This is going to kick up a long thread, but we should consolidate our Forum wishes here for when that fateful day comes that they will go PHP. So lets hear those wishes. And/or, give me links to sites that have examples of what you want/like. *Let me go ahead and get this one out of the way - Yes...we know you all want avatars, lol. AgentSmith

EASILY created & manipulated webpages, html on steroids. Definition: The PHP Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP -- yes, the first "P" in the acronym does indeed stand for PHP!) allows web developers to create dynamic content that interacts with databases. PHP applications are normally found on Linux servers and in conjunction with MySQL databases. It provides those servers with functionality similar to that provided to the Windows platform by Active Server Pages technology.

I'd like to see newest posts at the top of the list with an icon that shows if it's been read or not (a'la DAZ forums). Avatars are cool as long as they're limited in size. I'd also like having text tags buttons for things like bold or Italics (quotes would be nice too...) Best; Dan

Flak ( ) posted Fri, 31 March 2006 at 7:15 AM

Sticky threads are good... as long as there aren't like 10 of them.....thinking of some of a few php 3d forums that seem to breed stickies that hang around for months past their use by date. Avitars - not bad, as long as there's a size limit. I've noticed at DAZ that at one stage people felt the need to make 100kb avitars and I think thats a bit over the top (especially to anyone on slowband connections). Hopefully the php will have a useful forum search as well. (I don't mind the one we seem to have at the moment, but the daz one is damn near impossible to find anything with)

I'm glad they're updating, but I hope they don't change 'every' aspect of the way the forum works.
(If it's not broken, don't fix it.)

Stickies and avatars would be great, and I'm assuming that threads will 'come to front' whenever they're posted to - after this update.

One thing I would NEVER change though, is the sequential layout of the thread pages. Renderosity is the only forum I use where I can see 'at a glance' everyone who's posted in a thread - before I decide to enter it. I suppose on the surface that's not really important. But I really kinda like it like that, and I think R'osity just wouldn't feel the same without it.

It's one of those things where you wouldn't really miss it, unless of course, it was suddenly taken away from you.

In addition to my previous post I would like to add:

I think it's equally important to have a thread which asks the question:
"What Would You Like To Stay After The Update?"

On site the size of R'osity, with a huge membership, I think it would be rather careless not to do so, or you just might remove the stuff that makes R'osity...

I dislike the change to the archive, used to be it pulled up all the old threads, now you have to put in a year and a month.

I dislike the "mark all read" I'd like to mark each thread individually as "read" cause sometimes I want to clean up a bit but don't have time to read all the threads in one sitting.

ICM -"Drop down from your User name for Gallery/HP/URL/etc" -You lost me, what does that mean? Pumeco; -Yup, the various "opinion" threads on the new PHP forums will be un-ending for a while, lol. What is great is we can actually implement the changes quickly. -I do not know for sure about the "sequential layout of the thread pages". The new forums are up (for me) to look at, but there are no posts in them yet. Again, I REALLY do not know what it will look like finally, and we might have an option for that layout thing. I'll find out about that about the same time as everybody else, lol. (when it opens). Ang25; -Bryce chat will/should be back asap as when we switch over to the new server. -"I'd like to mark each thread individually as "read". -I'm not sure about that one way or another as an option. Member options will be added on after the forums are up and running, and we get a feel for them. Rayraz; -wysiwyg text editor & split long threads into pages; -I believe both those options will be available. Splitting long threads should be available from the start, with options for how many "Threads per forum page", and "Messages per thread page", you individually want. -The wysiwyg text editor has alreday been suggested by staffers to the site programmers, I don't see why it wouldn't be brought on at some point. (Hope) Notes; If they are giving us avatars, I would be apt to assume they found a way to put less demand on the servers, so...I would hope eventually they will give us full forum search abilities back. Ability to see how many views per thread - Yeah, that's basically back in there from what I can see. 150kb for an avatar? far too big, imo. It might work if members can have an option to turn them off. Even with my cable modem, 6mpbs connection, I would still turn them off! I want Fast MUCH more than Pretty. AgentSmith

