Subject: See you when the forum bugs are ironed out.

Acadia ( ) posted Wed, 05 April 2006 at 12:08 AM · edited Thu, 16 January 2025 at 1:52 AM

I'm logging from here for a few days until some of the features get ironed out. I find I'm becoming very aggravated with some changes that are seemingly "broken" and it's making maneuvering and reading these forums extremely difficult at the moment. The search is the worse that it's ever been. You can't search by user name. Searching key words pulls up thousands of threads sorted by "relevance", and sometimes doesn't even pull up the thread you are looking for. The post bumping that was supposed to be implemented isn't working. Not all new posts are being flagged as new. I'll check back periodically but I won't be posting here much if at all until things get fixed.

Actually...I just got a notification of a new post and I don't like it :( The old ones used to tell you what the post was about and you could decide whether or not you viewed it....now you have to view it otherwise you won't know :(

Seems to be working for me here too. Haven't popped into the forums in a few days and was surprised by the changes.

I must admit that the new forums looks kinda wierd, but sometimes the changes are good, I would like to have an option to change the Forum's colors :)like let us to change it black background with white font?

I'll reserve judgement until the whole thing is worn in properly. I prefer this kind of forum; I just don't dig the current style of this one. Hopefully the option to change the look will be implemented eventually.

I like the new format. The color scheme is fine with me too. The only problem I seem to be having is that the thread icons aren't changing. Even after I post and leave a thread, the main forum page still has the yellow star saying there are new posts in the thread. Otherwise, it's fine, a bit sluggish, but fine.

rockets ( ) posted Wed, 05 April 2006 at 5:39 AM

I'm not crazy about the bright white, but they'll probably give an option to change it as soon as the important stuff is worked out. :b_uncertain:

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Wed, 05 April 2006 at 5:58 AM

All in all it seems to be working, but - read threads are still displaying a yellow star - theads aren't bumped to the top when replied to The second one.. Well, honestly I've always liked Rosity's chronological type of forum, but if the threads aren't marked as read it's a nightmare to figure out which ones you've read and which ones you haven't... So that one should be top priority for the fixers G I'm not sure I like the big smilies. Or rather, they're cute and all but they take up a lot of space... :m_think:

My biggest complaint is that unread threads aren't filtered to the "top" of the page! In the old forums you could set it so only unread thread were visable. now you see a full "page" of read and unread threads and have to scroll around to find the yellow stars. I'd rather have an option to filter out read threads altogether. mike

Khai ( ) posted Wed, 05 April 2006 at 7:06 AM

"- read threads are still displaying a yellow star" atm you've got to mark them read by hitting "[mark all topics read]"

vilian ( ) posted Wed, 05 April 2006 at 7:16 AM · edited Wed, 05 April 2006 at 7:18 AM

Yellow stars are ugly as hell but at least visible. Now if only threads were labelled as read after reading... And I hoped for "bumping" freshly replied threads too. The thing I don't like now at all is that there's no connection between "new" (forums, MP) and "old" (galleries, freestuff, home pages, IM). Hard to see who is who this way. Last thing I found lacking is little button linking to last post in the thread/forum. It says who posted last message, but there's no link to actually check the message. I guess we just have to wait and see if anything gets repaired :glare: Edit: Yep, emots are kinda cool, but the big ones are... weird... :b_sweat:

All in all, PHPBB is a huge improvement over Bondware's forum. But the implementation (or imitation, who knows?) has some major problems. I lose the dropdown lists on the right half the time, and they are my primary navigation tool. And having to choose whether to be notified of replies repeatedly is going to cut my forum time radically. I depend on ebots to know whether to revisit a thread, and I depend on knowing WHO replied; sounds like that's all a thing of the past. It seems much slower, but that's partially because I keep stumbling around trying to figure out how to get anywhere. I'm with Acadia; time for a break until R'osity is through using its CUSTOMERS (market.renderosity.com) as beta-testers. The color scheme is PHPBB plain vanilla, BTW; you'd think they would have taken the time to brand it. Oh well, I had other things to catch up on. M

originalkitten ( ) posted Wed, 05 April 2006 at 7:41 AM

I feel kinda like a moaner...but about the ebots letting us know....not only do we not get told on new posts whats it about.....when someone replies to a thread instead of getting 1 letting u know and u go to that thread and catch up...you get a ebot for every blinkin reply.....

Argh. You also have to check "It's HTML, dimmy; don't reformat it!!" every time. Wonderful. The evolution of software: functionality and usability are ignored, but we won't mind because we got some great big glittery emoticons. Oooooh, priiiiiiity!!!! And I see we've added a "Language" check. I always use HTML and language, so I guess I better check it too.... Sheesh. M PS: The HTML functionality hasn't changed, apparently. If you check HTML, you must put in line break tags between paragraphs. If you don't check it, your character formatting comes through correctly regardless.

Uh why? I haven't checked it at all and my formatting is like I want it. That bit is just like the old .ez forum. But on top we've got new pwetty smilies :b_funny: One thing I miss is athe ability to actually see the thread while replying to it. That is standard in every other forum and it's a nice way of making sre you're quoting/adressing the right person... But... lessee... This is still a newborn baby. Babies must have some time to grow up I spose :)

It'll take some getting used to, but I think they'll iron things out as we go along. Hang in there.

I discovered when I previewed that the HTML switch still works like it used to. Hence the PS. And in fairness, I just got my first ebot, and it's a big improvement on the old, which was already my favorite. I can see who replied, to what, and I have three link options. Fine. Now give us a profile switch that saves us having to remember to check notify every time we post. Uhp, wait! It looks like if you check it, the check is sticky! All is forgiven. Well, Ok, not all. RE: Babies. Sure they need to grow up. But we don't usually set them loose to get jobs and careers while they are still filling diapers. Hm. Is that "language"? I mean, it's meta-poop sort of.... Francemi ( ) posted Wed, 05 April 2006 at 8:59 AM

I guess it will be fine once the little problems are solved but there is one thing I really don't like. And maybe it is only because I haven't found the correct option to fix it: I can't set things to send me a notification email on REPLIES. Either I receive a notification email every time someone post a message in the forum or I don't receive notification at all. It seems I have to check the "notify me on replies" each time I post a message or else my inbox will be overload in no time at all.

Is there a thread anywhere updating new developments as they work out the kinks, like there was when the Marketplace changeover took place?

If you enjoy pain, then yes. I just looked over there, and it is spammed full of threads. Pre-upgrade, this is where I found my information. I'm sure there is useful info buried in there, but I don't much feel like wading through the muck to find it. Good Luck! :m_wink:

Navigation is an issue as well. Unless I'm missing it, once in a thread there really should be a link back to the forum (the specific forum you were in not the general "forums" link) and it should refresh automatically. Edited to add: "Top of Forum" takes you back into the specific forum I found. Should be more clear though.

Acadia ( ) posted Thu, 06 April 2006 at 6:30 PM

They finally have a sort by last post option, so that makes navigation a whole lot easier. Next I hope they fix the search feature and get rid of the "sorted by relevence" which makes no sense to me. If they can't fix it, I'd even be happy if they went back to the 1/2 turned off way it was before the change over. At least you could still find things.
