on their site under Downloads. And Lyne is correct that any Bryce 5.5 content can be used in Bryce 5.01 as well. The changes made to 5.5 did not affect the way materials, objects, skies, and scenes are saved compared to 5.01. -darlisa