I don't see why the list of replies cannot be collapsible, so you can get DAZ/CG Society look or the current Renderosity look. And every PHP forum I now has an Ignore/Favourite list. But! One hundred! And! Fifty! Kilobytes! For an avatar! Are they insane? Or it's a typo? Why not limit it to 100x100 and 10-12 kilobytes? Imagine a thread with 15 replies and a 150 kB avatar each. It's 2.25 MB of nothing really. Off to Community forum to rant. :-)

150kb avatars is absurd and the person who thought it up should be ashamed of him/herself for pushing this through as using oversized files is one of the most basic errors made in website design... 10-20 kbyte at 100-150 px sounds more like it (my personal preference would be something like 80x80@10kb or 100x100@15kb). Ray's most basic webdesign rules: rule 1: Keep it intuitive and efficient. rule 2: Keep it compact. rule 3: make it idiot proof. rule 4: Keep it reasonable. "The wysiwyg text editor has alreday been suggested by staffers to the site programmers, I don't see why it wouldn't be brought on at some point. (Hope)" Does this mean it won't be there (yet) in the initial release on monday? hmm.. slightly disappointing.

ooh, ooh, i just got an intersting question! I just read there's like 2.5 million posts being converted to fit into the php forums. This makes me wonder... How is this database working? As a coder i'd like to get some insight into that. Is it just one GIANT mysql dbase (which i assume would be rather slow)? or do u use one GIANT (and thus slower) archive dbase and a smaller more managable (thus faster) dbase for the more recent posts? Or is there another brainy way of fixing this? Input much appreciated ;-)

THE SEARCH IS WORKING!!!!!!! Yipppeeeee! (still didn't find what I was looking for though) My wish list: Don't change the look of the forums, I love the nice friendly way the thread scrolls down, and I love the nice frinedly purple/lilac colour I've chosen is there waiting for me when I log in. Okay, so to squeeze in avatars you'll need to change it a bit - but don't go mad with it!!! It would be nice if we could search threads by images. (that way I'd have found what I was looking for) And following on from that - it would be nice if someone forgot to include the image on their post about... a wip (for instance) - if they could go back and add the image to that first post - if they began the thread. I dunno if that's possible? It would also be nice if a thread that someone starts, and then deletes - would actually go away completely. So that we stop having all those irritating threads that are totally empty except for "this post was deleted by..." I'm sure I'll think of some more tomorrow, but not now.

I for one, hate forums that are flooded with avatars and signatures. But, oh well, when in Rome... "It would be nice if we could search threads by images" - Uhm...how would you go about that? I must be able to turn off avatars.

I must be able to see replies to a thread like we do now.

I must not have the ability to ignore people simply because they are idiotic mindless hootinannies, because it's the exposure to opinions vastly different than our own that keeps us from becoming even more narrow minded.

I must not have to wonder if I've read a thread before or be surprised if the last 7 replies were all by pumeco.

I must not have to scroll thru a page and a half of stickies explaing every quirk of Bryce or special announcements for something that happened a week ago.

I must not suffer from constant deja vu every time some ninny feels like quoting an entire reply then adding a smiley.

I must not be given the options to "return to forum" after I've marked all the topics as read, I just marked them all as read, I'm probably done with that forum you think? As a matter of fact, what's with that special magic page that tells me my replies been post? I really wanted to wait another 45 seconds to make sure you got that ok. Oh! look! I can return to the index OR view my post! I certainly want to review my post, I'm not sure I put enough smileys in it. Why can't I go back to the forum? I'm still reading, just because I've made a reply to one thread now I'm done with any thread having to do with Bryce? Thank you oh friendly helpful little computer machine for keeping me from exceeding my daily limit of Bryce topics.

Oh, sorry. I'll stop.
