you had to reformat to get your router back? Something's not right there..you shouldn't have to do that. That's what those irritating phone people at tech support are supposed to be helping you with..;) I guess it depends on what 'not recognize' the router means. If it's connected directly, it could be cable problems, or something like that. Hope everything works out.

For email and internet and surfing Rendo, I've just replaced my 1.2 GHz PC with an older iMac G3 (450 MHz). I also edit with Final Cut 2, and Photoshop 5 on the iMac which runs OS 9 and has Nortons. My superpowered PC (loaded to the gunwhales with Internet Security Software because it's so easy to virus these things up), got slower and slower. When I took it in for fixing, the tech said that the security software was slowing it up and that if I took it off, things would run smoother. So, open the machine up for viruses which techs will gleefully charge me to remove, or switch to a platform that works. No brainer!
lose norton ASAP, 1358. it was a problem for OS 9 users, and since nobody has seen any OS 9 spyware nor r.a.t.s for 6 or 7 years now, and since script kiddies only do port scans for open ME and XP machines, you don't need it. if you've got a router with an hardware firewall, that's more than enuff IMVHO.
I've had a trick a time or two getting my machine to recognize an outside device (such as a router). But I've never had to re-format my entire master drive & re-install all of my programs to do this. Odd. I agree with pakled on this -- the first thing I'd check would be my cables & connections.
Hi all, this pigging router is a bit temperamental anyway (during the process it was either not showing my DSL or the USB connection. I got onto tech persons - don't forget these are paid for calls - carried out their instructions. Zilch. As my PC needed a kick up the jacksie I decided to reformat - hey - everything worked OK, so it was worth it.

By the way. Its normal for your router to fail now an then(logjam). All thats usually required is for you to hold the reset button for several seconds and your good. Also your PC isnt supposed to recognize your router(and it won't). Well okay it'll recognize the IP but thats not your router tyhats all setup on your PC first.. But it does need to recognize your NIC(ethernet card). Reinstalling drivers for the NIC should have resolved that. But hey, now yu can start again with a brand new fresh drive.

He should be great even with just a plain routeras it by itself essentially is a firewall) . But most pros recommend a hardware router/firewall AND a software firewall. The best being Zone Alarm Pro. Mainly because A hardware/firewall router only keeps things from coming in. But it cant stop a program from wanting to call home. Where as Zone Alarm can do exactly that. as well as be a backup for blocking incoming requests
Yeah Macs get hit by viruses all be it rare.

had to unplug and move all my PC stuff yesterday for putting in a new surge plug unit. Got everything joined together and sorted (hah). PC wouldn't recognise my broadband router. did uninstall and reinstall all afternoon - no go, so had to bite the bullet and reformat. Just in process of reinstalling my proggies and backup files grrrrrr. Fun fun fun - haven't got poser back on yet so will get on with it - boys o boys
