We all had to start somewhere right? I think a lot of new artists get frustrated easily without encouragement. So by way of encouragement, I suggest we all post our very first and then our most recent render. :) Just to see how far we've all come. I've been posting here for 5 years...since 2001. This is the first render I ever posted...I leave them all in my gallery to keep me humble LOL. I'd post my first render ever but sadly, it was lost in my external HD crash last september. http://www.renderosity.com/viewed.ez?galleryid=88410 This is the render I just uploaded to the galleries not five minutes ago. http://www.renderosity.com/viewed.ez?galleryid=1191772 We've all got to start somewhere...right? :D

The link is to one of my recent images and this is my first Poser render. Been a member since 2000. Yep, that's Posette, too! At the time I didn't know how to conform hair or clothing so painted everything and added all the scenery in PSP. Definitely have come a long way so you newbies just keep practicing, it will be worth every minute! Good thread, SkyeWolf!

You know, I was thinking that it might be fun to try and recreate this image, In the Lair, with what experience I have gained. Hmmmm ... This used to be in my gallery but I tend to clean house now and then and start fresh.

I went searching through my old CD's just for this thread. I am a Poser old-timer .... this is the earliest render I could find, as I don't have any backups earlier than 1997. The link is a render from March 1997, probably Poser 2 ... Bottom image is my most recent done in Poser 6. I've come a long way, and I couldn't have done it without the help and encouragement of wonderful people here at R'osity! :) This is a great thread! My 1st render (well screne shot) was of about 4 dorks with primitives for guns and in a shoot out, using the demo of poser 4. No longer have it though :( My most recent render is this. (note it is an image of Christ on a cross made last easter so it is graphic)

My first Poser render was rather horrible. I wanted to test as many things as possible, so I've tried setting the transparency on the dress, conforming both the hair and the dress, changing texture on Posette, posing her and importing background pic. Not bad for second launch :) (first one was to take a look at controls). It was around October 2004. First Poser upload to the gallery was Valentine Day card with nekkid Posette breasts (Valentine Day 2005). http://www.renderosity.com/viewed.ez?galleryid=1191691&Start=1&Artist=vilian&ByArtist=Yes This is my latest upload, by coincidence it's also not-quite-dressed lady - I rarely make human renders, being muchly into toon animals and creatures. http://www.renderosity.com/viewed.ez?galleryid=1188951&Start=1&Artist=vilian&ByArtist=Yes And this is previous last upload - much more in spirit of what I'm usually rendering :)

I started my Poser adventure last year, in June. My first render is above, dated June 15, a Jessi with some growing dynamic hair on her face(!!!). I don't even remember how i did that but i didn't post it. Then my first image was posted on my fiance's Gallery here at R'osity:

http://www.renderosity.com/viewed.ez?galleryid=986375

Then after a period where i got a bit unmotivated, i gained some courage and started my own gallery here, and here's my latest image (which i'm really proud of):

Great thread! Let's see... My second image can be found [here](http://www.renderosity.com/viewed.ez?galleryid=100582). I'd been avoiding Poser because I thought it looked plastic, and it wasn't until I saw some of Will Kramer's stuff that I said "I'd actually like to try that". So I got the program, a subscription for the site that Catharina Harders was running back then, and ordered Angelyna Wings and Sydd's CD. I'm sadly missing the first render, although a remake of it can be seen here, with different clothing, wings and background. And I *still* love that V2 character. My problem back then was that I was taking literally MONTHS to finish a piece.

My last "proper" render (as in, planned piece, not something that came out while testing a texture set or the like) is in the link above. I do like both versions of Ensnare :)

Strangely enough, unlike most people, I went from painting the hair on to using 3D hair, mainly because as the realism of the skin improves, along with detailing of clothing and their textures, my brain just screams there's something WRONG if painted hair is added.

I almost don't count the Frankenstein image as being my first Poser image because I wasn't happy with it and it took a year or so more of noodling with Poser before giving it another shot. The zombie image finally convinced me that Poser was worth exploring more. As far as how much I've improved, it's hard to say. I've gotten a bit more adept and got ambitious enough to add eight figures to a scene (10 if you want to count two LoveyBears) in a recent render and got to see Poser grind to a near halt (and actually couldn't complete a render without deleting a couple figures first and bringing them in for a second render pass). I haven't really used Poser often enough to grow as much as I should in my Poser art. I really need to just force myself to push new techniques in Poser and start learning more tricks and apply them to new efforts.

gagnonrich ( ) posted Tue, 04 April 2006 at 12:37 PM

When I look at the differences between first and last images, it almost seems as if most of the artists improved firstly as artists and then as Poser artists. The main problems I see in a number of the early images has to do with bad poses and uninteresting layouts. The new images don't have those flaws. When I look at the examples Jenay (who I hope doesn't mind being used as an example) provided, above, the first image has a very boring perspective--a straight on ground level view. Both P4 female figures are expressionless and the one on the left has an awkward unrealistic pose. Jenay's new image has some angle on the camera, providing a more ineteresting look at the scene. The pose is very natural and there's the feeling that the character's body is aware of gravity. There's a hint of a smile on the character's face. Artistically, the new image is much better composed and the improvements are much more of an artistic nature than a greater technical proficiency with Poser. There are also some technical improvements in the new image. Apply those technical improvements to the first image and it will still be a lackluster image with more technical gloss. It goes to show that Poser can make a good render, but not necessarily make a good artist. The nice thing is that the more work an artist creates, the better they become as artists.

These are my first and last Poser renders. The first pic I produced within about 20 minutes of taking Poser out of it's box. I was chuffed to bits with it and made a point of showing it to anyone who showed a casual interest.. bless lol

My most recent is a portrait ( my favourite type of Poser render ) of my V3 character "Liberty". As I spend most of my time working with Poser I get very little "play" time. Shame really.

Things seem to have gotten a little messed up in the transition and mine got lost, so I've attached it again. I looked up when the Frankenstein image was done and it was 2001 while the zombie image was done in 2003. That gives an idea of how unsatisfied I was with using Poser in 2001. One funny note about the Frankenstein image is that, when I imported Mike into Bryce, it included his genitals (I forgot to go through the hierarchy to turn it off), so Frankie was stomping about in a very embarrassing fashion until I painted them out of the render.
